Do your children have themed bedrooms?

......and if so, what are they?

A friend of mine kitted her son's room out as Buzz Lightyear and he walked in and said he didnt like Buzz anymore!

This has made me think.

Ds wanted Buzz, then Scooby Doo (!!) and now Dinosaurs! I do think he would like a Dino room as he loves them a lot. I thought I would paint the room a plain colour and have plain curtains and then put up some posters of dinos and get him a quilt cover. Any other cheap dino ideas?

What rooms do your children have? Do you regret it or do they still like them?

The theme in DS's room is "jumble sale chic" like the rest of the house, really

Riebee · 02/09/2005 12:03

nope I don't like cartoon characters. They did used to have the odd character duvet but i was mightly relieved when they went off them. They now have nice plain ones. I'm a great big meaney and don't let them blue tack up posters either. They can have the odd poster in a frame if they want... I was the same with clothes, they could have character socks or pants but thatwas the limit...

logic · 02/09/2005 12:11

Oh I like themes, makes the room look lovely and shows that you've put some thought and effort in.

The nursery (dd's room) is sunshine yellow with a Winnie-the-Pooh theme and solid pine furniture - it has outlasted ds and the furniture is grown-up enough to keep. Ds' room is blue and white with a boats theme. It's fairly subtle and not a fad, commercial theme and it will do him for years.

beckybrastraps · 02/09/2005 13:10

I was really anti themes, but ds's obsession with animals (dolphins and rhinos in particular) has caught up with us. He's been given various things for his room (glow in the dark dolphins, mobiles etc.) and dh has just made him a new bed and covered it in pictures of rhinos, elephants and giraffes. They can however be removed if necessary. Just hope dd likes animals, as they will be sharing until we get more bedrooms!

Twiglett · 02/09/2005 13:11

DS' room is white but has one wall covered in dinosaurs and dinosaur bedding .. does that count?

dejags · 02/09/2005 13:14

DS1 has cowboys
DS2 has spacement/rockets

I only use replaceable things to create a theme (curtains & bedding), that way when they get bored in 6 months time it's easily changeable.

Having said that DS1's curtains cost an arm and a leg, I'll be seriously cheesed off if he announces he don't like em anymore.

Was going to reply here yesterday and say no but on looking at the kids room last night I think I have to say weve got a bit of a viking theme going on in there, what with a shield and a picture of a longship on the wall and various toy axes lying round and lots of history books of that era too not to mention the papier machete skull on the bookcase with a horned helmet on it (groan) Dds has said that hed like shields all along the side of his bed so that it looks more like a ship but for some reason we never got round to that one (a tad OTT me thinks)

sweetkitty · 02/09/2005 13:49

oops I'm going against the grain here but when we move (NEXT WEEK) DD is having very light pink walls with a baby doll border and baby doll quilt and curtains. She will also have her very first cot (moses basket/coslept/travel cot) which chances are she won't sleep in.

I've waited a long time to give my little girl her own room and it's going to be a bit special.

Very boring 006? A bit strong that dont you think. Surely it each to their own? Have you thoguth that we might be just very broke? Or practical? or environmentally friendly possibly? Duvet covers curtains etc are expensive (at least to me they are) and are only bought when necessary. Also I dont like the whole disposable culture of throw things away when you are tired of them so what I buy I buy to last. Neither do I like the pressure put on parents to buy into the latest 'theme' with matching duvet lamp etc etc.

HuggyBear · 02/09/2005 16:38

We did the boys room in winnie the pooh when they were small.

Now we've just moved house we've done it in Bob the Builder, hoping that it'll help him settle in

Riebee · 02/09/2005 17:19

well said tarantula. It does seem like a waste to get rid of perfectly good bedding just because they've gone off a certain theme ( although I admit to being glad to see the back of mine). My boys have a lot of their own paintings and drawings framed so we can keep changing them every so often. They love seeing their artwork up on the wall.

logic · 02/09/2005 19:53

I'm with 006 on this one. There's been an awful lot of anti-fun snobbery on this thread IMO.

Clayhead · 02/09/2005 20:15

My kids have anti fun boring rooms but haven't complained...yet

Wallace · 02/09/2005 20:15

ds and dd share a room. It is still magnolia from when we moved in 3 years ago. Now I think about it maybe it is butterscotch (?) or something like that, not magnolia...

I have no idea how to decorate a room that a 6 yearold boy and a 4 year old girl share. Answers on a postcard plaese

hmm...a jungle or woodland theme? Something from a favourite book? Chronicles of Narnia? An underwater theme? - dolphins for your dd and divers and sharks for your ds? A musical theme? I'm thinking of having my two share a room at some point if they want to so I'll have the same dilemma! Stickarounds are good and you could let both children have 2 walls each to decorate or something like that?

Wallace · 02/09/2005 20:58

thanks logic - you've given me an idea! Ds is really into fish, and dd loves mermaids....A sea theme would be lovely

We love themes rooms and I agree that it can be expensive but I always pass on to others either by selling or gifting depending on what are needs are at the time. When they were babies we had teddie bear paw prints around the room to a teddie, now they are older they have had the choice. aslo you generally repaint a room every 3 or 4 years and it is fun to do. Seeing their face and hearing their excited voice whilst exploring their rooms has been the best reward. Dd is into Disney princess my indulgence but chose lilac walls ro complement. Ds is into nemo and buzz so walls are blue to complement both schemes this autumn

Hulababy · 02/09/2005 21:13

But Cod - the princess stuff isn't for adults. We don't have to like it at all. But many little girls do love it - that's who it is aimed at after all.

Think we are in the same position as the majority on here - partially themed. DD has the room which was decorated as a nursery when I was pregnant with DS (we didn't know the sex). So she has three yellow walls and one blue wall with a mural of a rainbow and clouds done by DH. Then she has beech/white furniture, a yellow lampshade, blue curtains and primary coloured cot bedding.

DS got chucked out of his bedroom when DD was on the way but got a much bigger bedroom. He has blue walls that are the same colour as the background to the names on Mumsnet posts (IYSWIM) with some white cube shelves on the wall with the wall behind these painted dark red and dark red curtains. He then has boat bedding, lampshade and rug in blue and dark red. He has had this about 1.5 years now and I expect his sister's room will be decorated again before his. Although we are currently talking about painting the kitchen wall next to the table which is rather more desperate.

caligula · 02/09/2005 22:15

Has this thread kicked off yet?

I'm not anti-fun, I just can't be arsed.

Chozen · 02/09/2005 22:15

Hi everyone, I'm new to this but I just wanted to tell everyone about my baby's new bedroom. We've done it a lovely warm (not too dark) pink and have bought the new eeyore themed bedding, matching curtains border and uplighter etc from argos (it's beautiful). For furniture to match we've got her a pink set of canvas/wood wardrobe, shelving unit and chest of drawers (also from argos) for a bargain price of £69.99 for the lot!! I know it's a big fuss but how often do you get a baby girl (and I think she'll be my only one)... I thought it'd be lovely to give her a precious space all of her own.
