I have a lot to say, don't know if anyone remembers the thread. Let me know if you want to hear from me.

22 children a year were killed by TVs and furniture tipping over on them:

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/furniture-tipover-deaths-2000-2019/

Why doesn't mumsnet innumerate mothers come back to me with:

"The US???? I'm NEVER moving there. You think I want my child killed by a Sony big screen falling on him? I'll stay here in the wonderful UK."

Tip-over TVs and furniture have killed 450 children since 2000

With millions expected to watch the Super Bowl on Sunday, safety advocates warn of screens' hidden hazards.

No. Our abortion law deals with non viable babies. Being shot is killing a child that’s living. I want choice for women. I cannot understand why you are in this country @statesmom? You seem a million miles away from our values. Plus unbelievably provocative.

Huh? A VERY viable baby can legally be murdered in this country. Surely you know that?

Oh no, that's horrendous.
Innocent people attending a political rally.

Bringing the thread back to the original subject, at least the OP never had to worry about a school shooting at Westminster.
OP would this have been a worry if your DS had gone to school in the US ?

There is so much innumeracy here, so much groupthink, and in the public generally.

For example, let me ask you a question, and with honor do not google it.

What other living thing do you think kills most human beings?

Do not google it but think about your answer and I will tell you what I think is the right answer.

OP posts:
LeavesOnTrees · 14/07/2024 16:01

I would say more deeply saddened than hysterical.

LeavesOnTrees · 14/07/2024 16:03

The answer without googling is probably bacteria, virus, cell mutation (cancer), so something microscopic.

Sorry perhaps I didn't pose my question quite perfectly.

Most people (which means dumb, unthinking people) would say: sharks, tigers, bears, snakes.

But I do believe the answer is mosquitos, by a mile.

OP posts:

There is a ton, I mean a TON, of groupthink on this thread, no?

Whenever I hear "everyone thinks . . . " I get sceptical.

This, we have taught our son.

OP posts:
LeavesOnTrees · 14/07/2024 16:25

No offence but you seem to be displaying the stereotypical Republican right wing 'groupthink'.

When challenged on gun control you've used abortion and mosquitos to deflect from the issue.

statesmom · 14/07/2024 16:36

And may I say one general thing, cause I'm sort of tiring of this and I don't come here very often:

It is striking to me how insular and closed minded people can be here, and in general.

It has been suggested, MULTIPLE TIMES, that I am a "troll" or this is a "joke thread" because I support Donald Trump, or have a lot of money, or condemn abortion, or (????) think that the US is the envy of the world.

It's like many (most) people here can't even fathom that their precious opinions are wrong or can be challenged.

So closed minded, people.

OP posts:
statesmom · 14/07/2024 16:38

For me? I generally read things I disagree with. I read the Guardian, the NYT, the Atlantic. Those sorts of things.

Why would I sit in an echo chamber reading people's opinions who only comport with mine?

Many people here can't seem to stand, in fact even to believe!!!, that there is someone who completely disagrees with them.

(and it was my driver, and it was Park Lane, no bs)

I surely did not. My husband and I own guns in upstate New York and I talked about it in one post extensively. We have 4 beautiful Kimber match pistols if you want to know, among others.

America is a place that believes in personal freedom and it was founded on many things, one of them protection from tyranny.

Do you believe in the monopolistic violence of the state? Our Founders didn't and this is why our Republic has lasted longer, I believe, than any other on Earth.

This is a clear issue with Americans and it was a clear issue with the Founders. The state is the servant of the people, and not the other way around. This needs to be assured.

In all seriousness, the language used by this supposed "Mom" would suggest that this is actually a male troll. We've had more than one accusation of hysteria and now women on here are apparently "screeching".

Am probably above average intelligence - 1st class degree from LSE, successful career in global company, trilingual, sought after speaker at corporate events around the world.

My views on guns are not unusual. Unfortunately many Americans think they are still living in the Wild West!🤣

You definitely don’t support women and their rights to make decisions over their own body. I’m sorry for young women who aren’t able to leave the US.

I was a "tomboy" growing up, sure.

Your post is a betrayal to the sisterhood.

You bet I don't talk like most women, and people have told me that. SO WHAT?

You are a person who thinks that women should speak and write in a cerain way, and men should do likewise.

You are wrong.

Like at least one other poster, you don't seem to know the difference between fact and opinion.

Fact: 2 + 2 = 5 is wrong (with apologies to Godel)

Opinion: Civilians owning guns is wrong.

Personal freedom to kill each other and freedom from tyranny but impose it on others - native Americans. Then complain about abortions which are clearly a freedom we have. @statesmom You keep the thread going by ridiculous assertions, rudeness and a failure to see other views might be valid. “Yankee go home” was never more apt!

mathanxiety · 14/07/2024 17:34

Oh come off it,@TizerorFizz

You'd think from your comments that the British Empire and all its inglorious history never existed.

They don't have to leave the US.

States have many 'devolved' powers, abortion being one of them. There are many states where abortion remains legal, and in fact, in the wake of the overturning or Roe v Wade, a few states have written the guarantee of access to abortion into their individual constitutions.

Civilians owning guns is wrong - fact!

Civilians own guns (legally) in many countries, including the UK.

One in ten Norwegians owns a gun, for example.

Many people in the US own a gun for duck shooting, deer hunting, etc. It's not all wild eyed hill billies who are determined to stop the gummint from interfering with their liberty who buy guns.
