I have a lot to say, don't know if anyone remembers the thread. Let me know if you want to hear from me.

Again, in retrospect, a boarding school like Eton, Harrow or Winchester would have better suited him and if not those then an Andover, Choate, Exeter et al.

The parents I met at Westminster Great School had 1 thing in common: a dedication to the impotance of education for their child. This was a good thing to share in common.

Other than that, there were as you would expect tons of people from central London with very diverse and international backgrounds. There were very (very) wealthy families, yes, but also families where the husband is a GP and it was a mighty struggle to send their child to Westmisnter.

Then in Sixth Form you get the parents from Hong Kong and so on (there was a chat with all of the China kids on it called "Eastminster" which is kind of funny) and they sort of stuck together the few times they were here.

I'd definitely not send him there again as they are now taking girls in fifth form, and I am really against this. It will change the school inexorably. The Under School is done for.

And of course the biggest question you avoid answering… why were you asking about reading lamps at Eton in 2017? It couldn’t have been idle curiosity given your remarks about the Parents in here having too much time on their hands… was it simply a name change fail? 😂

TizerorFizz · 20/07/2024 12:51

Girls will join in the 5th form? At my old grammar, that was y11. So surely this is wrong?

And that’s a pretty lazy trope about the residency of parents, and definitely not reflective of the situation. Yes some kids move to the school from all countries. Not just the far east. But it would be difficult to imagine a card-carrying Trump supporter imagining how Parents from other countries integrated into school life. Have you got your tiny bandage fixed on your right ear by the way ?

Confusingly 5th form is yr 9 at Westminster (not that the OP would know)

TizerorFizz · 20/07/2024 15:00

Ah. Unusual then. There was lower III and upper III and 4th at DDs prep @DDberzatto I had forgotten that.

Goneblindduetosevereeyeroll · 20/07/2024 15:21

The failure to answer any direct questions about timelines leads me to believe this is all a wind up on the part of the OP.
Maybe she’s imagined the whole thing? Or it’s all been wishful thinking. Or maybe recollections have varied…..

Can you please point me to my post of asking about reading lamps at Eton?!

We were there for 5 years; why would I not be able to comment on other parents integrating?

And this is something not on the internets. You ask any Westminster sixth form student about the kids from the mainland. There is a whatsapp chat called "Eastminster". They are pretty isolated, frankly. Not great for the school in my view and I expressed this to many faculty and administrators.

If your DS was 8 years old 10 years ago which university did he attend to be offered the high flying job at Citibank? He’s clearly not 20 something now.
The fact that it doesn’t add up is calling into question the validity of the rest of your story.

You’d have loved DT’s school - international with dozens of nationalities. For us co-ed was essential - wouldn’t have considered single sex .

Look people: I tried.

I tried to ask you about Westminster when my son was in Year 8, and I thank you for the thoughts.

I tried to offer my help well after he graduated, and I hope I may have been helpful for the few of you.

But I realize that our time here has come to a (temporary?) end, and this thread is now generating more heat than light.

I would hope that thoughtful girls reading this thread would realize that I'm a pretty intelligent woman, independent and not afraid to speak my mind. I hope you have learned from me.

And so I'll end my participation on this thread with a long quote from one of my favorite speeches in American history, Nixon's farewell to the White House Staff.

And he goes like this:

You are here to say goodbye to us, and we don't have a good word for it in English -- the best is au revoir. We'll see you again.

This post @statesmom . This, plus the inconsistency with age and what you’re claiming your son has achieved in 10 years.

I think the wind up merchant has signed off. Baited, got the raise, had a laugh and has gone up in a puff of smoke - back to Kansas , Dorothy - let’s hope so. This might be a magazine article shortly. One of those spoof ones.

  1. because you were never a parent
  2. because such overt xenophobia would have been given the short shrift it deserved by any member of staff

Sadly I think she is for real. And deranged. But hey ho, off to Vanderbilt this summer to wave off the little prince 😂

DDberzatto · 20/07/2024 16:54

If anyone from the UK is wondering why the OP is returning to the US now, it’s because term starts now for freshmen in the US. It is well known that UK students have a greater risk than US students regarding offers. US students just need a letter from their school to say they are still a jolly good egg. UK students need to hit their A level offers and it is considered less likely you’ll be asked to leave campus if you miss your A level grades if you are already enrolled… 😉

Almost certainly very near to Kansas 😉

As my driver was turning off Park Lane this morning, a thought came to me about this funny thread.

All these women who are so aghast that I got a college consultant for my son are total hypocrites.

After all, they are on a thread which talks about one of the greatest benefits one can give one's child: private education.

And then I began to think: did you give your child vitamins? Isn't that a pushy benefit?

Did you read to your child? Get them piano teachers and take them to drama lessons?

WHAT A JOKE PEOPLE!!

We all do whatever we can for our children. Why is the line drawn at college consultants and not, say, soccer camps?

Hypocrites.

Not aghast at all. Just a bit sad for you all that your son needed so much help. It's ok, though, OP. Someone's got to keep those consultants-to-the-terminally-dim in the active economy. Thank you for your service.

TizerorFizz · 20/07/2024 19:39

@DDberzatto Of course the DS might be pleasant. He might buck the trend. What happened about the villa in an Asian country?

Paperclipp · 20/07/2024 19:48

I loved this entire thread...it's been essential poolside reading for the past couple of weeks. Part Columbo & part Jerry Springer.
Aside from all the 'gotcha' stuff I found lots of the info & debate on here fascinating. I've always wondered who about those college consultants & who can afford them.
If you're rolling in money, why not!
Bye @statesmom

Except you might want to hire one that might work…. There is a whole industry set up to take money for old rope. A bit like the ‘super tutor’ who didn’t work either….
