£500 for a mattress? Are they having a laugh?

I need a new mattress as mine is so hard it's lke sleeping on the kitchen table. I've just had a quick look at John Lewis's and they're about £500 plus!

Is there anywhere cheaper? Or is that the going rate for a half decent mattress?

My aunt had a Tempur mattress and chucked it after 2 months. Said it was pants.

Haven't got the pillows - think I will get them.

You can get a travel overlay apparently - I might just be sad enough to do this

I want a wool mattress topper .
I think I'm going to justify it as our 7th wedding anniversary present next year (apparently 7 is wool )

these mattresses are heaven

£500 is quite cheap for a decent mattress - ours just crept into 4 figures 9 years ago and is still going strong.

spidermama · 24/11/2005 19:01

Good God milge!
I should hope it would be at that price.

The trouble is I want one NOW, but I don't have the money. We may have the money in a month or two depending on dh's work. We can never tell what he'll earn (if anything) from one month to the next.

I could do HP though couldn't I. On the never never, as it were.

We were about £600 for our silent night one 2

Milge · 24/11/2005 19:27

lots of places do interest free if you spend over £x. I'd do that if i were you - we do whenever we see its on offer - just make sure you cancel the DD and pay the balance off before they start charging you extortionate rates!

donnie · 24/11/2005 19:28

agreed - a good mattress is designed to last at least 10 years, soo £500 is only £50 per year - less than a pound a week!!!
I should be a sales rep!
we got ours from selfridges about 7 years ago for a lot of money but it is worth it and it is going to last a good many years more!

spidermama · 24/11/2005 20:03

donnie what a great way of putting it. That'll form the basis of my argument for dh.
I'm forever in your debt.
