Am I going to regret buying a cot that....

doesn't have a drop down side? Dh and I have seen a lovely big cot in John Lewis but it doesn't have drop down sides (ie it's solid all round so you have to lean in) - am I going to be cursing it in a few months when I drop the level down as dd starts pulling herself up/standing?

no - we have a drop-side but I hardly use it. You have to lean over to pick them up anyway, doesn't make any difference to me whether the side is up or down.

LIZS · 21/06/2006 17:30

tbh after the first few weeks, when we left it down, we rarely used it. Once they can pull up you don't have to reach that low anyway !

PanicPants · 21/06/2006 17:30

My cot doesn't have drop down sides, and I can't say I've noticed any ill effects because of it. I've never once thought 'I wish I'd bought a cot with a drop down side'

tortoise · 21/06/2006 17:32

Ive had drop side for all 4 of mine and never used it!

Munchkinola · 21/06/2006 17:32

I never regretted not having drop down sides and mine came from John Lewis. DD is now two and half and still sleeps in it as a cot bed. It still looks immaculate

cece · 21/06/2006 17:33

we never used our drop down facility so should be OK

MrsFogi · 21/06/2006 17:34

Mn comes up trumps as usual - thank you for the rapid responses, I feel an internet purchase coming along soon . I'm sure my mother will think I need drop down sides though

Mothers always think the opposite...... It's an unwritten rule

mousiemousie · 21/06/2006 17:37

Never used the drop on my cot!

WigWamBam · 21/06/2006 17:44

We had a drop-down side but I found it such a faff to use that I didn't bother. It was never a problem.

spacecadet · 21/06/2006 17:46

no, i have never used the drop down facility, im guessing that your cot has 2 base settings, one is higher for younger babies, you dont need the drop down when its set at that height

LeahE · 21/06/2006 17:59

How tall are you? I'm 5'6" and valued having the drop side a lot when DS was little (but then our mattress height wasn't very adjustable), but if I were an inch or so taller I wouldn't have needed it. If you are taller than me or your mattress height will adjust to a good range then no, I don't think you need it. We never dropped the side once DS was pulling up.

tassis · 21/06/2006 18:04

I'm 6 foot and never dropped the sides of the cot. Can't think why, maybe the catch was dodgy...

southeastastra · 21/06/2006 18:05

never used the drop part of the cot either! it was a pain to get back into position!

DelGirl · 21/06/2006 18:16

Only really use the drop side when I'm changing the sheets. Depends on your back I suppose. Mine isn't fantastic, that's why I bought a drop side but hardly use it now dd stands.

NotAnOtter · 21/06/2006 18:20

no - mine had drop sides for first three babies - fourth NO drop - has not crossed my mind and he is still in it aged 3!

BagelBird · 21/06/2006 18:26

Mine had a drop down side but broke the lifting bit with DD1 and had it repaired in a way that it was fixed permanently. With DD2 didn?t miss the drop down bit at all even though I had used it with DD1.
As for your mum - they always know best don?t they ? just smile sweetly and count to ten... x

peanutbutter · 21/06/2006 18:27

are you short? i'm short and i'm so glad i've got a drop side on ds's cot. otherwise i'd have to lower him down and then literally drop him the last bit.

trinityrhino · 21/06/2006 18:29

I didn't really ever use the drop-side on the cot we had.

NomDePlume · 21/06/2006 18:35

I insisted on a drop side cot and NEVER once used it.

Melpomene · 21/06/2006 18:45

I find the dropside very useful when dd2 is already asleep in my arms and I'm gently lowering her into the cot. But if you're putting them into the cot awake then it doesn't matter so much.

spangles · 21/06/2006 18:50

agree with nomdeplume.. insisted on cot bed with drop side but never used it.

Enid · 21/06/2006 18:51

never regretted not having drop down sides

really regretted not getting the cot bed version though

Enid · 21/06/2006 18:51

ooh mine came from JL too

has done for three kids and still looks luverly

compo · 21/06/2006 18:52

no, we've never used our dropside either
