Are you accompanying your DC to collect GCSE results?

Just that really, we live very close to school, Ds has to collect in person, he was just going to walk in on his own, but then I thought will other parents go along for moral support 🤔Ds has said he doesn't mind either way.

We were away when my older Dd got her results by email, so don't know the norm for collecting in person.

@RhubarbBikini hopefully that's because he's done great and so they can get the photos taken before teachers get really busy!
Ds1 was told similar at A levels but although he went in he declined the photo opportunity, he's always been one to shy away from attention. He sort of made his excuses and slunk away!

Hmmph · 23/08/2023 22:00

Sounds like good news if picked to go in early. Which makes me ask - do schools see results early? How early?

TreeHuggerMum1 · 23/08/2023 22:01

My DS absolutely does not want me there!

BlockedAndReported · 23/08/2023 22:02

I heard SLT see them the day before. Hopefully that means your DC has done really well then @RhubarbBikini

shams05 · 23/08/2023 22:03

Schools definitely see them early because by the time the kids go in they've already compiled their tables showing the statistics of how each subject did this year in comparison to other years. I'm not sure how early

Mouseylu · 23/08/2023 22:06

Schools (head and exams office) received results today under embargo til tomorrow.

Exam boards sent the results (electronically) to schools today. Only the Exam Team and SLT will have seen them. This is because the results slips or emails or webpages or whatever are produced by the schools, rather than directly by the exam boards. That way students have one sheet, which is clearer than multiple ones in different formats. The school will need some time to prepare and check these. We had printer woes before A-level results day due to an IT update!

shams05 · 23/08/2023 22:09

Ash yes that makes sense. Thanks!

Judellie · 23/08/2023 22:11

I wasn't going to but she met her friends on Sunday and they're all taking a parent with them. so now I am.
I was giving her a lift there anyway.

BooksAndHooks · 23/08/2023 22:12

Last year parents definitely went in. One of DS friends was a bit upset as he was the only one from their group who didn’t have anyone with him.

IhaveanewTVnow · 23/08/2023 22:14

I waited in the car. No way would I have gone in the hall! I do try not to be a helicopter parent.

SirVixofVixHall · 23/08/2023 22:14

My dd has a nasty bug and won’t be able to go in, even if feeling better as she could still be contagious, she is v upset.

Crossstich · 23/08/2023 22:16

My children went with their friends
I don't think any parents went.

PhotoDad · 23/08/2023 22:17

We're hundreds of miles away from DS's school at a training session for his sport! Hope the WiFi doesn't let us down tomorrow morning.

Qilin · 23/08/2023 22:19

I went in the car with dd. She went in and got her envelope but decided not to open it in school. She came back to the car and opened it. Was really happy and emotional and then went back into school to see friends.

I left the decision to dd.

Qilin · 23/08/2023 22:20

At DD's most parents were around, or in the vicinity. But it had pupils spanning a large area so many needed lifts anyway.

Qilin · 23/08/2023 22:21

RuthW · 23/08/2023 20:32

Never heard of parents going before. It's something they do independently

Depends on the school. Definitely not the case at several schools locally, for GCSEs and A levels.
Parents are often driving and either wait in the car or go in. Seems to be a mix of that, but most are nearby/in the vicinity incase needed.

MrsAvocet · 23/08/2023 22:24

School is 20 miles away for us so no real option other than for a parent to drive in but we have always waited in the car. I didn't see many parents actually go into school on any of my DC's results days.

SoupDragon · 23/08/2023 22:24

I went with all 3 of mine and waited in the car. I thought it was important in case they'd completely messed them up which would have had implications on their acceptance into 6th form.

There are always parents there.

Apologies because a bit unrelated but does anyone know why the results are so late? I mean they start back school almost a week later, it didn't seems that late 2 years ago. DD got her A-level last week and I am quite annoyed that we now have barely 3 weeks to organise everything.
I think it is quite disgusting to make them all wait so long. DD was a bit confident but we still had a few meltdowns before results day, so the more anxious kids must really suffer. In my country they don't wait quite as much as that.

It's usually this same week for GCSEs.
It changed during covid to be the same week as A levels - A levels on the Tuesday, GCSEs on the Thursday.
But now back to normal.

jmh740 · 23/08/2023 22:30

Dd has asked me to drive her down to school, she is planning to meet her friends there then all walk back to one friends house and all 8 of them open results together, trying really hard not to be sad she doesn't want me to go with her and hope I don't have to wait for too long for her to tell me her results, she then has an appointment at 2 pm to enrol at college 15 miles away so mum's taxi will be needed again!

Thanks. I'm hoping so, but obviously can't say that to DS incase I've got it wrong.

We had a close family bereavement in May. I was so proud that DS was able to even get out of bed to sit exams, let alone put in hard study. He really wants to study medicine, so I'm really hoping the results are good enough for the a-levels he's applied for

PuppyMonkey · 23/08/2023 22:35

I’ve said I’ll drive DD to school and was fully expecting to wait for her in the car but she’s said tonight that she’s expecting me to go in with her. Now I’ve read this thread and am all confused again.Grin

CalmaLlamaDown · 23/08/2023 22:45

I’d love to go but I’m working!
DS school is pick up in person between 9.30 and 11.00.
After 11am, the results are emailed out. He had better not keep me waiting until 11.

Digimoor · 23/08/2023 22:48

No, school are emailing. Said noone is welcome in person
