car feels like it pulls slightly

southeastastra · 26/01/2012 20:45

hard to explain but it feels like a glitch in the power and sort of pulls, not badly but enough to notice. it's ok when foot on accelorator

1999 ford focus, hoping it won't get worse for a while, any thoughts to what it can be? have tried googling

Have you checked your tyre pressures?

Does it pull when braking? If so, definitely check your tyres and brake pads.

hellhasnofury · 26/01/2012 20:49

Have you had the tracking checked? Most tyre places should be able to do it for you.

southeastastra · 26/01/2012 20:51

i got the tracking done about 7 months ago was ok though it does wobbly a bit at speed again - it pulls without me putting foot on brake but i do think my brakes need looking at

OP posts:
hellhasnofury · 26/01/2012 20:52

If it wobbles at speed does it get to a point where the wobble stops again?

southeastastra · 26/01/2012 20:55

well it stops when i slow down!

it happens even at low speed though, like its going to stall but doesn't. also recently had fuel pump replaced so couldn't be that..

The wobble could be a buckled wheel. Has the power steering fluid been checked lately?

Pounamu · 26/01/2012 21:03

When you say pulling I assume you mean to the left/right? It could just need a wheel alignment maybe? That would explain both the pulling and the 'speed wobbles'. If it's been out of alignment for a while the tyres could have worn unevenly, which will cause the same to happen

southeastastra · 26/01/2012 21:07

when i say pulling, i mean it pulls back, not left to right, like suddenly taking my foot of the power makes it slow down faster, it doesn't go from left to right

sorry, not to be clearer

Is it little bits of pulling? Check your spark plugs...

NormaStanleyFletcher · 26/01/2012 21:19

By little bits I mean kind of stuttering

southeastastra · 26/01/2012 21:19

yes! i was wondering spark plugs too

OP posts:
NormaStanleyFletcher · 26/01/2012 21:24

Sudden loss of power could be ignition, air or fuel. Check fuel filter, spark plugs and air filter. I take it there is no engine light on on the dashboard? (Mr Fletch here)

southeastastra · 26/01/2012 21:34

no lights at all

it just feels like i've put foot on brake gently, then revs up again, when i take foot off accelarator, hoping it won't be expensive to fix

googling brings out cam belt things and i hope it isn't that

OP posts:
NormaStanleyFletcher · 26/01/2012 21:40

DH says prob not cam (he actually said no no no).

If fuel pump recently changed then it could be gunk from that that has made its way to the filter.

southeastastra · 26/01/2012 21:42

so do i need to take it to mechanic? can't it just clean itself Grin

OP posts:
HarrietSchulenberg · 26/01/2012 21:49

If it's only done it since you had your new fuel pump put on then I'd go with what Mr Norma said - some yuk has got to the fuel filter. Cambelts tend not to give any warning - they just go SNAP and there goes half your engine (RIP old Mondeo).

Has it been serviced recently? Within last 12 months? Service would give you new air and fuel filters. If you have a reliable garage you could mention the problem when you book. Or if you trust the garage that did your fuel pump you could ask them to have a quick look as a courtesy follow-up.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 26/01/2012 21:50

If you are near Aylesbury dh would do it for free Grin

southeastastra · 26/01/2012 21:55

i'm not far Grin

OP posts:
NormaStanleyFletcher · 26/01/2012 22:01

Honestly? Pm me. (though he does say you would need to buy the filters and it would cost you a bottle of wine)

southeastastra · 26/01/2012 22:10

ha i'm near watford but really do appreciate that norma!

OP posts:
southeastastra · 26/01/2012 22:14

so i need a new fuel filter?

OP posts:
NormaStanleyFletcher · 26/01/2012 22:15

No worries. The offer is there. Otherwise get a service, and make sure that the fuel filter is included. If you don't go to the dealer then it won't necessarily be v expensive.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 26/01/2012 22:17

Yy to New fuel filter. But if you get a mini service then it should cover the air filter and new plugs too

southeastastra · 26/01/2012 22:19

thanks norma, really appreciate advice, how much would a new filter be?

OP posts:
NormaStanleyFletcher · 26/01/2012 22:22

About 5 to 15 for the actual filter from europarts according to Mr fletch
