I just don't want to look out of place. I know people say anything goes, but doesn't that mean "anything outrageous goes"? I can't imagine it covers a comfy pair of elderly jeans, if you see what I mean. And hair and make up? I am really very ordinary looking and a bit out of my depth. I'm not worried about any activity that might take place, just about looking wrong.

Depends where you are going. Women are always easier, think victoriana, corsets or even fancy lingerie if leather, pvc and latex doesn't appeal to you. The one I go to has a dress code and does not allow jeans and no full frontal nudity but you can contact them if you want to run an idea of what you want to wear past them.

I don't think that the things that turn me on have got a particular style of clothing associated, if you see what I mean.

Depends which one you are going to. Torture Garden in London is very glamorous, some are more relaxed. Also depends on your figure. Corsets are better for the fuller figure, rubber if you are skinny. You can't really be overdressed at a fetish club TBH. Lingerie is ok or a short black dress with heels and stockings. Jeans are generally a no no, but depends on how strict the dress code is.
