Any Lidl shoppers around? What do you buy from there and what do you avoid?!

A new Lidl store recently opened in the village so I had a nose around today. I've never shopped in there before and couldn't believe some of the prices, especially as we are on a major economy drive for the New Year (how un-original!)Any tips? TIA

Well if Rosie said "wellies" she is definitely lurking - if she had seen the boots she would know they are more like gaiters. Ha! Does she owe MN some copyright money?

Congratulations, MrsM (no idea what Willys is but you sounded so proud )

MrsMills · 14/01/2006 20:39

Thee's a little Willys too, but it's always so disappointing, I go for quantity every time.

Gingerbear - I remarked on this to DH. It was quite funny as we were on the train home from London and I found myself whipering "Rosie Millard might be a Mumsnetter". Why was I whispering? Mind you DH couldn't understand why anyone would read a thread about Lidl let alone remember details from it (like the horse blanket).

Thought I'd let Lidllers (?) know that all fruit and veg is half price at the moment, including papaya, beef tomatoes, pineapples.

I went this morning and filled the trolley to bursting - for £38, including nappies, toilet rolls, washing powder, dishwashing tablets, all the expensive and boring stuff. Sooooo proud of my thriftiness - will be off to Farmfoods to get the frozen stuff later!

Misspiggy · 16/01/2006 13:00

Thanks Lucycat! Think I'll pop in there tonight as I'm passing. I've been boring for Britain about how much shopping I got from Lidl for £40 over the weekend at home - poor kids and DH are sick of hearing about it. Must get out more!

Misspiggy - thanks so much for starting this thread!

I some of it yesterday and was inspired to schlep the 15 miles or so to our nearest one - I am well and truely converted!

Couldn't believe the bargains and range of food they had, 2 tuna steaks for £1.50, 10 ciabatta rolls for 99p. I could go on but I'm afraid of becoming an Lidl bore. It's too far for me to go every week but I will deffo be going once a month or so to stock up.

Our bank account salutes you!

No problem DissLocated! I made the mistake of going to Tesco this morning as I needed hairspray and dental floss which Lidl don't do (or didn't have last Friday when I went) and ended up spending £44 on not very much...I am sooooo weak! Have now decided I will only shop online from Tesco as I obviously can't be trusted to actually go in person

Well, I ventured into Lidls and Aldi today, and was so impressed too. I don't do a supermarket shop every week, but will def go back for dairy, washing stuff etc. In Aldi I found their meatballs- absolutely gorgeous, 81% pork, breadcrumbs, egg white, onions, salt, herbs, spices and veg oil. Not a preservative in sight. Also no added water ham, what a find! Thanks to the op for starting this thread!

Hi Everyone just discovered Mumsnet wot a good idea . Ive loved wot Ive read so far.Need your help on an unusual one. My old uncle has just been left on his own and CANT COOK AT ALL. Have you any really SIMPLE ideas for meals he can do easily on his own that will nourish him and keep him warm. (I've exhausted mine) I'm talking old fashioned food here and teenager 'Kevin' level. Thanks a lot Scattykat

Nemo2007 · 19/08/2007 17:53

we love Lidl coleslaw..really tasty even the reduced calorie one!!

Blu · 19/08/2007 17:59

ScattyCat - welcome, go to the 'Food' , or 'recipes' boards, look at the top, click on the 'add new thread' button, and start a new thread called 'simple food for can't-cook-old-gentleman' or something.

here, you will simply get lots of posts abpout shopping in Lidal.

DON'T buy LIdl sardines. The ring pull on the can is rubbish, more oil than sardines, Sainsbury's MUCH better and better value.

goingfor3 · 19/08/2007 18:00

There are some great beargins to to be found but many of the cakes and bicuits contain hydroginated fats.

goingfor3 · 19/08/2007 18:04

That's meant to say bargins not beargins

Bewilderbeast · 19/08/2007 18:07

cleaning products are great. Hayfever tablets better than tescos own. Mozzarella and feta good. Packs of sliced Salami and parma ham good. Jars of roasted peppers a real bargain. Biscuits good as are their version of M and Ms

Bewilderbeast · 19/08/2007 18:35

ooh having read half through thread I also get their basmati (never had a problem with it being hard), parmesan, anti bacterial handwash. I shop in Aldi sometimes as well, their cleaning products are good and their nappies are great (avoid aldi bum wipes though). But overall I think Lidl is a bit better.
