Can I ask was this Language or Lit ?

I've asked for DS Eng Lang script back as 1mark off next grade but not received anything yet (as he's not staying at the school he may not be a priority)

It was Language.
His Paper 2 mark was the same. Paper 1 had 12 marks missing

Realistically, when would you expect a teacher to reasonably be able to look at a script? I’m guessing by the end of this week dd should have heard back about whether they think it’s worth a review?

We only started back today. I've looked at 3 today, around the rest of my job!

I’ll certainly ask his teacher
I’ve asked her to review his Literature before sending it off as there are now 3 grades difference between them which whilst not impossible seems unlikely? @MrsHamlet not sure what you think but certainly worth downloading and having a look?

Yes!

Well it's good that the grade has gone up but that's also terrible processing. Congratulations to your DC. 😀
School have looked at DD's English language script and feel that it has been harshly marked and want to submit for a review. So who knows?

MrsHamlet · 02/09/2024 19:44

I've just done some checking and I think that you'll probably have to ask the centre to download the reviewed script and send it to you - it's not sent automatically.

That's if you want to see it.

Sorry - can't remember who I'm suggesting this to now. It's been a long day!!

It’s kind of ridiculous that it’s necessary isn’t it!
I’ll adjust my expectations to hear next week then. What a system!

Well that depends on your definition. None of the 3 will get anywhere so at least I saved their parents £40 each.

"I was x marks off a whatever" doesn't mean the mark was wrong. In these cases, it means they were x marks off a whatever.

mightyducks · 02/09/2024 21:19

DS was 2 marks away from an 8 in FE , I emailed the teacher to ask it was worth reviewing and she’s just replied to say she can request the papers but it will take weeks so I can pay for a review if I want to now , it’s up to me. I expected her to review the papers first or AIBU to expect her to do that?

MrsHamlet · 02/09/2024 21:32

It's not actually her job to review papers - I do it because a) I enjoy it b) I'm an expert so I'm fast and c) I expect to be cut some slack to do it.

I can't, however, see that it will take weeks to get the scripts. In most cases, it's a download.

mightyducks · 02/09/2024 22:32

@mrshamlet thank you , I absolutely understand it is not her job but I did hope she might offer - I think I will gently push back on the ‘weeks’ then , I didn’t really think that could be true looking at the number of posts on here where teachers have already reviewed them and they’ve got their remarks back!

MrsHamlet · 02/09/2024 22:37

It depends on the board - mine are pretty instantly accessible once the formal request is in.

The timescale from request to report is twenty days but it's rarely, if ever, that long.

It sounds like she's not up for doing it, to be honest. A lot of people won't be.

MaryleboneParent · 03/09/2024 00:29

@Panic71 my daughter’s CIE English lang was reviewed and went up 11 marks. She was 4 off a 9 and now is a very strong 9. Wondering how many English papers are wrongly marked. One of her questions went from 6/10 to 9/10. Very glad you also had the scripts reviewed.

felissamy · 03/09/2024 12:58

Can the people whose reviews resulted in no change also report back - because otherwise am feeling like it is a let down not to go for review!

Scattery · 03/09/2024 14:41

Just got DS's two AQA English Language papers back.

I see the marks "high level" interspersed with "low level" and the longer I look, the more baffled I become. I am going to ask politely if one of DS's English teachers will quickly glance over the papers. I worked as a proofreader and am currently an author, so I'm not clueless, but I find the marking scheme esoteric as hell.

If DS stays at a 6 then I'm just going to shrug and let him continue to read the science fiction and fantasy novels he enjoys.

Tiredalwaystired · 03/09/2024 14:42

Why can’t he continue to read them if he gets a seven?

Scattery · 03/09/2024 15:01

I guess that wasn't as clear as I intended. He can read what he likes regardless of grade. It's just that DS and I were hoping for an adjustment upward (he was two points off a 7), because DS quite likes English, has historically done well in it, was a little disappointed by his grade, and is an avid reader (mainly of scifi/fantasy). After seeing the test and how it was graded, I feel more confused and frustrated than I did during his primary SATs and because of that, my instinct is to shrug my shoulders and move on.

@JessyCarr thanks so much for your reply about the Drama grade post. It’s really good to know about extra curricular activities ( due to various reasons we were not able to continue with one )
She is into science and too early to say on any uni choices but, would try oxbridge I would say, nothing to loose. I am glad the super curricular stuff you mentioned are all in her radar and could easily par take in more in next two years ( where as a music/ football lesson starting now wouldn’t reach anywhere good in next two years!) so that’s such a relief.
@Zonder thats what we said when we saw the results, but I guess it’s on the back of her mind and if it matters to any application in the future, we could review it now, before it gets too late.
@Panic71 that’s really good. I remember reading the GCSE thread last year as well and few people posting about review!

Newlease · 03/09/2024 16:39

@Waspie same at DDs school, they are not even talking about review or anything of that sort. I would have thought they would want all the 9s in the world, to stay on their top places or is it just core subjects 9s, who knows

Waspie · 03/09/2024 16:40

My son is on the grade boundary for one GCSE and one mark off the boundary for another but it doesn't matter for his next steps whether his grade is 8 or 9. I would understand getting a review if it were important for next steps but I don't see the point otherwise. Am I missing something?

Waspie · 03/09/2024 16:49

Cross posted @Newlease Smile at least it's not just us.

DS would like copies of his English and history papers (he's doing these for A Level) for interest, not for review. He also wants to know his mark for language as it just says D on his results sheet.

I contacted the exams officer and she said I had to contact the appropriate teacher. But the school have switched off all of the cohorts email addresses so DS no longer has his teachers' contact details. I guess I just have to contact the department heads, as their emails are on the school website, and ask them to forward the requests.

MiniMidiMaxi · 03/09/2024 22:44

We’ve had the scripts for three subjects back where DS was at the boundary - one looks well marked, one looks pretty harsh, and for the other, I’ve already found an incorrectly marked multiple choice question. At DS’s school, any requested scripts are also sent to the heads of department, he returns tomorrow and will just check if they have looked at them or are going to, then I suspect we might submit two papers for review.

DramaLlamaBangBang · 04/09/2024 16:29

Ds is one bloody mark off a 5 in English as well as maths! I'm sending both papers off again. That flipping English grade has caused no end of traumas for the sake of one flipping mark! His teacher has said she thinks there are a few marks in both papers he could get.

Zubomama · 04/09/2024 16:58

Remarks are in for us and DS went up 2 marks in Biology and one in RE, he is now one mark off the next boundary for both so no change in grade... Same happened in music last year. It's like they're doing it on purpose (I know they arent)... Oh well...

MrsHamlet · 04/09/2024 18:23

His teacher has said she thinks there are a few marks in both papers he could get.

That isn't how it works. It needs to be unreasonable marking, not " a few he could get". Some schools are very gung ho with parents' money
