Has anyone else had a look at the script for AQA English Lit? Very strange result here for one of my DC’s (twins). His score for one paper was 78/80 and for the other paper was 38/80 seems like such a large disparity.

The papers weren't split 80 each it was 64/96.

Thank you, it must have been 78/96 and 38/64 then.

This sounds like a good idea.

We're feeling quite deflated and anxious here. We did a couple of dummy runs to her back up colleges, but without traffic, it was almost 50 minutes, but in traffic it's going to be well over an hour. Maybe an hour and a half. It's a very popular, busy city. I looked into buses and possibly taking her to a bus stop 20 minutes away, which is the nearest one, but apparently it would still take her an hour and 15 to get there on the bus, so that wouldn't make any sense. She absolutely hates the thought of this.

Waiting to hear back from one other Sixth Form, but it's got a bad reputation and they don't offer the main subject that DD would want to take. They do offer re sits though, so we'll see.

Starting to think about A Levels at home again now, but lack of socialisation is such a big negative.

So sorry to hear this, mood in our household has been deflated as well.
My middle son has just finished college and it took him around 50 mins to get there if I dropped him at the bus stop about 10-15 mins away. If I didn’t drop him, he had to leave even earlier as he had to get a second bus. He has ASD but he did get used to the travelling and it wasn’t a problem. Also, I am not sure about your DD but my son only had to go into college for his full time course 3 days a week. I hope that she manages to find something that she feels happy with.

BonjourCrisette · 31/08/2023 22:28

If it helps at all, DD has been doing an hour's commute twice a day every day since she started secondary. I do think it was hard for her to begin with (at 11 she was beyond wiped out at the end of the day) but she has adapted and has friends she travels with and it has been fine. She sees it as social time at the start and end of her day. She also did things like homework that was reading on the train from time to time or just took it as time out and listened to music or a podcast.

SummerCycling322 · 01/09/2023 06:54

Once grade reviews are out of the way is there anywhere to see results at school level? I’d really like to see my DDs school as it’s a large non-selective comp but has had serious management issues over the last few years. The school never tell us just fudge some PR, but other places seem to. DD will be travelling an hour each way now to go to an alternate college as are most of her friends all desperate to leave.

SummerCycling322 · 01/09/2023 08:58

Thanks @Takoneko id forgotten to look there. Makes for interestingly sad reading that the school DD has just left has significant minus progress 8 score and only 38% pass G5+ in maths & English no wonder the head has been asked to leave after 5yrs of failing to turn it around! It’s not a “deprived” area either just no other options unless you can afford £20k + a year in private fees.

Count me in for the new thread - you guys have been lifesavers.

DS did a dummy run of his trip to college this morning. Got himself up and ready by 6.30, which is unprecedented. Short cycle, two trains and another short cycle, and he was there with over 20 minutes to spare (assuming a 9am start, which is what Monday will be). He'll be travelling against the main commuter flow, as he's going to a campus at the airport, well outside the city, so hopefully it will still be as easy next week. The college runs a bus as well but the stops are tricky for us and he gets bus-sick so he's happier on the train. He's shattered now, though, and feeling sick, which is a worry, but hopefully that's just nerves and he'll be OK once he gets into his stride. We have anti-nausea meds he can take initially though.

Wow two bike rides and two trains each way? That's dedication.

The bike rides are only about 5 minutes each, and it's such an opportunity - he's going here to do physics and aeronautical engineering, and their canteen is an old 727 fuselage. He's hoping to do either pilot training or motorsport engineering eventually, and having this within range is too good an opportunity to miss,

That looks awesome! You’re so lucky having this quite close to you.

Good luck to your DS, I hope he does well and manages his journey next week without any hitches.

It's based at Cardiff Airport and is part of Cardiff and Vale college.

So despite us not requesting the papers or any remarks etc I have had an email today that the school took it upon themselves to send DSs English Lit paper for a remark and now he has a 5 instead of a 4. We were happy with the 4 as he was expected a 2 or 3 so that was a nice little suprise.

spiderlight · 06/09/2023 15:05

That's brilliant news, but also a high risk strategy from the school to not ask permission first. I thought that was mandatory?

That's great news but as PP said, very risky. What would have happened if the grade had gone down instead of up?

MrsHamlet · 06/09/2023 17:56

@SirSidneyRuffDiamond it's centre malpractice not to seek written consent from the candidate!

That's what I thought. DS had one paper reviewed on the advice of both his teacher and the subject lead. He had to fill in a form giving consent, agreeing to pay the fee and acknowledging that he understood that his grade could go up, down or stay the same. It was entirely his decision and the matter was discussed with me directly either.

Another one shocked by this.
Imagine it had gone down - the school would be surely liable.

My DS is having a remark, he had to fill out a consent form, sign it, then I emailed it to school. He was only one mark off the next grade, but I still did a quick check of how many marks he needed to lose to go down. Quite a few, as it happened.
Although this worked out well, I would want to take this up with the school in case it backfired in the future.

That's a good point I didnt think of that. The email I received today just said

X's English Literature paper was returned to AQA for a re-mark.
This has been returned to the Academy and I am pleased to inform you that X"s Literature grade has been moved from a 4 to a 5.

I will have to ask him if he signed anything on results day but he didn't mention anything on the day.
