Any Lidl shoppers around? What do you buy from there and what do you avoid?!

A new Lidl store recently opened in the village so I had a nose around today. I've never shopped in there before and couldn't believe some of the prices, especially as we are on a major economy drive for the New Year (how un-original!)Any tips? TIA

Thanks I have just signed up to the Lidls newsletter, I think I should get a job there the assistants get up to £8.50ph . I think its the multi tasking.

Skribble · 08/01/2006 23:28

I get the Cien bum wipes, sorry moist toilet tissue, DD likes it and gets a bit carried away bless .

Janh · 08/01/2006 23:32

So do I, Skribble - very popular here as bum wipes, make-up remover (DDs, not me) and multi-purpose cleaning cloths!

Wet Toilet Paper is the proper name and they are £1.49 for two packs of 70. Great value I think, I tryed persueding MIL but she still uses baby wipesat £2.49 a pack.

Janh · 08/01/2006 23:38

Ohhhh no, sorry, I meant the sensitive babywipes Shaysmummy mentioned.

Actually I did get the bumwipes once - they are flushable, and strictly speaking the babywipes aren't - but Certain People in my house got through them so fast it cost too much. So now we flush the babywipes and hope we don't clog up the sewers

TinyGang · 08/01/2006 23:39

You're right about the multi tasking I think. I noticed the manager of ours the other day mopping the floor, talking on a mobile to Lidl HQ and fixing a till - all at once!

Tinker · 09/01/2006 10:44

Mr Aldi and Mr Lidl are brothers.

Misspiggy · 09/01/2006 13:06

I've made a list of the items that you've all recommended and I'm off to Lidl tomorrow eve to stock up. Both DSs loved the apple juice that we bought on spec which is great as we go through so much of it. MrsP - the cat activity centre looks fab doesn't it?! Trouble is our 2 cats are a bit older and would probably just ignore the thing as they don't do the kitteny play thing anymore now...perhaps they need a little brother or sister?! Any luck getting your airer Janh?

I did a fortnight's shop in Lidl this morning for £44. For a family of 4. Hurrah!

misdee · 09/01/2006 13:15

are the cien nappies ok? dd3 is in disposables this week as am having to change her every hour or so (infected chicken pox on her bottom), and dont want to pay out a fortune.

Spidermama · 09/01/2006 13:16

I've been reliably informed that it's a good idea to buy olive oil there. Some of their chocolate is lovely. Also apparently they do a decent Baileys rip off with a very unpromising name. 'Queen Margo' or something similar.

serenity · 09/01/2006 13:19

Cien Nappies are fine, not as thin as the 'name' brands but they do their job!

misdee · 09/01/2006 13:20

ok, will check them tomorrow. cheers.

Surfermum · 09/01/2006 13:21

I use the cien pull ups Misdee and have no complaints.

polly28 · 09/01/2006 13:30

do they definately allow credit cards?

throckenholt · 09/01/2006 13:31

we go there about once every 2 months and stock up on things like jam, fruit juice, nappies etc.

I guess they are cheap because they are sourcing from all over Europe - so if you are concerned about the amount of miles your stuff travels before you buy it then Lidl wouldn't be your first choice.

throckenholt · 09/01/2006 13:31

I thought no to crdeit cards but debit cards are fine - I once gave my credit card by mistake and it was rejected.

throckenholt · 09/01/2006 13:32

another thing we get there - bread flour - cheap and tastes good.

misdee · 09/01/2006 13:33

is that the bread mixes or the flour? i need more bread flour.

QueenMab · 09/01/2006 13:37

The brand new one near me has a (handwritten!)sign on the door saying can only accept cash or debit cards - no credit cards or cheques. Don't know if this is just because it has only been open a couple of weeks?

QueenMab · 09/01/2006 13:40

Have used their dirt cheap bread flour in bread maker and it was absolutely fine.

misdee · 09/01/2006 13:42

can i get dried yeast there?

ooo so looking forward to a trip there now, iremember my mum used to shop there, and i used to live just round the corner, but only ever bought milk or bread there, as we had staff discounts at asda and safeway.

ladbrokegrove · 09/01/2006 13:44

Chorizo. Tinned toms.

Easy · 09/01/2006 13:46

My mum's Lidl doesn't take Credit Cards either. I think it's across all stores, to keep their costs down. (You do know that Ikea charge you extra to pay by credit card?)
