So I've decided to stop taking the pill. What condoms would you recommend?

Been on the pill for years and years. I've been with dh for 11 years, and probably took it for the 10 years before that too.
It's been changed numerous times but even the low oestrogen one I am on just now is causing breast pain.
We only tend to use condoms when absolutely necessary (when my pill is cancelled out by antibiotics etc) and then, tbh, any from the supermarket will do
However, I'm now planning on using condoms as our long term contraception, and consequently I'm looking for recommendations.
Dh doesn't mind them, but neither is he their biggest fan, so ones that allow the best sensation would suit best. Thanks in advance.

If you've found this page in search of condoms that have been tried and tested by fellow Mumsnet users, you might find our guide to the best condoms useful. Hope this helps! MNHQ

You will probably want to try different brands and types until you find one that gives the best sensation. Every cock is a different size and shape after all!

If he's average sized then I'd recommend Mates Thin for best sensation for both of you. If he's on the large side then I'd go with Skins XL. The better the fit, the better the sensation AND the less chance of breakage.

Sky good. We have used condoms for 10 years with no problem at all and no slip ups.

jamaisjedors · 13/01/2017 14:44

Ok, that was SKYN

Would recommend Mates skins as thinner and latex free so don't make me itch-also can get them XL so fit DH betterBlush

Thanks, I'll try those. Went on to Superdrug online and could easily see myself ordering 50 quids worth of different brands/ sensations Shock
Off to get some now!

OP you can order from here:
www.freedoms-shop.com
It's free standard delivery in plain packaging, and it's run by the NHS. Excellent value too.

Really can't recommend Mates. I have an 18 year old proof of their failure for me.

Depends also on the size and shape of the wearer, I think.

My DP really struggles with an average one. It barely goes half way and is quite painful and tight.

I thought "yeah, yeah" when he told me, and then after watching him put on a few different types and sizes over different times I cringed for him.

I found a site called "Theyfit" which do made to measure ones. They were much better.

It depends how big he is. We tried Mates (the ordinary ones are £1.49 for 12 at Home Bargains) - but they are too tight for him.
For years, we used Durex Extra Safe and he likes those because they are a bit baggy at the top.
We now use Durex XL (blue box) - they are baggy at the top and roll right down to the base with ease - even I can put them on. Lube is also important for me. I find the Skyn premium (silicone) is best - it does not dry out. We take quite long time when we dtd and water based lubes can dry out and leave me sore with condoms.

If you are looking for contraception only, and not protection from STDs, then Trojan in the USA do one made from lamb membrane rather than latex, which is by far the most sensitive. They are expensive, though, and you'd have to buy online rather than in a UK retail store.

If you want to stick with latex and something a bit more affordable, the Japanese make the thinnest, and generally most highly regarded condoms. Try Okamoto Crown Skinless Skin or Beyond Seven. We wouldn't use anything else. They are both straight sided and coloured (pink and blue, respectively) and the Crown ones are the most common ones used in the US porn industry, because they can stretch to almost any size without being too tight.

Everything I've mentioned can be bought from the undercovercondoms.co.uk which we've used for years with no problem.

Are you planning on having kids? If no, get your tubes tied or have him get a vasectomy. I got a tubal ligation and it was the best thing I've ever done.

claraschu · 18/04/2017 05:46

I used a cervical cap, and it is great. The statistics on its failure rate look quite high, though I think this is because people aren't consistent about using them right (4% failure rate with correct use www.pamf.org/teen/sex/birthcontrol/cervicalcap.html).

I used the cervical cap and an awareness of my cycle, so would be more careful when I was ovulating.

I am mentioning this, as people never seem to think of the cap (and perhaps the diaphragm) any more, but they are actually great methods to use.

So the baton for contraception has been handed over to your DH? As Condoms are not as reliable as the Pill, surely he should be getting a vasectomy?
