Are you accompanying your DC to collect GCSE results?

Just that really, we live very close to school, Ds has to collect in person, he was just going to walk in on his own, but then I thought will other parents go along for moral support 🤔Ds has said he doesn't mind either way.

We were away when my older Dd got her results by email, so don't know the norm for collecting in person.

I went with both of mine. Most parents did. There for moral support and decisions if needed (if enrolling in Sixth Form there). Stand back and watch the joy if not.

GoodnightJude1 · 24/08/2023 06:48

@PandaGrump

oh please don’t do that 😫

These are HER results and you should let her share them with you when she’s ready. You’ll really spoil her moment if she’s done brilliantly and comes dashing out to tell you and you already know.

TheaBrandt · 24/08/2023 06:55

There’s something really wrong with doing that.

I know “back in our day” parents were less involved but believe me if you insisted on doing that now your child would be one of the only ones on their own - university open days are a good example just been on those everyone had a parent there I remember going on my own.

Shannaratiger · 24/08/2023 07:01

I was wondering the same thing. We're driving him in so I'll probably walk down with him and see what other parents are doing.

Sounds unlikely.

What have school said? Don't you get communication from them?

My son also says his are emailed out!

Pollyanna8844 · 24/08/2023 07:30

I am having to collect DS's results and send him a photo as he is on a music course - yikes!

TopReview · 24/08/2023 07:42

My kids’ school email them. Good luck all!

WombatChocolate · 24/08/2023 07:51

One thing, sometimes they just miss a grade…but will only know that if they find out the grade boundaries. If this is the case, talking to teachers about which paper did better/worse/unexpected for a review of marks (remark) can be useful the parents pay and sin to say they will.
Having a parent at least in the car to call on can be useful for this stuff. In some schools, if you don’t do it today it will be Sept before you can get the relevant info. Just saying…..parents can be useful.

Can also be useful if results disappointing and some re-jigging of 6th form options needed. Esp if a child is upset, a clear head to help them work through it or advocate for them can help.

Parapapampam · 24/08/2023 07:57

Well, he's just left to walk in, he was sure he wanted to go alone, and it's only 5 minutes away so he knows we're not far away if he needs us. Good luck everyone 🤞

An hour to go before he can get them here. Alarm has just gone off and I've given him the knock on the door he wanted.

Guess he's messaging his mates, organising the meet up.

I wish we were taking him in, but that's not our decision.

Ours is from 9am as well. DD in the shower and then I will take her! All the best to your Ds

Thank you and to your DD too.

Reminds me of last year when waiting to see if the eldest got into University.

Parapapampam · 24/08/2023 08:28

He's got them and is now walking back home, hasn't told us yet, but messaged they're not what he expected, but are ok. Apparently worse than expected in some, better in others, so guess I'll see in a couple of minutes 😬

Ds is just doing his paper round then we're off to collect, hope he gets what he needs for college, fingers crossed 🤞🏻

BunnyNumNum · 24/08/2023 08:38

We can collect ours from 9am. DD wants to go in a bit later and is still asleep! Talk about prolonged agony!

HelpMeGetThrough · 24/08/2023 08:50

And he's gone!!! 😳

Parapapampam · 24/08/2023 08:59

He's back home, definitely not as good as predicted, so he looks a little dis-heartened, but hopefully enough to do the A'Levels he wants, have emailed the sixth form as he got a 4 in one of his intended subjects, he was predicted a 9 🤔, he's hoping he can still take it.

You’re doing what?!

WTF

Oh honestly. It’s literally on the parent portal for parents. I asked her in the end and she was happy for me to download while she went in

shams05 · 24/08/2023 12:21

I took him in the car and waited outside whilst he went in with friends. He's in year 10 so only two results. 7 in both subjects, he was predicted a 6&8 so it's sort of averaged out.

Tweezeme1 · 24/08/2023 12:40

No parents at Dds school she said.
she went alone to school with best friend I was in office for morning but I was emailed them anyway
she said it was just all friends and groups but no parents

HelpMeGetThrough · 24/08/2023 14:16

He made us wait for the results, came in and said he needed to get changed as he was too hot!!!

He got everything he needed for his college course, so all happy here.

CarPour · 24/08/2023 14:27

I can't believe parents go in for GCSE results?

I don't even think my mum walked in with me. I remember she went for a casual walk in the vicinity of the school for my A levels, but that was more in case something had gone wrong.

blimmy · 24/08/2023 14:28

Including today I've now had 3 kids collect GCSE results (2 of whom have also collected A level results) and I've never once seen a parent go into the school. Lots wait outside, either on foot or in cars, but nobody goes in. I'm fairly sure it was the same when I got my own results too, way back in the mists of time!

PuppyMonkey · 24/08/2023 14:32

Our school must be weird then because I went in with DD as requested and loads of other parents were there too. It was lovely!
