Dd was predicted a 7 and got a 6 in English language. I think it was tough this year.

Would it make any difference to what they do next?

I would. We have one that is 2 away and are asking the school if it’s worth a remark, it’s also one that is irrelevant to dd. But I think it’s worth the teacher looking at the paper

Mummyoflittledragon · 22/08/2024 20:03

We have one which is 2 away also. Idk about English lang as I don’t have details. I wasn’t going to look into it as this is English lit and dd got 7, almost an 8.

AIstolemylunch · 22/08/2024 20:08

Mine did well and got into sixth form but there were a couple of surprises along the way. He got a 5 in Drama, which he wasn't really bothered about but a little surprised, as he had almost full marks in the coursework. When we went to pick up results the school had already checked the paper and they'd missed off an entire 15 mark question!

AIstolemylunch · 22/08/2024 20:09

Also had 1 1 away from a 9 and 1 3 away from a 9 and school advised putting them both in for remark, in case that helps any one.

Zonder · 22/08/2024 20:14

I posted this a couple of days ago but will put it here again now.

This happened for my DC 2 years ago. Got an 8 when a 9 was expected in one subject. We would never have bothered with a re-mark (review) as the 9 wasn't needed but the school contacted us and said they were going for a re-mark if we were happy with that. All good - it was changed to a 9 and we didn't have to pay or organise the re-mark.

Which subject was that? X

Not very. Request the scripts and ask the school to check for any obvious errors.

The school I work at would automatically get it remarked if they are 3 marks or less from the next grade boundary. Speak to your sch exams officer . I would at very likely !

I also wonder how good my Sons teachers were at marking mocks as so many had much lower grades than predictions? They are quite a young staff team

Wow. Your school must have more money than mine!!

Does anyone know how likely it is to find 1 mark on an English paper? DS is one mark off the next grade in both Lit and Lang.

My comment was for this . I work in a school3 or less to the next grade boundary go for review

There are so many dropping several grades for AQA Eng, it feels so wrong. Since 2022 exams the kids have had a pretty raw deal with exams/grading. Its been pretty stressful for them.

DS did Aqa and was expecting 7's for English language and lit but got 5's. Massive shock. He was consistently getting 6's and 7's in mocks and essays. Also a bit pissed off with the school as he requested to be put up to higher in Spanish but they basically gave him the higher paper with no notice then said he wasn't good enough, but he got 90% over all 3 foundation papers so maximum grade 5. It's only because I looked at the maths we looked at all the other grade boundaries. Loads of kids haven't got into his school sixth form when they expected to.

Scattery · 22/08/2024 20:43

DS did well overall and got into his preferred sixth form.

But he also was getting 8-9s on English Lit and Lang mocks and came home with a brace of 6s today. In Lang it's 2 marks off a 7. Not sure whether to get them looked at again. The school will do it if it's within 1-2 marks. This is AQA.

I do wonder if some schools over predict.
My DS got a low 9 in the March English Language mock which was a paper 2 and the previous November mock got a low 6 for the paper 1.
He was predicted a 7 plus on his latest report, today he got a 7 which was what I and he was hoping to get.
In History in his last mock he got 8 overall ( but was very very close to a 9, all 3 papers done in the last mocks ), he was still predicted a 7 but the teacher had said to me at parents evening I am sure he will get higher, today he got a 9.
Other grades were 7,6,5 and 4 with all being either the same as last mocks or a bit higher.

That’s interesting that the school do it if it’s 1 or 2 marks off? Is that across all subjects?

Does anyone know what M means for AQA English? There was no mark equivalent on the results slip however under 'End1' there was an M.

Also, ds was 1 mark off an 8 for history and 3 marks off a 7 for English Lit. Has anyone ever heard of schools getting the papers re-checked or anything like that?

Merit. For the spoken.

Waspie · 22/08/2024 21:23

DS did AQA language and literature. He got the grades he expected based on his mocks.

He didn't get a mark in language, just the letter for the speaking element taken in year 9.

DS said the school actively encouraged him to fill out a form because he was one mark off on his Chem exam. We are hoping they will look at English Lang again due to this. But my source is a harried 16 year old boy so please take it with a grain of salt!

Totallynotpushy · 22/08/2024 21:24

Thank you, do you know why they don't put the mark for English Language?

Just trying to understand the results slip.

There is a score for every other subject. I'm looking at how close ds was to the higher/lower grade out of interest/for A level purposes.

It’s just an admin issue - ask the school as they will be able to tell you x

They can't do anything without his express permission. If he's not done a form for English, they can't do anything.
