At DS school it goes 11-18 and they are thinking of making the 6th form wear suits from other shops as long as they are dark

They already wear different ties

  1. This makes the older boys look alot different
  1. More expense ie you will need to buy a new suit in year 11
  1. Pressure from parents/boys that can afford designer suits

What do you think?

Would you vote YES or NO?

What other reasons for & against can you think of?

TIA

The sixth formers at the dss school wear dark suits, can be expensive, can be from Asda or Tesco. They get a bit of individuality as can choose shirts/ties, I'm surprised at how many of them choose to wear their house/sports ties.

RTKanga
Dd has mentioned Next suits and also Debenhams for when it's her turn.
Ds mentions a trip to New York to shop -
he'll wake up soon!

From Y11 DS gets to wear a suit with the school tie then in Y12/13 he can wear a tie of his own choosing.

I like it. And so, it seems, do the boys.

No uniform for IB students - they wear their own clothes but have to look smart. Boys in trousers and a shirt. No jeans. Smart casual I suppose. They tend to look good.

Sixth formers wore their own choice of suit/jacket and trousers in DS1's sixth form - ie business dress. The parents always complained that suits didn't wear as well as the school jackets (harris tweed) for the lower/middle school and they couldn't buy them second hand from the shop. Most wore fairly cheap suits of the Asda/Tesco/M&S value variety as it was a school with sensible parents!

The private senior school attached to dd's school has siots for 6th formers but it is a set suit from the official outfitter. Grey suit with shirt and different school tie for boys and navy pin stripe skirt and jacket with blouse for girls.

At the state 6th forms where dh works virtually all have either a different uniform or smart business dress for 6th formers. A few have no uniform.

That's what DS1's school does. I can't see any serious problems with the idea, so I'd vote yes.

You'll probably have to buy a new suit at some point round that age anyway. No teenager above compulsory school-leaving age would want to wear school uniform, surely. And they'd probably want to look different and more grown-up. Outside school they have to live with the fact others can afford more expensive clothes. I've done so all my life and it really has never bothered me.
