£500 for a mattress? Are they having a laugh?

I need a new mattress as mine is so hard it's lke sleeping on the kitchen table. I've just had a quick look at John Lewis's and they're about £500 plus!

Is there anywhere cheaper? Or is that the going rate for a half decent mattress?

i paid 600 for my silent srung divan with mattress. its heaven to sleep on.

some of the Ikea ones are absolutely fine and a lot cheaper.

when you think about how many hours you sleep on it per day and how many days (assume you will have it at least 5 years - that is 1700 nights) then it starts to seem silly NOT to spend that much on a mattress.
Cheap mattresses are uncomfortable - thats the bottom line. Sorry!

dreams bed superstores are good. we got our new bed there and the mattress that was on it on the display was four times as much as the bed we got one for about £250 which is very comfy.

apparently argos are good as well.

I agree it's important but if it's really going to be £500 then I won't be allowed to buy it.

The problem with Ikea DH is that they have non-standard measurements.

our new mattress cost £500 in the sale at mfi but we didn't pay the insurance company did after dd2 was accidently born on it!

BUT we have an ikea one in the spare room and it is verrrrrrrrrrrry comfortable

Ours was 600+ and we are still commenting on how comfy it is 3 yrs later Definitely worth every penny Cheap ones just not the same

we went for a cheap argos one and it's horrible! wish i had spent a lot more on one

that was my arguemewnt, in 5years we had had 3 different cheap matresses and beds. all got very uncomfortable in the end. this one is fab. worth every penny.

We got ours from Dreams too (they seem to have a constant sale...) Ours would have cost double at John Lewis. The salespeople are a bit pushy there, BUT they do encourage you to try out mattresses by lying on them for at least 10 minutes.

I recently bought a king size bed from Debenhams for £700 (half price),one of those with the memory foam. Very good make with the queen seal of approval, if it means anything....

I have always put this purchase off all my life and put up with a cheap mattress from Argos because I could not bring myself to pay all that money.

now I know i should have done it before. It is wonderful. sleep is so important for your quality of life. it is money well spent

I went to John Lewis first and I thought it was extortionate. what are their beds made of, gold?

We've got one of those ones made out of stuff developed by NASA - yes it was v expensive, but wow to sleep on. Dh bought it when I had really bad spd when pregnant with ds2. I've never been more grateful for anything in my life!

where do you live? habitat have got fantastic mattresses for £70 in their clearance place just outside manchester. usually £600.

Ooh yes, Tempur is fantastic, we just went for the overlay to save costs (DH works for a mobility company so got it a tiny bit cheaper).

Pillows are brill too.

Are you a Costco member? They had Silent Night mattresses on sale. Paid £450 for a king-sized bed 3 years ago and it's still going strong. Heaven to sleep on as well.

dh lusts after a tempur mattress.

Definitely worth the money. Don't get a cheapo as you'll only end up with backache and have to fork out again sooner rather than later.
