Anyone else DS sat the tests this term? Any idea when we might know a decision?

Hi, has anyone received an email regarding scholarship?

@villagegirlatheart, was your son in RGS Prep?

yellowrose9 · 14/12/2023 08:11

Hi, are these invites for schloarship only or are they call backs too?

No, he joined from one of the local state schools. He is so happy there and absolutely thriving. 100% right decision for us.

dragonmum19 · 14/12/2023 09:07

Apparently the email for academic scholarships was sent out on Tuesday, but we don't know exact details as we haven't received anything

Positivealwayss · 14/12/2023 19:00

Is there anyone here who has a son at RGS Prep and has been invited for an interview?

Pyrfwondering · 15/12/2023 08:43

@isido13 the straight nos go out at the same time as the straight yeses, yeses after 2nd interviews and scholarship offers. Unfortunately, no early finish to the waiting.

OwlWeiwei · 15/12/2023 08:48

It is such a fabulous school. Both my boys flourished there - came out with friends for life, a wide range of interests and good exam results. And best of all, a quiet confidence and great work hard, play hard ethic.

Good luck to all your sons.

Firstposthere · 15/12/2023 13:13

@OwlWeiwei that is such a lovely comment. RGS does seem to be one of those schools where the boys are always spoken of in such glowing terms.

Wingingit2024 · 15/12/2023 14:07

I am thankful for this feed. My DS has been recalled for an English interview. I have read the blurb from the email we received but I don’t know whether I feel positive or negative about this. (I might be more negative as received a rejection from Hampton earlier and wondering if he’s not at the correct level). Is the second interview just for the waiting list? Or do you think they are being considered? Sorry for the ignorance. I only have 1 child and this isn’t a process I am familiar with.

dragonmum19 · 15/12/2023 16:22

Hello, is Hampton result out? I thought we only know in Jan weather going to next stage?

isido13 · 15/12/2023 16:55

@Wingingit2024 Don't worry at all about the second interview. It means that he is still in the game, it's really positive and to my knowledge there is no such thing as a waiting list for the RGS.
My eldest is currently at RGS and like your DS he didn't get Hampton but was called for a second interview in English. Now he is absolutely thriving at the RGS so don't take the Hampton rejection as an indicator of his level. I believe Hampton is an extremely hard school to get in. Hope this helps, and wishing him the best of luck of his interview.

Thank you so much for your response. That has given me some hope. I read somewhere about the testing going from internal to ISEB and that’s what made me question my sons chances. I am so pleased to hear your son is thriving. We are not very local to the area but have heard wonderful things about RGS.

Slightly late to this thread but seconding what @Wingingit2024 says. I have a DS doing 11+ this year (applying for RGS, Hampton, Halliford) and also have an older DS in Y9 (third year) at Hampton.

As I understand it, Hampton and RGS are very similar academically, both lovely schools giving boys an amazing experience - but Hampton can be much harder to get into because it gets way more applicants. Hampton attracts boys from central and SW London in a way that RGS does not, and this is simply because Hampton is more accessible journey wise to the London market (and offer the extensive coach network). There are boys who will apply to Kings/St Pauls/Westminster/City and have Hampton as their 'back up'. Many of these families wouldn't consider RGS because Guildford would be seen as being too far out.

To put that in context, in the year that my DS2 was going through 11+, there were around 400/450 applicants to the RGS. Hampton had 850+.

So I really wouldn't panic about a Hampton rejection and it certainly doesn't mean that RGS is beyond reach. So much of the 11+ is a numbers game!

Good luck to all of your boys - no email from RGS for my 10yo DS3 so it's either going to be an offer or a straight 'no' for him...the wait goes on!

Anyone know if they interview everyone who applies for a bursary or only those who are going to be offered (have my interview next week)

@BrightonSky Congratulations to your DS. Nice to have good news pre-Xmas, so you can all relax a bit.
I can share experience of 4yrs ago, so not v recent. The scholarship interviews were done in 3s, with the Academic Head ( Admissions)... Dr Hudson has, since, retired, so am not sure who will do the interviews. There weren't many questions - maybe 2 or 3 - to see how the boys thought, how they could express themselves and how they listened to each other.
Good luck!

Congratulations ! Well done to your son @themidimit So relived to hear the good news today. Now on a mission to find a house nearby. What areas are nearby which would be short commute to the school. Any advice would be appreciated.

Wingingit2024 · 09/02/2024 14:51

Congratulations on the offers. We got one too! I was surprised to get one after the Hampton rejection, but thrilled all the same.
I wonder how many sat the exam this year?
🙂

Hi all, I am new to this forum. Just wondering if any of your boys will be travelling from Epsom? If there are any existing parents who are willing to share their experience, I would also appreciate it as we do not know anyone going (and totally was not expecting the positive news). Please do DM me. Thank you
