Prom suits - where from?

Just looking at Next and they seem to have a good variety, not too expensive. Where else shall I look? Would TKMaxx have designer/branded suits at a sensible price?

Zara sorted us.

Queenofwistfulthinking · 18/05/2024 13:50

We went to slaters a suit provider.

EasilyDefined · 18/05/2024 13:54

Slaters here too, excellent service but they get very busy at this time of year

Gobimanchurian · 18/05/2024 13:55

www.suitdirect.co.uk/suits/affordable-suits

We got ours from here (shop nearby).

CarpetDiem · 18/05/2024 14:39

We’re planning on going to slaters tomorrow- a few friends have recommended as they do free alterations also.
Are your lads wearing either (smartish/white) trainers or shoes with their suits? My DS doesn’t know and doesn’t want to ask his mates

aintnospringchicken · 18/05/2024 14:42

I've heard Slaters is good for suits. DS and most of his year group wore kilts( In Scotland)

MamasitaGringita · 18/05/2024 15:07

Matalan is pretty reasonable for suits too if you don't want to spend too much.

Walkingqueen · 18/05/2024 15:11

We've ordered ds one from Next. Will update if it's any good.

He wants to wear trainers with it but there doesn't seem to be much discussion between boys about what everyone is doing 🤷‍♀️

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 18/05/2024 15:21

Dh just bought one for ds today. He needs a suit for 6th form next year anyway. They got a really nice one with a waistcoat in TKMaxx. It's not a brand I've ever heard of, but fortunately ds doesn't care about that!

Yes please let me know, and which one you got. There are quite a few on the website but we’ll have to go into store to try on as I’ve no idea what size he’ll need. We’ve got a huge out of town Next with TKMaxx next door so I’m hoping we can get one from either, without having to drag him round the city centre.

Most boys wear trainers or converse these days (teacher who organises school prom here!).

Girls tend to have moved from heels too, a lot more trainers under dresses these days (sensible kids!)

TheFairyCaravan · 18/05/2024 15:41

I got our two’s from Next. They’re both tall, with long arms, so we could get that there. DS1 had a navy one, so it did him a couple of weddings, his army interview, the day he joined the army and many other occasions. I think he passed it on to someone in his regiment who still wears it occasionally, 14yrs on.

jeezlueez · 18/05/2024 20:26

M&S. Good quality, decent price.

Blanketpolicy · 18/05/2024 20:30

Ds got his from either Next or Moss Bros. It was a Moss Bro suit, but might have bought it via next. When he had his first uni ball 2 years later he has grown out of it and we bought another from Moss Bro.

MargaretThursday · 18/05/2024 20:31

We went round the charity shops. He wasn't going to wear it again. He got a nice suit for £20.

Both the girls' got formal dresses for uni from them too.

helleborus · 18/05/2024 20:34

Another vote for M&S. Got a machine washable one that got several uses afterwards for interviews, wedding & funeral.

helleborus · 18/05/2024 20:38

If he's quite slim, you'll find that the smaller sizes are often only available online. If you measure his chest, waist and inside leg that will give you a good starting point.

MzHz · 18/05/2024 20:39

Just hire one! They have really good deals and the service is brilliant!

Yes, this was why we went to Slaters, DS is very slim, as they have a huge selection. The fitter took one look at DS, asked him about colour preference and produced a suit which fitted perfectly and looked great on him, we then chose a shirt and tie and were on our way within about 20 mins. However we went much earlier in the year and it was quiet, we went back this time last year for one for his uni May Ball and it was heaving.

Walkingqueen · 18/05/2024 20:48

How much can you hire a suit for?

onceaday · 18/05/2024 21:09

Try ASOS, we found a great suit from there and loads of size options

Evenstar · 18/05/2024 21:11

We found a suit in a charity shop, I think I paid £15 and then had it cleaned.

Passthecake30 · 21/05/2024 07:13

My ds is 6ft1, long legged and only 8 stone so needs skinny and tall, I’ve found something in river island that works but just waiting for a few more weeks as he keeps growing. We’ve got a wedding to go to next august and it would be great if it could be worn again but I think he’ll outgrow it by the day after tbh.

Definitelyrandom · 21/05/2024 09:21

Both ours got second hand dinner jackets from vintage/charity shops, though that was a few years ago.

ProudTealDog · 28/05/2024 00:38

If you're in Manchester or nearby, I would check out Silk & Sapphire. They have quite a few branded suits at good prices, and I've found that they're much cheaper in-store than on their online website. It's definitely worth a visit! My son got his prom suit there last year, and the service was fantastic.
