New thread to help us get through the next week or so!

DS now home, he said history went ok but didn’t feel it was his best. He said that was a big mark question on something like whether government had the biggest influence on health, and mentioned a 6 mark on the Armada I think?

He seemed pretty happy with French. Now onto English and geography for tomorrow!

Those mentioning finishing after tomorrow or after maths next week, do they not still have science papers?

Yep the government impact on health thing was the big 16 marker - I have decided not to press DS on what he answered because it's too late to go back now - i asked about the questions but not what he said! He totally missed out the Pasteur question which is annoying because i know he knows it - but he ran out of time, i think it was only 8 marks

Pancakeflipper · 05/06/2025 17:16

History ( The Lizzies and Cold War) and French today.

Can't figure out how it was. It was a 1 word response when zi asked how it was. The word was "tough".

Not doing any revision for English Language tonight. Says they will re-read about structures tomorrow.

CakeFace1234 · 05/06/2025 17:20

Getting very short answers from DS. He usually does well in mocks for history. Went good (I did correct him to 'well' as he has Eng Lang tomorrow). Said couldn't use any of the revision he did last night as Battle of Hastings didn't come up. Said he is sure he did enough for a 6, then hastily changed it to a 5.

That's history done then. His school books are going in the box.

labradorservant · 05/06/2025 17:30

@CakeFace1234 I’m glad you have the good/well conversations. She’ll say an exam went good. I’ll correct her and then congratulate her.
Now DS is watching Paddington in Peru. Apparently Peru may cone up in geography alevel tomorrow so this is revision!

ThisPerkySloth2 · 05/06/2025 17:37

History - medicine and Elizabethan something or other - was "pretty good". Wrote 4 pages for a 16 marker - seemed pleased with that, I have no idea. Hoping quality as well as quantity!!!!

Same for DD on excel history. It's the first exam she's been really down about. She had Saxons/ Normans and Superpowers. She said none of the 'main' topics came up and the questions were quite niche. She also spent ages writing about the Cuban missile crisis (1962) and the question was 'after 1963' 🤦🏼‍♀️. Poor thing realised too late to change it. She is just grateful that her favourite history exam is yet to come and hoping it's a good one.

DS said history ‘not great’ Edexcel Elizabethan and A West. Said Elizabethan good, A West not good. First time said that. Everything else ok, decent, not sure.

INeverSeeYou · 05/06/2025 18:06

Edexcel Liz and Cold War just ok today. Not as good as P1.

SuperTrooper14 · 05/06/2025 18:40

History went as expected – "not my best" was the verdict. DD said she poured everything into the questions she knew she could answer okay, which was a good strategy. Hopefully she can pull some her mark up on the third paper.

I think that's what DS did too. So fingers crossed

He is currently playing FIFA and had a good couple of hours English revision. He promises to read the cheat sheet before bed and at breakfast so I can't ask any more.

What kind of revision has he been doing for English Lang? Slightly worried that DD hasn't done enough.

Pinkflower100 · 05/06/2025 19:41

English is the weakest subject and he doesn’t know how to revise. We’ve practiced some Q5 plans and he said he just can’t think. Just hoping he can scrape a 4 and never have to think about it again! Not convinced though! Not sure how to help with language revision though.

MrsHamlet · 05/06/2025 19:46

@Pinkflower100 AQA?

Pinkflower100 · 05/06/2025 20:17

MrsHamlet · 05/06/2025 19:46

@Pinkflower100 AQA?

Yes it is.

MrsHamlet · 05/06/2025 20:27

@Pinkflower100

He needs to know:

Q1 - check all the options to make sure he's got the right ones
q2 - it's not a language question. He MUST use comparison words
q3 - is the same as q2 on paper one. "How" just means "what methods does the writer use?" Make sure he's got a few methods up his sleeve to look for
q4 - it's about the writer not the reader. Needs to include methods (see q3) and comparison words.

q5 - stick to the question, only use vocab he knows and can use accurately, spelling is less important than vocab, 3 sides max. Craft it.... don't waffle on.

He had a lesson this afternoon. Then I looked up some resources online, I shared them on the last thread. I will see if I can dig them out.

It's basically ba paragraph structure for each question. Let me have a look

VivaDixie · 05/06/2025 20:29

@SuperTrooper14 here you go, it's a random school I found online

VivaDixie · 05/06/2025 20:30

Even if DD looks at the structure tonight and tomorrow morning it may go in. It's a skeleton to get them started

Thank you. What kind of methods do you mean? I assume he will know but he’s not in the mood to ask right now 😬

Sisublondie · 05/06/2025 20:31

Just got home! Full on panic mode now, as haven’t even been able to read this! How are we all?! 🤯🤷‍♀️🙄🤷‍♀️?!

metaphors
personification

That sort of thing

I bloody LOVE this!!! Thank you!! DS has agreed to read things I send to his phone ( doesn’t want to interact re GCSES at the moment!), so he’s hopefully currently reading this…… 🤞🤞🤞… it’s certainly set it out clear enough for me to understand what he should be doing …🙏🙏🙏

As ever, thank you @MrsHamlet.. he is currently about to try this out …. It so helps to see it bullet pointed 🙏 🌟

MrsHamlet · 05/06/2025 20:57

@Sisublondie my pleasure. I know this one like the back of my hand!

kary42 · 05/06/2025 20:59

I just terrified my Dd telling her she should write 3 sides for q5 and it was worth 40 marks. Turns out that even though they do AQA for every other exam they do Eduquas for English language for some unknown reason and their q5 is completely different.
