Teachers do not get the marks the day before. The centre gets the marks the day before and access to that info is very strictly controlled.

Not all teachers in all schools are automatically given the results for their class - I won't be given that until September. But I can log in and see everything. Some of my colleagues may not be able to if they've not set up their accounts.

Yes it depends on each school, in schools I've had experience with its shared with staff the day before especially those who are coming in. On the day they have the spreadsheets or info on the marks students got overall and per paper printed a few times for staff in each subject to acess. My teachers all knew my marks beforehand. Different schools may do it differently but oens I've had experience with do it as such. They go through start identifying those who may not have passed key subjects and also make certificates for those who did exceptionally well.

Wednesday is restricted release which should only be to the head of centre and senior staff. Classroom teachers should not have access to that information until results day.

I will know when I log in at about 7am but certainly not the day before.

Edited

Yes initially SLT, Head of years and Head of departments get it first and they make the documents and then share later, most do get the info at 7am when they come into school. I'm just saying they will likely all know (has always happened in my experience) the grades of students, the marks and have access to their marks per paper, as mine did - that's how i found out my marks per exam paper and ny teachers (some classroom teachers others also SLT) pointed out my high marks for specific subjects and also before I opened them did tell me I'd be happy as they knew them. That's how it's been in schools I've had experience with.

All staff by 7am have access to printed out tables (for each subject) with grades per student and the marks for each exam paper in that subject. Some will know the day before and those charts and tables are done the day before, along with certificates they make with students grades etc. Most staff who have classes do try and come in and are given at the least the data for their class then.

According to Ratty’s school, which doesn’t have a 6th form, everyone going elsewhere, they get a one hour window to collect results

Us parents are waiting in the car

So let’s assume the most likely scenario that he grabs results paper and runs, can we get his marks, or scripts ourselves online? If need be.

Or do I prompt him to ask for his English Language marks, which he isn’t going to do! I could try - nope think it’s pointless

Does the school get their papers back? Will they be in the building?

Yes you can equest to see scripts/exam papers - AQA don't charge for this, some other exam boards do though. It's not lots of admin to get the scripts sent to you so most schools I know of don't charge for that. The total marks are on the results paper, he will need to ask staff for the marks per exam paper if he wants them when he goes in and they should be able to tell him. He would need to do the same for English Lang total mark and mark per individual exam papers for English Lang and other subjects as well - I'm sure once he gets them you could go in and ask as well. Most don't charge just to send the scripts/the exam papers per subject to you and are happy to just email it for free.

The physical papers aren't in the building but you can get a scan of it sent to you. Which will show comments from examiners etc and marks.

Schools may or may not charge for staff reviewing the paper (looking though/marking as examiners would to see if they think you can go up a few marks to the next grade boundary). In my experience schools don't charge if they recommend it first (if a teacher is shocked at a grade etc) but may if parents really want it remarked - especially if it's all the exam papers for one subject and they disagree. My teachers got my English Lang GCSE remarked as I was one mark off a 9 and they thought I could get it. They didn't charge me - it also looks better for them if it does go up. Some schools I know don't charge FSM/PPG students but charge the rest.

The papers are mostly electronic theses days - if he (not you) asks for access to scripts, they'll be sent as a pdf

I also don't recommend running off straight away, it's good to look (on his own if he wants, they'll be little places to go) and then if he's shocked or his teachers are about any grade - problem solve for it. That normally involves requesting paper, looking through and deciding on whether to do a review/remark or not. They can also look at grade boundaries, talk to staff.

I'm guessing you'll also have to go to the 6th form or college he wants to enroll into - they often do this in late morning/afternoon because if it's a 6th form with GCSEs they'll need to deal with their Y11's first. Check the grades he gets alongside the entry requirements he has for 6th form when he gets back into the car and make sure its all fine or go back and talk to staff.

Whoooo · 09/08/2025 15:39

Afaik the EO and SLT get the grades the day before (20th)
HOYs/HODs/Teachers don't see them until 8am on results day.
But it varies with each school.

Do the total marks on DC’s results paper include any coursework they’ve done? Or is it just the exam paper(s) please?

They should include coursework as it will be total marks so with History A-level total exam marks are 160 but coursework is 40 so the total will be out of 200. On the results paper it will have the subject and exam code (use it if you need help to figure out grade boundaries - especially for subjects like history, english lit etc where there isn't just one set combo of papers). It will then have on the results paper, their grade and total mark including coursework.

Most students know coursework marks ahead of results though - these can change by the exam boards but most stay the same as the mark given by teachers. Most schools tell you the mark they've given you're coursework when they send it off finally with the caveat that jt may change.

NotDonna · 09/08/2025 15:45

@frozendaisy if he does grab the envelope and then run to you in the car. Definitely don’t drive away until you’re both happy. No one will mind you going back in with him if necessary.

