Are you accompanying your DC to collect GCSE results?

Just that really, we live very close to school, Ds has to collect in person, he was just going to walk in on his own, but then I thought will other parents go along for moral support 🤔Ds has said he doesn't mind either way.

We were away when my older Dd got her results by email, so don't know the norm for collecting in person.

Yes. All the parents go and there is breakfast provided

megletthesecond · 23/08/2023 20:49

No. It's a short walk and DS is meeting his mates.
I'm working round the corner if there's a crisis and he needs me.

chutneypig · 23/08/2023 20:49

I realised I didn't answer your question. I'll be going in with DS. My husband is going to wait outside DD's school. We'll all meet up afterwards.

pintery · 23/08/2023 20:50

I drove DD to school (too lazy to walk Hmm) but waited in the car while she went in.

UndercoverCop · 23/08/2023 20:51

A long time ago but my mum remembers parents gathered outside while we went in to get results, we came out told them and all went off together while parents went home!

MargaretThursday · 23/08/2023 20:52

@Parapapampam
I've told ds that I will be waiting by the exit and if I haven't been told by the time he comes out then I might shout "I am so proud of you my baby boy!" and fling my arms round him.

He'll tell me with that threat hanging over him. 🤣

MimsyBorogroves · 23/08/2023 20:55

Yes, many schools still email out as well as offering results to be collected in person. This helps students who are away, who will be too anxious to attend, or who have any other reason not to attend in person.

Lots of parents drop off and wait. There are always a handful in our school who come into the hall with their children. There seem to be more parents who do this for A Level results, though.

itsmyp4rty · 23/08/2023 20:59

We went last year and there were lots of parents there.

elliejjtiny · 23/08/2023 21:00

Parents aren't allowed in at my dc school because they don't want parents getting in the way of photos. My dc2 is one of the select few year 10's who did one GCSE a year early. You would think the school would want them to come in and be photographed together but the year 10 group aren't allowed in either and they have to wait for an email after the year 11's have got theirs.

WithOneLook · 23/08/2023 21:05

In all the schools I've taught in the majority of parents have waited outside in the car park and it's a mix as to if the student opens the results in the hall or off with a parent and then back to share results with friends.

Personally I think it's a really good idea for a parent to be there in case the student needs some advice on their results. Often the student is too emotional (regardless of if things have gone well or badly). Having a parent there means they often ask the questions they need to know/take on board the information that I am giving them as to next recommended steps and then support the student in acting on them as appropriate. Where a suitable adult isnt available, I find those students are more likely to work themselves up into a state over the next 2 weeks that they can't contact me for advice.

My son says they are emailed out?

Why are you asking us? We don't know what your school does.

Fordian · 23/08/2023 21:07

V unconfident DS walked in alone as I waited by the car. I'd arranged to catch up with mum friends afterwards, without the boys.

He opened them in front of me. They were very good. Not stellar, but very solid.

We both laughed about his 8 in English lang and both concluded they must've marked someone else's paper by mistake!

He retrospectively regretted not getting the back slapping by the others had he opened them with them, but hey.

YnyshirGal · 23/08/2023 21:09

Yes we are going in, but the school encourage it and provide refreshments. For us, the results are emailed at 8am (so we will all be huddled round the laptop as a family!) then the school is open all morning to collect hard copies (these are often required for other Sixth Forms) and for pupils and parents to discuss results with teachers if needed. Those staying on for the school Sixth Form can also enrol on the day.

I am as DD wants me to. Quite surprised as she's usually really independent!

Same has my DD quite independent but she wants me to go with her and I’m really happy.

Parapapampam · 23/08/2023 20:28

Bit of a mix then, Ds is planning on finding out what time his friends are heading in, so think I will leave him to it, with strict instructions to let me know ASAP, I can see him heading off into town after forgetting to let me know 😂

You need to make sure he keeps the results paper safe, he'll need to show it until he gets the actual certificates.

Why are you asking us? We don't know what your school does.

The entire thread is premised on a poster asking what parents in other schools are doing FFS.

I have subsequently asked my son to check his email and it clearly states that results will be emailed at 8.01 and that students can attend from 9am if they want to print them off.

Hanones · 23/08/2023 21:30

So you know then. So why are you asking?

Sausagesandpeas · 23/08/2023 21:30

I’ll be there. School actively encourages parents to go in.

Fluffypiki · 23/08/2023 21:40

Apologies because a bit unrelated but does anyone know why the results are so late? I mean they start back school almost a week later, it didn't seems that late 2 years ago. DD got her A-level last week and I am quite annoyed that we now have barely 3 weeks to organise everything.
I think it is quite disgusting to make them all wait so long. DD was a bit confident but we still had a few meltdowns before results day, so the more anxious kids must really suffer. In my country they don't wait quite as much as that.

BlockedAndReported · 23/08/2023 21:40

Not only am I going in with DD, but DH is too. Massive PFB vibes 👌

Autieangel · 23/08/2023 21:50

Went along but waited outside

RhubarbBikini · 23/08/2023 21:53

I need to fairly close by, because my DC will either be going to sixth form the other side of town, or if they've missed the grades we're going to have to drive to the next town to beg for a place at the local college. I'm hoping to fade away if the sixth form place is secured and let them get on with it.

Just to add to the anxiety this evening, we had an email from school late this afternoon saying my DC has been invited by SLT, along with a small group of other students to go in early to collect their results before the rest of the year group.

Oh my, that would totally freak me out 😱Do you have any idea why?

shams05 · 23/08/2023 21:57

Eldest ds went in on his own during COVID, youngest is in yr 10 and they all do 2 early entry GCSEs, they've been told to come in at 11, so as to give the first few hours to the yr 11s to get theirs first and any pictures that need to be taken.
The Bolton news always have a reporter on sight to photo the highest achievers.
I'll wait in the carpark as that's what ds wants. If there's any concerns we are allowed to go in and speak to teachers but hopefully there won't be.
I know some parents do go in but most of the boys like to go in with their friends. It's an all boys school.

Could be for a press story if DC has a particularly interesting backstory, has top grades or tbh looks “diverse” 🤷‍♀️
