I would move it but if she doesn't have the procedure it may affect GCSE grades

dinomirror · 03/05/2024 15:28

And also its very minor , its not a thing she would be in pain for afterwards

God no, this is THE point for little kindnesses and laxities, IMO! They're not stupid, they won't think 'ah, mum's letting me get away with murder, I'll do what I like'. But if it's possible to ease their way through this, then for me it's a no-brainer. So nice food and snacks he wants to eat (my own DS has a worrying tendency to go off food altogether when he's stressed. He doesn't do sports at all and has not got what we could call an 'athletic build' so maybe his metabolism doesn't require constant fuel, but his brain certainly does! A worry). Lifts to 9am exams if possible, rather than rely on the bus which can sometimes run late (and also I imagine it's going to be no place for quiet gathering of resources as the exam stress kicks in). Letting him watch his choice on tv if he's done his day's revision. I've got the odd small treat stashed away (a dice tray for D&D, that sort of thing) to randomly pepper the days with. It's a long, long haul, even with the half term 'break' in the middle, and they need to sustain this push for a lot longer than their mocks ever were.

I agree completely with this.

I plan to take DS to school (usually he cycles) and collect him each day. Feed him meals he enjoys and make his lunches. I'm biting my tongue already about the state of his room!

I will be clearing out my study/office later today so that he can use my big desk to revise for the next weeks. His desk is smaller and in his room, and we've agreed that breaking "revision time" from "down time" is important. No phones rule in my room - study space only. My room is also in the attic so is very quiet and feels separate from the rest of the house.

For those whose children are feeling anxious or nervous I'd suggest the "Headspace" app. DS uses this and recommends it.

JessyCarr · 03/05/2024 16:08

@dinomirror I think that’s got to be a judgment for you and DD in conjunction with the medical/surgical team, rather than any of us on here. Presumably if it could be done under sedation rather than GA they’d already have offered it?

Wehaditsogood · 04/05/2024 18:06

Another mollycoddler here. I drive DS to exams to save his time.
He is now on study leave and asks for one or two elaborately cooked healthy daytime meals every day. He is a sportsman, so his diet is great anyway. But I wish the school sent home some meals for him (obviously joking), I need to work.

A very long shot but does anyone know if there is a pdf file of the oxford aqa revision guide for america 1920-1973? DD has misplaced hers😭😭😭

we’re all WJEC sorry.

Do her friends have a copy that they could send to her?

MrsHamlet · 06/05/2024 10:42

English language is tight for time for everyone. She needs to only write stuff that is gaining marks, and not for example write 8 paragraphs for a 4 mark question.

A minute and a half per mark on the reading section for AQA. When time is up, move on. A HUGE number of candidates miss Q4 and write very little for Q5 because they've spent too long on 1-3.

And don't read the material first. Read the first question, read the specified section, answer...

stillherenow · 06/05/2024 13:49

anyone else having an absolutely awful time
with their dc? Dd is being so awful and just panicking all the time. She’s a high achiever but is just losing the plot and then saying she can’t work. She doesn’t seem to understand that she just needs to calm down and do what she can. I’m tempted to go out and leave her to it nothing I do os
right! Current panic is about history as she’s found some questions on past papers she can’t do , and also the time isn’t enough. I try and reassure her and I’m wrong and I offer to help and see if I can make some new flash cards for her and I’m an idiot and she’s calling me all sorts. It’s driving me mad.
its like being stuck in a particular form of hell!

stillherenow · 06/05/2024 13:54

She’s been talking about trying for Oxford and right now I’m having to keep stum on my view that that would most definitely not be the right uni for her if she’s going to panic like this. Argghhh

My dd's first exam is in Thursday, so as it's her Dads week Witcher I'm driving -0 miles in the opposite direction to collect her, the drive back past my house for another 5 miles to drop her off at school

Muchtoomuchtodo · 06/05/2024 18:39

We’ve been prom suit shopping today, I’m glad to be back to the revision tbh!!

Countrylife2002 · 06/05/2024 20:05

DD has decided to go in tomorrow and Wednesday, she was going to stay home and revise now but feels she needs to see her mates after a long weekend working. First exam Thursday. Yikes.

JessyCarr · 06/05/2024 22:42

We kick off (gently) tomorrow with French speaking, then it’s Drama on Thursday and Biology 1 on Friday. Best of luck to all the DC for the coming week.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 06/05/2024 22:45

Best of all luck everyone Grin

TinfoilTangerine · 06/05/2024 23:02

Drama first written exam for us too on Thursday.

Neveragainisaid · 07/05/2024 07:30

Good luck everyone

gingercat02 · 07/05/2024 08:00

Good luck to all our Y11 crew.
Nothing until Biology on Friday here, but I'm sure the nerves will be high once mine crawls out of bed.

Spacecowboys · 07/05/2024 09:33

Dc is in school until the end of exams. They have a mixture of normal
lessons as per the usual timetable and revision sessions (around the exams). He doesn’t seem to be anxious at all.

WarningOfGails · 07/05/2024 09:34

Same here spacecowboys, DD seems just the same as ever tbh.

I obviously don’t want him to be an anxious mess but he’s a little too laid back. Glad he’s not the only one! Results day I’ll be worse than him I think. I’ve booked annual leave that week so I’m around if needed.

TinfoilTangerine · 07/05/2024 10:01

Yes no nerves here yet - or he is hiding them well. I just hope he doesn't do something stupid like answer too many / few questions, answer on the wrong book/ play/ period in history, or worst fear that he leaves phone / revision notes in blazer or trouser pocket. Anyway good luck to all students and their parents.

omnishambles · 07/05/2024 12:45

Biology and History on Friday so they have to do that controlled time thing in school as they clash.

gingercat02 · 07/05/2024 12:48

@omnishambles that must be board dependant. AQA history 1 is next Wednesday (Biology is Friday)

WarningOfGails · 07/05/2024 13:11

I thought the exams all took place at the same time, regardless of boards!