MrsHamlet · 09/08/2025 15:46

All schools should have given NEA marks to candidates before they went to the board. That's been the rule for a while.

Whoooo · 09/08/2025 15:47

Re; coursework marks...
Dd was told her media nea, drama nea, art and drama practical marks by her teacher with the proviso that they can change during external moderation.
Dd can't have her art pieces or portfolios back until October

NotDonna · 09/08/2025 15:48

@TheLivelyViper yes, she has her coursework marks already. So she’ll be able to workout the actual exam paper marks in those subjects. Thank you!

frozendaisy · 09/08/2025 16:27

thank you very much

the 6th form he wants is a stand alone 6th form, no year 11s, and we upload his results via his online application and once they have verified the proof (photograph of results sheet I think will do it) his application status changes to enrolled - they said by end of day or latest following day, any issues with grades or changing subjects etc to be done during induction day

ok so will take him for 9.30am that gives us the full hour to check if need be

again thanks a wealth of information that you just don’t get explained

(although results day isn’t being mentioned just yet)

As long as dd2 doesn't keep us waiting outside for nearly an hour like older dd did!!!! 😬

icanbewhatiwant · 09/08/2025 16:58

I’ve been trying to catch up. I’ve not been on for a while. Ds has mostly been in his bedroom since he finished school. We’ve taken him on a couple of trips out. He met up one day with his group of friends, they watched each lord of the rings through the day 🥱

Hes planning on meeting them at school on results day. I booked the day off work to take him. He said I don’t need to wait as he’s going back to a friends house. I told him I am waiting otherwise he’ll make me wait until evening when he’s home to tell me his grades. He still wants mostly all 9’s and says he will get 9’s in the important subjects. So let’s see.

He is ds3 so we’ve been through GCSEs and A levels twice before. We’ve never seen the actual marks etc. just had a grade. So no idea how far off the next grade any of them were.

Ds isn’t 17 until end of March next year, I’ve put him on the waiting list already for the chap who taught my oldest to drive. He said his waiting list is about a year.

Less than 2 weeks to go. Ds is going to 6th form at his secondary school. The place has been accepted already. So nothing much for us to do. He’s still not definite on subjects. He put down physics, chemistry, geography and maths. They drop one subject which wouid be geography, but he’s now thinking further maths instead, which most likely won’t be dropped. He also thought about French A level as he enjoys languages. He doesn’t want my opinion, so I keep quiet!

TeenToTwenties · 09/08/2025 16:59

My DD1 wasn't very good at seeing the big picture. I sent her in with instructions to phone with 'i failed Eng Lang but passed everything else' or similar rather than 'I'm really pleased/disappointed' as that could have meant anything.

It likely would have been on the sheet of paper they got, they just didn't mention it and it definitely would have been on the final results certificate they collect in the autumn as well. Hopefully your DS will be happy. On A-levels, go with what you enjoy and anything you need for a future uni course or career. I think it can be good to also have broad options to keep your future options open on also not feel that everything is very samey across all 4 subjects. Geography and French could work with Maths and Chemistry for example. And shows a student with breath of talent. Also most schools after first few days and weeks are okay with a change.

NotDonna · 09/08/2025 17:08

I’m sooooo pleased DD receives her results online. There’s also an open invite to go into school for both DCs and parents to speak to staff if needed and have celebratory photos. DD will open hers at home and we’ll go in regardless of results. I’m hoping to see some of her teachers to thank them face to face (even if it’s gone a bit wrong; they’ve still worked hard to try get her where she needs to be!) She wants to do the same & say goodbye as she’s not returning for 6th form.

icanbewhatiwant · 09/08/2025 18:09

@TheLivelyViper thanks, it has a number further down the results sheet. Next to each subject, like a than a number. But next to my son’s grade there are no numbers. So I have no idea what they mean. So for example it says a next to a subject with 168 next to the a* this is further down the page after my sons grades, my son got an a in that subject. No other numbers on that line where his grade is. So I don’t understand it.

QueenMabby · 09/08/2025 18:34

I would recommend only requesting papers/reviews of marking if a grade is either way off what was expected or has a negative impact on your DC’s next steps. There has developed a really unfortunate culture of getting reviews of marking to try and squeeze extra marks to get a “better” grade but (imo) all it’s really saying to that child is - your grade could have been better let’s see if we can “fix” it and improve it.

If your dc was predicted an 8 and got a 5 then those papers are probably with seeing. Or if they needed a 5 in maths but got a 4 then definitely- request the scripts.

In 2022 ds got an 8 in biology. He was 1 mark off a 9. But he wasn’t taking it for A-level and didn’t need a 9 to progress to his 6th form
option so I didn’t say anything apart from how proud I was of his excellent grade. It’s already a stressful time for them. They mostly need to hear from us that we’re proud of them and their results are amazing.

Edited for all the typos!
