Devon grammar places anyone else waiting?

Anyone else waiting to hear? Not long now. I wonder how many they sent the letters out too above the allocated places. Feels like it's been such a long wait. Good luck everyone!

Hopefully any at the girls grammar have the error resolved :)

Just had a phone call from Torbay admissions to confirm her place at TGGS
What a day!

Brilliant news!

Just heard from a friend whose son put Torquay boys as 1st choice, didn't get it, she called up to get some info about the waiting list and just like above they have him on roll to start in September! 😱

movingtodevon1 · 02/03/2024 06:18

I'm just so glad we managed to find out before my Daughter got home from School so I didn't have to tell her that she had no school to go to! In the end instead of that awful evening we envisioned, we had a celebratory chippy tea and massive smiles all round!

movingtodevon1 · 02/03/2024 06:19

Hope
Is it worth phoning the boys Monday to find your place on the waiting list incase the same thing has happened?

movingtodevon1 · 02/03/2024 07:20

It's now obvious why they told you the wait list was inaccurate when you phoned the admissions department! I wonder how many it's affected as thats three we know of now just on this thread and fingers crossed Hope's son may be a forth? 🤞🏽

StrawberryThief1930 · 02/03/2024 08:18

what a mess. so pleased for everyone who has ended up getting a space. definitely worth an extra phone call id say!

I did check and they confirmed he's on the waiting list. Who knows though. Sounds like an almighty mess Confused I'll just see what happens.

I'm new to all this too, we are moving for my husband's job and the area we are from has no Grammar schools.
Lets hope its good news tomorrow although as I applied from a different authority I'm not even sure if I find out from my school portal or not!

Interested in how you applied from outside the area as this is something we might be doing

movingtodevon1 · 01/03/2024 08:44

We didn't get in either 😢 on wait list. Stuffed now as we have no school offererd

That's awful. So if you pass the exam, is the next criterion how close you live?

movingtodevon1 · 02/03/2024 15:54

Replying to sleepy

My husband new job gave us no choice but to move but as we were not in the area in time for the secondary school applications the only choice we had was to try the 11+ and hope for the grammars as they admit from the 11+ results not catchment. Coming from a not grammar area we didn't really know the system or how to prepare so we just brought 2 GL assessment books off Amazon and she read through them before the test! She's a clever girl but we were amazed at the three yes's and very proud that after yesterday's initial panic she got her place at her first choice!

Also when I rang they wouldn't disclose on the phone and only would give out a e mail. Seems to be different dependent on who you talk to. The issue now is my son is excited about being with all his school friends. So if he is offered a place it's going to take a lot of persuasion to go even though it would be a great school for him.... I have also had a friend (girls grammar) have the same thing happen they told me this am but communicated via phone (they rang school Friday). I wonder how many this has happened too.

It's a big mess up thats for sure! Just hope those affected are told soon if they haven't randomly phoned the school about waiting lists!
Does anyone know how we accept the school places, I heard in Torbay we don't have to do anything? Is that correct?

Hopebridge · 04/03/2024 11:02

No you don't do anything. Just wait to hear about induction days etc.

OP posts:
StrawberryThief1930 · 04/03/2024 11:23

you do need to accept your place, not via Torbay Council but via the school direct. The school will email you. Ive received the girls school email this morning. I had to do the same last year with the boys.

Easytigeress84 · 04/03/2024 11:31

We had this two years ago. My daughter is in year 8 now and we subsequently moved to Asia in Aug 23. DD decided she wanted to sit the 11+ last minute. We received two surprise yeses as we only did free tests online a few days before. Then when we made TGGS our first choice, they declined her. We set her up at KEVICC and then we had a call in Dec 22 to say TGGS had a place for her! I heard of about 3 students at our very small primary alone that had the same situation as some of you have experienced (Told no but actually got in).

Does make you wonder...hope the schooling is actually better than their admin 🫣

Hopebridge · 04/03/2024 11:34

KEVICC is a great school. I'm sure any of the errors will be worked out through this week. Or at least by the end of the month (hopefully).

Had an email from the school, and hopefully accepted the place! (I always doubt myself that i have done online things right and have had no conformation of receipt.)

Oh yes, we were very happy with KEVICC, which is why 3mths after we had settled her there, we did not move to TGGS when we were offered the place. And then we got the call to move to Asia anyway so we have had to move again 🫣

Hopebridge · 06/03/2024 11:54

Asia must be an amazing place to live. :)

It is certainly very different! I live by the sea here too in a rural area. I still miss Torbay, believe it or not!

Hopebridge · 15/03/2024 11:43

I'm assuming waitlist will move end of April. My son seems set on the local school now with all his friends. Will cross that bridge if he gets a place.
