These are the voyages of the GCSE Enterprise. To support our DCs, bemoan exam boards and to boldly go through the last fortnight like no one has gone before!

Oops he also had a normal tie GrinGrinGrinGrin

Hellocatshome · 26/06/2023 22:10

Yes I would say normal tie. Bow tie only really necessary for a tux. Most take them off after the photos anyway.

PicnicBunny · 27/06/2023 07:08

NCTDN · 26/06/2023 22:08

Ds has a normal toe.

I do like a normal toe 🙌

PicnicBunny · 27/06/2023 07:49

Thank you @NCTDN gives me less anxiety now NOT getting a bow tie … I have DH’s I could actually put in his pocket incase …

NCTDN · 27/06/2023 08:04

Haha @PicnicBunny getting DS to wear any tie is a challenge. A bow tie would have been an outright no.
And as for one with a pattern - No chance!

grass321 · 27/06/2023 08:10

I have abnormally long toes. They're like a second set of fingers. A friend once told me he fancied me until he saw my toes.

Sadly my children have inherited my toes and their father's lack of height.

PicnicBunny · 27/06/2023 10:17

If he wasn’t a slim fit he could have worn his dad’s! I’m not spending money on a whole suit he’ll never wear again. When will he wear a tux and bow tie again? 🤷🏻‍♀️

PicnicBunny · 27/06/2023 10:25

Prom on Friday. Welcome day at sixth form on Thursday. He is okay with both looking, forward to it. His friends looking forward to it. But I have massive anxiety from my own experience I think

NCTDN · 27/06/2023 10:42

My theory is that we've got a designer suit at a bargain price so if he grows out of it or never looks like he'll wear it again, we can sell it for someone's prom the following year.

PhotoDad · 27/06/2023 11:08

No prom at DS's school (it has a sixth form so they celebrate then, instead). He and three friends took themselves off on a day trip by train to mooch around a city a couple of hours away, and had an absolute blast. Now he's rehearsing for a school concert on Friday, and then he can finally relax.

TripleDaisySummer · 27/06/2023 11:21

DS got a suit for prom - he may need one in the future - it was in sale so as suits go okay. Photos from previous proms they have up round school do seem to show boys is suits. I got him a black tie its a coloured suit and shirt so seemed safest.

The end celebration assembly was meh - it was chaos with hoodies and no information about certificates pick up which always seems to be late in January and ex pupils are just supposed to know date.

The college induction day was poorly attended though DS enjoyed it - I'm not that surprised as DD1 was after exam results so weren't expecting one now and if we hadn't got DD2 still at school we'd have probably booked a holiday for now plus a few have just started new jobs as well so getting time off I supposed could be difficult.

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 27/06/2023 11:22

DS's prom was black tie (ie dinner suits). I picked up a barely worn designer dinner suit in a local charity shop marked at £10, but on 50% off day! Got a Marcella shirt new with tags on Vinted for £9. Vintage silk bow tie £4 Vinted. Paul Smith dress shoes (worn once) £15 Vinted and a silk Harrods waistcoat (perfect condition) for £4.50 in a charity shop. Picked up vintage glass dress shirt studs for £10 on EBay and DS had Cufflinks already. Hopefully he can re-wear for the Sixth form ball in two years time. Luckily DH often needs black tie for work events so will also use the bow tie, waistcoat and shirt studs.

Letskeepgoing · 28/06/2023 06:36

Looked everywhere for a shirt to fit my ds and nothing. He needs a 14.5" collar, even the specialist suit shop doesn't shop that size. It can't be that unusual. I've had to order online.

minisnowballs · 28/06/2023 11:19

DD's dress is also from a charity shop - though we had it taken in a bit. 1960s I think... Not black tie, but hers would be fine for it - so should work for sixth form too if needed.

Thank you! Yes I found some today online in Next!

I hope the kids have all enjoyed their end of year celebrations. I think our school does a yr 11 prom because a few parents organise it. Yr 13 is far more casual!

Charity shops are a great source of prom wear.

Back in '83 DH bought a DJ in an Eastbourne charity shop which happened to have an expandable waistband strip. Whilst he has cantered up the BMI index it still looks pretty decent (though jacket collar styles might go in and out of fashion).

Hellocatshome · 29/06/2023 15:01

I had to tell someone but DS doesnt want anyone to know until after results day so I'm telling you lot instead. He has a conditional apprenticeship offer from a car manufacturer pending a medical and grades. He really really wanted it and he never really really wants anything so I'm buzzing for him.

Changes17 · 29/06/2023 15:04

Congratulations to your DS, @Hellocatshome That's brilliant he's found something he really wants to do. You must be very proud.

Rowgtfc72 · 29/06/2023 15:24

Oh wow @Hellocatshome that's absolutely brilliant. I know he was waiting on a few interview results.
Tell me its not mcclaren- dd would be green with envy as that's her ultimate goal.

BonjourCrisette · 29/06/2023 15:52

Huge congratulations! Well done to him!

@SheilaFentiman can you create a new thread?

Rowgtfc72 · 29/06/2023 19:13

@Hellocatshome still good. Engineering side wasn't it?!
Dds is with Trenton which is Nissan. She's hoping to catch sight of a GTR or Skyline🙂
