Do ankle bracelets still have sexual connotations for younger people today?

Back in the 80s wearing an ankle bracelet showed you were up for sex or open for men to approach you, is it still a thing now with the younger generation?

Not heard that one before. They were only ever jewellery to me, (though my mum associated them with prostitution.)

Lugol · 02/04/2026 17:51

I've never heard that before either.

Left ankle: the wearer is married or in a committed relationship. Right ankle: available or open to new experiences (to put it delicately). Or, all of that is a load of bollocks and you can wear what you like.

Are you asking because you want to signal your availability or gauge someone else's?

I'm so flipping innocent to these things - I just thought they were ankle bracelets some liked to wear...

You might want to read up about pineapples and flamingoes too then...!

Ha ha
A couple on a recent cruise I went on explained the meanings of various charms on an ladies ankle
Their openness reminded me of the swinging couple from the Benidorm comedy program!

This does all remind me of the 70s/80s idea that if a man wore an earing in his left ear he was straight, but if he wore it in his right, he wanted to get the beaten out of him.

Randomly, I was reading about anklets the other day.

Oh, I know about them. But there seems so many 'signals' I'm still unaware of...

Seriously? What?
Half a dozen pineapples are going to be pretty conspicuous, but unless you're wandering from aisle to aisle with a cucumber, condoms, lube, and absolutely nothing else, I can't see how that's going to be particularly productive.

I can confirm that Brillo Pads and Marmite have no effect whatsoever.

This morning I tried a baguette at a suggestive angle, surrounded by mangoes, tinned pineapple and a spicy curry sauce. No flirtations with fellow shoppers to be had. Maybe I'll hang some underwear on the baguette next time...

Isn't this one of those urbsn myths like the one about people who have pampus grass in their garden?

I think my mum told me that in the 80‘s (she wasn't very good at having age appropriate conversations).

I think she was having you on.

No, she believed it. She’s a bit dim though , she also helpfully pointed out a woman on the bus who apparently used to be a prostitute. I can’t remember if said woman had an ankle bracelet on though!
