A 3 and a 1 for my DD. 2nd year taking them.

She’s ok with it after initial disappointment. She can still do her plans.

Namechanged4obviousreasons · 21/08/2025 11:10

My dd sat AQA English Language and although it’s given her grade and endorsement grade, it doesn’t give any mark so she can’t tell how close she was to the boundary. Does anyone else have this and know if we should have a mark somewhere? She’s done very well but disappointed that she got a grade higher in all mock tests and doesn’t know whether to ask for a re-mark.

Also, if she wanted to request a re-mark, can she wait to request this until she goes back to school in just under a fortnight? It doesn’t affect her getting into sixth form and I’m guessing a lot of those asking will need to be prioritised for getting into college etc. We already know she was 2 marks off the next grade in Sociology, so were possibly thinking of a re-mark for this and maybe English Language, depending on the actual she got.

swampwitch0 · 21/08/2025 11:10

Glad her plans can go ahead @Witchbells

Well done to all the amazing mums and dads out there - not easy to guide a teen through GCSEs with so many challenges and distractions out there, and our kids have had their extra challenges due to COVID lockdown which no one even seems to think about now!

@QueenMabby with twelve 9s your dc is likely in the top 20 achievers in the whole country… how does that feel?! You must be somewhere floating near cloud 9 I guess.

I feel very pleased for her. She works hard but is naturally very clever. She is her own worst critic though!

The school shpuld have given you a gcse candidate info pack...or it may be in their website?

DD wants to query one result (8) for a subject she is taking for A Level (overall she's thrilled she got all 9s and 8s) so I emailed the Exams Officer but got their Out of Office reply.

Which staff member should I approach instead?

And is the process we and teachers view the script and then decide if we want to proceed with a remark?

I would imagine that at least until early afternoon everyone in school will be tied up with getting the results out, maybe try later to contact someone about a remark.

So proud of my DD - she had 38% attendance in Yr11 due to EBSA and ended up sitting her GCSE’s in a specialist unit, having taught herself a lot of the content. She had to drop 2, but insisted on taking 8 so she had the option to apply for 6th form. She achieved
1 x 9
5 x 7
2 x 6

We both cried when we saw them!!

Thats fantastic, well done to your DD.

No, the pressure and anxiety comes from the schools attitude these days.

Schools are judged on how many passes they get. The requirements for further study add to the pressure. Both my kids needed really high grades for their chosen A levels and 6th forms. I did O levels 40 years ago and the whole thing was quite different.

ditismooi · 21/08/2025 11:13

Well pleased ! Got the results he needed for a alevels . Off to get him enrolled at the new 6th form Very pleased with the history which we slogged through together from yr10 mocks a disastrous 2 all the way to a 6 ! Now the real hard work begins . Pleased with Spanish as he smashed it getting a solid 5. These were the two I helped with . It was nice to see so many of his teachers and them being so pleased for him .

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 21/08/2025 10:27

We think he got the wrong results as he
got two 6s and the rest 4 and 5s. He was not expecting that and I couldn’t be more proud of him. 7 years ago this boy was broken from his dad dying, and he’s always hated school the days I had to drag him out of bed. Yet here he is absolutely blasting those exams.

Hope my husband is having a cold beer up there baba to celebrate, his son is celebrating with a can of coke.

This has mad me sob this morning!

What wonderful news!! And massive congratulations to you too for getting him there!!

TravellingSpoon · 21/08/2025 11:14

DD got her pass in math and managed to get a 6 by 2 marks. She is thrilled by that but upset she had dropped a grade in English Lit after being predicted a 9. And she passed French with a 5 after being convinced she had failed.

She is off to enrol in college now.

SilverSnaffles · 21/08/2025 11:14

I think, for the vast majority, the pressure comes from the schools, the press and being so visible via social media etc, not the parents.

I have not seen one parent be anything other than supportive, making sure their dc know that, no matter how they do, they will be loved and supported through the next stage and there is always a way forward. It’s the schools that keep telling them that anything less than top grades at GCSE will mess up their whole future. Honestly the amount of pressure the school put my dd’s cohort through was appalling, it just made the whole thing harder for them. How on earth can they do their best work whilst struggling with severe anxiety in case they fail?

Our family sees things slightly differently, as several of us have taken different routes to their qualifications/careers, due to illness/disability. Unfortunately, even knowing that dd was still affected by the constant pressure from the school.

I wouldn’t mind so much if it felt like it was misguided, but coming from a place of wanting the best for their pupils. Sadly for a lot of schools it’s more about league tables and published results.

Glad her plans can go ahead @Witchbells

Thank you!

It’s just a case of ‘try, try, try again.’ She’s got big plans and her college is right behind her. She’ll get there.

No, the pressure and anxiety comes from the schools attitude these days.

The schools may be exerting the pressure, they need the results as that's what parents wanted to be able to compare schools. However, a simple read of this site today and last week does indicate a high level parental involvement which can't be good for the students.

SuperTrooper1111 · 21/08/2025 11:17

JudgeJ · 21/08/2025 10:58

May a very old woman make an observation? It seems that 'these days' the anxiety around results is made worse by mothers (and fathers) getting so involved and hysterical which will inevitably be felt by the students, I don't recall this level of involvement either as a pupil or parent. We, in the '60s, got detailed results by post, often on Saturday, schools didn't open on Thursday, but we could see passes in the local rag on Thursday. As a parent we drove our child to school, sat in the car with fingers crossed as they went in.
Good luck to all your youngsters.

You can make an observation but, seriously, what a comment to leave on a forum of parents trying celebrate their children's achievement on the biggest day of their lives so far! Read the room, perhaps? We have to be involved because of the sheer amount of work involved. My DD has struggled with school-related anxiety since Y3. She sat 25 papers for her GCSEs and that was less than a lot of students. If we left them to it, so many kids would buckle under the pressure.

Mycatismad · 21/08/2025 11:17

DD got more then enough to get into 6th form but she's really disappointed with her grades. A few are 1 or 2 marks of the grade boundaries so their being remarked.
I'm so incredibly proud of her, I just hope she realises how amazing she has done

Well done to all the DC . DS got less than predicted but enough to stay at school for his A levels . 88877776654 . He is happy and I’m not surprised - I could see how hard he had to work for that 5 and that 4 ( both of which are a few marks off the next grade ) . DS2 got his 7 in English Language . It’s a good day - but worried though as not yet heard from a couple of good friends who I know were worried about their DC

I am so pleased! I don’t know you at all but from my time on education threads (my DD just finished A levels) I have been aware of your DD’s efforts and was so hoping you would post good news today! So many congratulations to her from a random person on Mumsnet 😂

AnonymousBleep · 21/08/2025 11:34

My son's Eng Lit score was bizarrely low - predicted a 9 and got a 6. I find that really odd as English is my subject, and I am confident he'd revised well and knew his stuff. Obviously marking for Eng Lit is subjective and I think I'm going to push for a remark. Anyone else experienced this?

AQA?
If so, I'd definitely push for a remark
