Do your children have themed bedrooms?

......and if so, what are they?

A friend of mine kitted her son's room out as Buzz Lightyear and he walked in and said he didnt like Buzz anymore!

This has made me think.

Ds wanted Buzz, then Scooby Doo (!!) and now Dinosaurs! I do think he would like a Dino room as he loves them a lot. I thought I would paint the room a plain colour and have plain curtains and then put up some posters of dinos and get him a quilt cover. Any other cheap dino ideas?

What rooms do your children have? Do you regret it or do they still like them?

All of my rooms are themed. The theme is 'Mummy has no taste, time, sense of style or money'

Rented... DD's room is yellow through no choice of my own!

spursmum · 01/09/2005 11:35

I'm afraid that I'm doing my ds' room as Thomas the tank engine!!! He has ASD and Thomas is the main fixation so it keeps him quiet!!
But I cheat and just use stickarounds, posters and bedding etc. I keep the walls one colour so its not too hard to change if he wants it done.

ninah · 01/09/2005 11:36

hate themes with a vengeance
Ds has nice blue walls and some of his paintings and some of mine

Thomcat · 01/09/2005 11:36

Not not themed.
Her walls are palin cream and the carpet is beige.

She has a pink duvet set with a big emb tree on it and birds and rabbits and butterflies etc, all in tonal colours, with matching curtians and a rug. We've bought net butterflies that we've attached and placed round the room. The main thing in her room is the dark pink bed cannopy over the bed. Furniture is all plain wood.

dropinthe · 01/09/2005 11:37

Ha! My two sons share a room and there is only one theme going on-its called,"mix and match ANYTHING bright and lary that goes with the bright blue walls we inherited" kind of theme.

Ds1 (at age 2) had blue walls and on one we painted clouds. We put aeroplane shelves up on that wall and an aeroplane light. I also stencilled some aeroplanes and stars at various points in the room. As he got older he had different posters or pictures on the plain walls. He then moved out at age 5 into a football themed room which he is more than happy with at age 7. Ds2 inherited the aeroplane room and is still very happy with it.

IMO it is a mistake to go for a "character" theme unless you are prepared to decorate on a very regular basis.

suzywong · 01/09/2005 11:44

No
They don't

harpsichordcarrier · 01/09/2005 11:46

not a theme as such but a very nice Miffy mural that took me days but can just be painted over if she gets bored. Far too tight to buy curtains, matching covers etc etc...

Lizzylou · 01/09/2005 11:49

DS had a bright nursery and now Jungle curtains and quilt, cream walls, with lots of bright toys/paintings etc...not a theme as such, just a nice, bright fun bedroom that we can change easily when he is older...he is 17mths old tho, so will wait for him to start wanting Thomas/Bob the Builder etc!!!

Gobbledigook · 01/09/2005 11:51

No hate themes - MIL was just telling me about the overly-matching butterfly room SIL is doing for her dd (almost 4) - it sounded hideous but I had to make out I was enthusiastic!!

Boys rooms are plain curtains, plain walls, plain carpets but ds3 has a dinosaur duvet cover and pillowcase on his bed (which he isn't in yet cos he's only 1!) and ds1 and ds2 have either cars or stripes duvets. The striped ones are yummy - much more tasteful.

garden room

Lizzylou · 01/09/2005 11:59

Katzguk, that looks fab! Did you do it yourself or hire someone?

scotlou · 01/09/2005 12:12

My kids didn't get a choice - dd's room belonged to ds first and has plain yellow walls, primary coloured light fitting and a couple of fabric wall hangings - a train and a clown. That's it. (no curtains - plain velux blinds). When we moved ds to his current room pending arrival of dd, we did nothing other than change the light fitting (Ikea - primary colours) and stick some Ikea animal postcards in frames for the walls.

fairydust · 01/09/2005 12:15

dd has plain walls - then has disney princess removal stickers - bedding and curtains to match

IlanaK · 01/09/2005 13:18

Yes, my son's rooms have themes, but they are not too in your face. Both had classic pooh as babies. When we moved here, ds1 has a lovely wallpaper border that I got from the US which is smiley insects and trees. He has some matching bedding and a couple of insect stuffed animals, but that is it.

We are in the process of changing ds2's room to a jungle animal theme, but again its not very overt.

I have never given them a choice of what to have and I would not do the latest "character" as their likes change.

Nemo1977 · 01/09/2005 13:24

we are just about to do ds room and i have got him bedding with trucks n tractors on, a road mat, have seen a fire engine lamp and bob bilder stickarounds that easily come off. The wallpaper is a plain beige, blue curtains and will have a plain carpet.

The small room is wallpapered in a green colour with a couple of winnie the pooh foam wall decorations, winnie curtains and a rug. All easy to replace when the DB is old enough to favour something else.

NomDePlume · 01/09/2005 13:25

No, my kids don't have themed rooms. DS1 & 2's bedrooms are the same shade of blue (plain matte paint)with dark blue curtains and beech furniture. DD's is girly pink matte paint with butterfly curtains with white metal bed & and white furniture. I do think that unless it is done carefully, theming of rooms can just look incredibly naff.

Nbg · 01/09/2005 13:25

No themes here.
I'm not all that keen on logos and characters although...

my plan, eventually is to make my own stencil of the Butterfly from the Hungry Caterpillar and paint that on to one of dd's walls.
At the moment it's a really light pastel blue colour which was how it was when we moved in with beech furniture.
Very plain and boring!
