I’m so nervous….but I’ve told my DS I will be proud of him whatever he gets. He has worked so hard. 😬😬💪🌟🤞🤞🙏

We get history on Weds and add maths on Thursday this week. I'd put GCSEs out of my mind but not long now. Mercifully less stressful than last year when it was A levels and uni places.

Same here. Both Englishes on Wednesday too.

TicTac80 · 15/08/2023 08:48

Does anyone mind if I join this thread? DS gets his results next week. He hasn’t looked at a Plan B. We are away on holiday, but are close enough to drive back for results day. Planning on doing that and then heading back out for last couple of days of holiday. I’m so nervous but I’m hiding it from DS.

grass321 · 15/08/2023 09:31

Wow how many are in the year?!!

Around 180 I think.

Around 30 pupils get all 9s at our school. It makes everyone work hard because their peer group is. But they feel a sense of disappointment and for some, failure, if they get anything below a 9.

During the years of CAGs/TAGs, the number of students getting all 9s went up by a factor of around 8.

PhotoDad · 15/08/2023 09:52

Sorry, typo. Factor of about 4! Should check before pressing Post.

poorbutgood · 15/08/2023 11:49

Anyone else have an increasingly anxious teen?
DS has been so laid back about it, but is now panicking a bit, hence grumpy and
Moody. But won't discuss a plan b (as we are pretty confident)

It's going to be a long 9 days

closethedrawer · 15/08/2023 11:55

DS confessed last night that he's worried about failing English Language. It's his weakest subject and although he tried his best there is a good chance he'll only get a 3.

We've been reassuring him that it's not the end of the world and there are lots of options if he does get a 3.

To be fair, he's no clue what he wants to do anyway, he's signed up to college but has no desire to go. I just know that he really doesn't want to have to do English language ever again!

Yes, mine is after being very sanguine about the whole thing for months! He's not moody but definitely showing nerves. Also no plan B. It is what it is, whatever happens, we'll deal with it.

LighthouseCat · 15/08/2023 12:37

We're all feeling quite nervous (got two getting results). DD1 super capable and seemed to breeze through but is now wondering why she didn't work harder in terms of revision and is just remembering all the things she now thinks she got wrong. DD2 was also pretty confident at the time and did revise quite hard but she's had a horrible exam result experience in the past so she's always very anxious when waiting for important results. Trying to keep busy with nice activities.

PhotoDad · 15/08/2023 12:38

DS currently staying in a static caravan with a friend's family. He's much more laid back about it than I am!

blimey what kind of school is this? My kids went to a leafy comp and in the first year to do all number grades, DD's very smart and lovely friend got 9999999888 from memory. In DS2's year his super clever mathsy mate got a 6 in something (DS told me as he got a 7 in it lol).

The super fancy very very naice comp near me usually has one or two getting all 9s.

How sad if anyone feels a failure not to get all 9s. DS2 called me on GCSE morning "mum I smashed it" but I better not tell MN what he was so pleased with Grin we were very pleased too btw.

roadsidetree · 15/08/2023 15:01

DS is stoic and gets on with the day.

We are nervously waiting for the results as he needs grade 7 in the subjects he is keen to study further and there is no plan B yet.

Postapocalypticcowgirl · 15/08/2023 15:24

clary · 14/08/2023 19:46

Yes in DS2's year (2019 so last normal year as it were) 837 students who took 7 or more GCSEs got a 9 in all of them. I mean that's nothing. I've had a much higher figure quoted at me on a MN thread, but that relates to Covid years when it is likely to have been higher. 837 people is nothing! And yet I see ppl on MN saying oh no, my child got a couple of 7s in there, so terrible! <sigh>

What you need is great - anything else is just icing on the cake. And vanishingly few students will even need all 7 and above tbh.

I'd argue nobody needs all sevens. I know some vet med courses (for example) want a high number of sevens, but I don't know of anywhere that would (officially) turn you away because of, for example, a grade 5 in art!

And that's at the very high end of competitive uni courses to get into!

Postapocalypticcowgirl · 15/08/2023 15:26

Anyway, best of luck to all DC on this thread, and I know for some of them, grade 4s/5s will be massive achievements- don't let anyone talk that down to them!

clary · 15/08/2023 15:28

@Postapocalypticcowgirl well quite. Yes even vet med and the like ask for a majority of 7 and above don't they?

For most students, even at higher ranking unis, a grade 6 in maths and English will be more than fine. And for the rest the kyey thing is a good grade in your A level choices, if relevant.

PhotoDad · 15/08/2023 15:29

Amen to that, @Postapocalypticcowgirl, may everyone get what they need!

I don't know of anywhere that would (officially) turn you away because of, for example, a grade 5 in art! I was going to say that some art-schools might raise an eyebrow, but that's not actually true. 😀

Changes17 · 15/08/2023 16:39

DS just back from his first festival with friends rather than family. Needs to do his transition work in the coming week, before GCSE results, as we're going on holiday on August 26. Very much hoping he'll get his grades, or he might need to stay home and do an aptitude test. (Clearly I didn't think it through...)

Hellocatshome · 15/08/2023 17:33

DS is too busy worrying about his medical tomorrow for his apprenticeship to worry about the GCSEs yet. He had to fill in a questionnaire before the medical and has now convinced himself the medication he is on for his acne will be a problem. I have told him it absolutely won't be but of course as I am his mum I dont know anything about anything.

Now that we are back from a 2 week holiday and DD back from GB Training camps she is actually being a bit productive. She has decided she might want to ditch one of her A level choices so has been reading alternative syllabuses and seeing if the blocks all fit together (she was interested in law A level but it sits in the same block as PE which is a non negotiable so had to be disregarded) and now has a ranking so she can slot in the one she wants on results day. In tandem to this she has been looking at University courses and seeing if her A level choices are acceptable. She is also currently getting on with some of the summer work she has been set by her chosen 6th form. Can't quite belive results are next week - its gone by so quickly.

SheilaFentiman · 15/08/2023 17:55

DS1 has been a grumpy git today.

Neversaygoodbye · 15/08/2023 18:25

I have started "reminding" my DS he has several pieces of work set for his i tended 6th form college, he keeps on insisting it's weeks way. I feel a typical last minute effort coming on.

Rowgtfc72 · 15/08/2023 18:44

Dd is now on countdown for results and very nervous.
I think she's just realised her next few years are dependent on these grades.

mumonthehill · 15/08/2023 19:22

Ds brother is coming home next week to be with him, i thought it would be a positive but apparently just an added stress!! He has calmed down since to see what a nice thing it is but I think the reality of it all hit home. Elder dc did very well at GCSE so I should have seen it might be a but much.
