Any Lidl shoppers around? What do you buy from there and what do you avoid?!

A new Lidl store recently opened in the village so I had a nose around today. I've never shopped in there before and couldn't believe some of the prices, especially as we are on a major economy drive for the New Year (how un-original!)Any tips? TIA

Oh yes, I get the balm tissues, nas. Paper napkins are good value too, in lots of different plain colours and some printed ones. The white loo rolls (with kitten on) are about £2.75 for 9, which is cheaper than normal supermarket ones but they usually have an offer on so I've stopped buying those.

My DH is not even slightly foreign but loves un-British food - he stocks up on the flat tins of herring-in-sauce and other unsavoury things.

Tell you the oddest Stuff I've seen there recently - rubber boots for horses' feet (so they don't kick themselves) and New Zealand type rugs for horses (they wear them in fields in the winter) - what's that about????

popsycalindisguise · 07/01/2006 21:47

rigth you lot have tempted me
never ventured in yet but i will

notasheep · 07/01/2006 21:48

Dont forget to take your own carrier bags-as you have to pay for them otherwise!

MadameButterfly · 07/01/2006 21:55

My mum does a lot of her shopping in Lidl. She is always saying what good value it is, so much so that I found my local one on their website and will be paying them a visit in the next week or so.

Rubber boots for horses Janh??? Love it! Didn't realise that they had a problem with kicking themselves...aww! Hope you manage to get an airer, they had quite a few today so fingers crossed. DH was looking at the wedge cushions for his chair in the office but they only had leopardskin print left, a bit Bet Lynch for a strapping 6 footer We finished supper a while ago which included sirloin steak, sweetcorn and a lovely red wine that cost £2.49 all from Lidl so I'm definitely going back with my carrier bags and pound coins at the ready!

I love the natural yogurt that comes in sets of 4 individual pots.
Also... olive oil, white bread flour, most of the red wine, lots of fruit and veg, slices of gouda and edam, mature cheddar, frozen duck, lamb, jam, peanut butter, odd things you come across when you're in there, harmonicas, for instance - agree the children's trainers/boots are worth looking out for, and I picked up some good last minute presents there before Christmas..
The chocolate and biscuits can be a bit naff.
What's wrong with the milk - is it because it isn't organic?
I love LIDL and will soon have bored ALL my friends rigid with it

w5 lemon bathroom cleaner not only does it smell lovely, but it cleans wonderfully, easily too. i use it in the kitchen, shower, bathroom etc, leaves it all shiney and lemony. and a third of the price of cilitbang or whatever its called.
also the three in one dishwasher tablets work well for half the price of 'finish' ones.
def buy the fruit juices -so much better value!

polly28 · 08/01/2006 02:12

can you use a credit card ?

hornbag · 08/01/2006 09:33

No, you can only use debit cards.

Janh · 08/01/2006 11:03

If you're going to make a habit of shopping at Lidl it would be worth buying a handful of those big orange flat-bottomed shopping bags from Sainsburys (75p each) - esp if you'll be getting lots of tins and bottles. Ordinary carrier bags won't do and Lidl's own are really small (no gusset or something).

seb1 · 08/01/2006 22:09

lidl do accept credit cards now

mumfor1sttime · 08/01/2006 22:13

The cheese is nice, they do smoked cheese which is gorgeous! Try the juice called 'ace' this is lovely and good for you!
Have a lidl just round the corner, use it to buy things like milk, cheese, loo roll etc. Have never done a weekly shop.

MrsPreston · 08/01/2006 22:14

I've found most things to be great from Lidl, including yogs and milk.

don't buy baked beans and tinned soup. I don't like their basmati rice either, it stays hard no matter how long its cooked for.

biskies (weetabix) are great, ds would choose them over original Weetabix - but don't buy the really cheapo version that look like bricks.

DH loves their tinned rice pudding, 19p.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil is excellent.

We are getting 2 kittens tomorrow so I will definitely be going to get the cats' activity centre "special" for £19.99.

Dh discovered Lidl when we were trying to save some money. I was very sniffy at first - cos I'm sad like that - but I WAS WRONG; I admit it. (Dh would love to see that in print)

It does have this 'fell off a lorry' approach to selling odd things at odd times - one week it was all equpiment to do with horse-riding! All very Only Fools and Horses..but I must say I've had some fantastic things from Lidl; and such a variety too. I think the food is great. I don't buy much in the way of toiletries from them, but we used their nappies most successfully and their clothes detergent. They have a good web site too to check out forthcoming offers.

I always feel faintly embarressed to re-use the carrier bags though. People seem to feel sorry for you for shopping there for some reason. Their loss I say! It's saved us loads of money for sure.

Blu · 08/01/2006 22:22

Funnily enough the Brixton lidl is not stocking rug or boots for horses. Harrumph! It's just not fair!

fireflyfairy2 · 08/01/2006 22:27

Their fish fingers smell like my daddys feet

I like the forzen spring rolls

Heathcliffscathy · 08/01/2006 22:38

blu

Skribble · 08/01/2006 22:50

In a couple of weeks they are doing lots of pet specials, cats, dogs and fish.

From mon 16th its DIY.
From 19th its Bathroom inc taps, shower mixers, towel rails, rugs etc.

They still have lots of stationery in and my local has the leopard print wedge cushions .

Gillian76 · 08/01/2006 23:16

Don't have a Lidl nearby but there's an Aldi. Are they much of a muchness?

Janh · 08/01/2006 23:19

Yep!

They had lovely 81 pc wooden trainsets at Christmas for £9.99 which included a battery train that lights up.

I was lucky to get one - they got snapped up and were being sold on Ebay for 25.00 plus. I've noticed that happens a lot to Lidls items.

ShaysMummy · 08/01/2006 23:24

I buy the Cien sensitive baby wipes. Absolutely brilliant for 99p per pack, beats £2 odd for pampers sensitive and just as good.
