Any Lidl shoppers around? What do you buy from there and what do you avoid?!

A new Lidl store recently opened in the village so I had a nose around today. I've never shopped in there before and couldn't believe some of the prices, especially as we are on a major economy drive for the New Year (how un-original!)Any tips? TIA

Olive oil
Dark chocolate
Fake shreddies (I don't have such refined taste as Skribble!)
Tomato sauce for pasta in bottle (v high tomato content)
Pasta
Emmenthal
Blackcurrant squash
Sometimes fruit and veg is v good
Californian red wine
Non-bio washing powder
"Specials" e.g. sometimes they have big stuff like travel cots

We have an Aldi near us and I have been very plesantly surprised by the products I was told it was dreadful but have to disagree and the prices!
I have to agree with many on this thread and I buy what the Belgians/Germans love which are of great quality and price:

Flowers, months ago I was buying bunches of Amarylss(sp) for £2!
Rye Breads
Cold meats
Bacon
Meatballs - no chemicals in them pork.onions and spices!
Cheeses (swoon)
Parmesan is really cheap too
Juice (not from concentrate)
I get all my washing liquid (for clothes) and all my cleaning products too. mamia nappies (I sayit all the time) are beter than some of the leading brands and although bulkier are about £3 cheaper per pack
I love it

Pagan · 09/01/2006 14:05

The nappies are the best value I think. DD and DS have always used them. The bum wipes too are very thick and I can usually manage a full bum clean with only two (for pooey nappies).

The stores do take credit cards now but have only just started so perhaps they are taking a while to get round all the branches.

I think their cheeses are great and parmesan especially. For the green among us they also pay their staff well above the average hourly rate for supermarket workers and reusing carrier bags is no bad thing.

Only minus thing is that our local one has a sloping car park and the trolleys do not have breaks. Also because they have the funny flap thing to push your trolley through at the entrance, I have to lift DS over else he would be decapitated and they don't have double trolleys.

Apart from that I'll be going there from now on after redeeming my 5000 sainsbury points and only getting £25 off my bill. Hrumph

definitely the bread flour (not mix).

Baked beans are quite low salt compared to other brands - seem to go down well with the kids.

Lio · 09/01/2006 14:34

Ooh yes, forgot about parmesan.

yoyo · 09/01/2006 14:43

Parmesan, olive oil, some ham - all excellent. Camera film (Kodak) was shockingly cheap before Christmas. It is always empty in there so I just like to wander around and see what looks interesting. Ours is always spotlessly clean too.

We have an Aldi here, but I've never been in. Been to the Lidl's with my mum (200 miles from me) but couldn't browse as my mum doesn't browse, or she spends too much of her pension (saving to go on holiday).

I've discovered a Lidl about 7 miles away from me. Which should I visit as my exciting treat this week, Aldi or Lidl??

seb1 · 09/01/2006 16:07

Just checked out latest Aldi leaflet they accept cash, debit, mastercard and visa but not cheques, I believe our local Lidl's now does the same

fairydust · 09/01/2006 16:09

Easy - there's a new Lidi opened in Langley mill

fairydust · 09/01/2006 16:10

literally just off the A610

Easy · 09/01/2006 16:11

My life is so exciting ATM (not)

fairydust · 09/01/2006 16:11

Tinker · 09/01/2006 18:42

Agree that the nappies are ace, very leak proof.

fairydust · 09/01/2006 18:44

chocolatemummy · 09/01/2006 18:50

ch it as far as i know

missd · 09/01/2006 20:54

Pgan I agree with you re: the trolley thing. I LOVE lidls and buy loads of stuff there. Their bacon is excellent as is their sausages and chorizo. I buy:
Bacon
sausages
jam
nappies
bum wipes
biscuits
cakes - they do a fantastic custard filled brioche, don't think it'll be on the GI diet tho'
crisps
bread
chocolate
sqaush
tinned toms
cheese
fresh fruit juice
and their weekly offers are brilliant. Got DD1 some slippers for 99p
It always amazes me how much shoppinng I get for the money!

Skribble · 09/01/2006 22:55

MMh the big bag of little lemon wafer biscuits, I open them in the car and eat them on the way home until I feel sick .

Dropinthe · 09/01/2006 23:25

Went to Aldi this morning and was pleasantly surprised.

Only negative was that I looked at their website and saw this infrared thermometer . Thought it looked quite good but couldn't see it in store.

I found an assistant and asked about it and she pointed out that the offers change on a Thursday with a smug "you're new at this, aren't you?" kind of smile!

Oh well, will just have to ge back on Thursday then!
