Think schools school break up earlier this week and go back on the 3rd. Everyone is on their knees. Madness. DD16 not breaking up till Thursday. 4 days of school in which they will do very little. What do Mums think?

Ours break up on Friday! It's madness.

LenaLamont · 18/12/2023 11:46

They break up on the 22nd here, which is fine. The children are off for two weeks and go back on Monday the 8th.

ElleLeopine · 18/12/2023 11:46

My daughter's school broke up on Friday. I think it's different depending on your area.

She is back in on the 3rd.

Lilacdressinggown · 18/12/2023 11:47

I think the last 4 days could be lovely if the teachers relax and let them do fun stuff.
Otherwise it makes no odds when they break up. They still get the same length of holiday. Those that have broken up will be tired in another term as they will have the longer term then.

horseymum · 18/12/2023 11:52

Break up on Friday, back on the 8th. Kids are fine, it's hard for teachers to get organised themselves.

LetItGoToRuin · 18/12/2023 12:03

I'd also have preferred an earlier finish and an earlier return in the new year, but I don't know why you think they will do very little work this week. My DD is having lessons as normal for at least Monday to Thursday (Friday is a half day for her school.)

PuttingDownRoots · 18/12/2023 12:11

DD has end of term tests this week. Luckily Friday is Inset day. Hopefully the teachers did Twilight instead so they have Friday off!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 18/12/2023 12:14

My son's primary school breaks up at 3:20pm on Friday FFS. I wouldn't have chosen to fly to Ireland on a Saturday two days before Christmas if I had a choice Sad

criminallyvulgar · 18/12/2023 12:17

We broke up on Friday 15th. Back on 2nd. I think breaking up on the 20th and coming back later would have been better.

CMOTDibbler · 18/12/2023 12:36

Break up Friday, back on the 9th. For once, I'm finishing for Christmas before ds

BrieAndChilli · 18/12/2023 12:39

min have an inset day on friday so break up on thursday. This means they dont go back until the 8th Jan!

I would rather have a few more days holiday before xmas too do xmas stuff/shopping/days out etc as by the time new year comes around they have had plenty of time hanging around and nothing really happens in early Jan.

Murpe · 18/12/2023 12:41

I don't get why it has to be a Friday that they break up, when it's making for a somewhat holiday either way (finishing so close to Christmas for some children, and either back early on the 2nd, or not until the 9th). Closing Weds 20th until Thursday 4th would be a good break - when I was at school, we often broke up mid-week.

They break up on the 22nd here, which is fine. The children are off for two weeks and go back on Monday the 8th.

Same as our area in Scotland, It's always like this - break up shortly before Christmas then back a good week after New Year.

I hated when we lived in England and broke up around the 17th and were back on the 3rd of January.

BingoMarieHeeler · 18/12/2023 12:42

Our primary breaks up 20th back on 5th

CatamaranViper · 18/12/2023 12:43

What's wrong with this though?

DS is in yr 2 and his school breaks up on 22nd and is back on 8th. It was more or less the same last year. I just don't see a problem with this...

Suzi7979 · 18/12/2023 12:44

Our break up on Thursday 21st and are back 9th January.

Xmasfairy86 · 18/12/2023 12:56

Ours finished on the 15th. Feels too early!! Now have to entertain them whilst WFH for a week. Wish I had the money to do something festive with them, instead of work 🙄

BendingSpoons · 18/12/2023 13:01

It annoys me they have had an 8 week half term and then will have 5 weeks in Jan/Feb! Mine are both ill, were off last week and could do with a rest now. I guess it will make going back in Jan a bit easier that it won't be so long until the next holiday.

TerroristToddler · 18/12/2023 13:03

DS primary finishes this Thursday and goes back Wed 3rd. So they still get just under 2 weeks off.

I only get the bank holidays over xmas so it makes no odds to me really!

idontlikealdi · 18/12/2023 13:04

Break up tomorrow half day and back on the 3rd. Y8 Dts are tired and grumpy

cheezncrackers · 18/12/2023 13:04

I agree that it's nice to have more time at home before Christmas and allows for Christmas shopping and nice family events. Once new year is over it's just ... nothing! Dreary, cold weather, mud everywhere and nothing much to do apart from traipse around the sales (if that's your thing - it's not mine!)

Almondmum · 18/12/2023 13:05

Meh. It's not exactly madness is it?

If they were breaking up Christmas eve maybe but it's not like kids have tons of prep to do for Christmas is it?

Is everyone really on their knees? Mine break up the same time and nobody seems about to drop. Ready for their holiday for sure they'd have felt the same last week too

Bookworm1111 · 18/12/2023 13:13

Break up Thursday here, back on the 8th. Frankly I'm pleased – less time for them to mess up the house before everyone descends for Christmas!

WantToChangeUsername · 18/12/2023 13:16

Friday last day here and back in the 9th.

TravellingT · 18/12/2023 13:28

DH finishes work tomorrow, DC don't finish until Friday 3pm! We were hoping to have a few days pre-christmas as a family but now will be rushing around to get everything done on Saturday. School is back on the 10th though. Madness
