At your DD/DS senior school....if it goes to 6th form.do they wear the same school uniform as younger ones?

At DS school it goes 11-18 and they are thinking of making the 6th form wear suits from other shops as long as they are dark

They already wear different ties

  1. This makes the older boys look alot different
  1. More expense ie you will need to buy a new suit in year 11
  1. Pressure from parents/boys that can afford designer suits

What do you think?

Would you vote YES or NO?

What other reasons for & against can you think of?

TIA

Suits? Yuk! Round here the sixth formers wear their own clothes - much better to see them all in jeans & jumpers than suits. I think suits make 17 year olds the laughing stock of the village....but that being said I would take advice from your teenagers and follow their lead.

Taweret · 19/03/2008 10:55

I think making Sixth Formers wear school uniforms is really unfair.
Some of the boys look really uncomfortable - 6ft tall and wearing the same as 11 year olds.
I would vote against a uniform entirely.

RTKangaDYSONMummy · 19/03/2008 10:56

It is to make them still smart and sort like the school uniform but different

I went to a comp 11-16 and then to 6th form college at different location so wore whatever I liked

loads of people i know who lived int he SE had to wear suits to ixth form and hated it. Its expensive and not really practical.

id vote entirely against and go with own clothes option but with some limitations, eg no short skirts no revealing clevages etc

RTKangaDYSONMummy · 19/03/2008 10:58

oke doke thanks

My DS is only 12 so it is a long time in future

I think there should be no uniform for 6th formers. That's what happens in dd's school and it seems to work.

PenelopePitstops

It is a boys school so probably that isn't an option that many of them would take up

At my kids school they wear business suits in the 6th Form.

Ds is 16, and they're counting the days until they can wear suits - looking smart for work is cool now!

PenelopePitstops · 19/03/2008 11:04

LOL rtk, x posts!

it is expensive though, having to buy suits they are comfortble in 5 days a week and there will definately be competition, but then again there is this issue with own clothes

mimsum · 19/03/2008 11:11

there'd be just as much pressure to wear expensive clothes if they're not wearing suits so that's not really an issue

at the school my ds goes to they wear dark suits in 6th form - no-one seems to mind - much better than wearing the same as the little ones

let's face it if they're going to be lawyers, doctors, accountants, whatever, they're going to have to get used to it

RTKangaDYSONMummy · 19/03/2008 11:13

ajandjjmum where do they buy them from?

ie are they expensive ones or just normal

At dd's school, as I said, there's no uniform in the 6th form. But their clothes are expected to be "business-like" and dark coloured. They also have to have a skirt and long sleeved shirt ofr formal occasions. And the 6th form tutor has the ultimate veto.

kritur · 19/03/2008 16:12

At the school I teach in it is non unifrom for 6th formers. V.difficult issue as I think it undermines their work ethic, there's no division between school and home. There are also quite a few interesting outfits, particularly in the summer, tiny skirts and cleavage on show. When I was at school we had a dress code in 6th form - boys had to wear school 6th form tie and girls had to wear the school pin badge, then we were allowed clothes in the school colours, red, white, black, grey.

Blandmum · 19/03/2008 16:15

Our sixth formers don't wear uniform. they are expevcted to be 'Office Dress' which is pushed to the limit!

None of the schools in our area expect the sixth form to wear uniform

happystory · 19/03/2008 16:22

At ds's school, (boys till 16, mixed after) all have to wear 'office attire' in the 6th form. It looks really nice and they can have some individuality with ties + tops etc.

Other 6th formers round here (including dd's) wear what they want and frankly they look right rag-bags.

Milliways · 19/03/2008 17:01

At DS's Grammar school, the 6th form can wear any dark business suit, and have a 6th form tie. The rest of the school wear grey suits so they fit in but still very formal.

At DD's school, 6th formers wear whatever they like! She goes in shorts (with tights) a lot! They like the freedom but I have never had so much washing as needs a totally new outfit each day!

Thanks guys

At both my school and DSs' school, the sixth formers wear dark suits.

A suit from M&S is considerably cheaper than school uniform.

I definitely vote yes.

fembear · 19/03/2008 18:21

Our school also goes for business dress. It's not expensive: DD had a skirt suit from M&S for £35 and a skirt and trouser suit from Primark for something ridiculous like £25.
The added bonus is that they now already have an interview suit, which they are comfortable in.

ScienceTeacher · 19/03/2008 18:41

My DS will be getting a suit for his work experience week (it takes place after the GCSEs), then he will be ready for sixth form.

mumeeee · 19/03/2008 22:58

Sixth formers don't wear uniform at DD3's school.
They can wear what they like as long as it looks reasonable.
