Making a new thread to support half term revision and the set of GCSEs afterwards!

This has been the longest half term ever! Dd had a nice day out with friends last Sunday, since then she’s barely been out of her room. I have no idea how much revision she’s done.

minisnowballs · 04/06/2023 14:41

We made it back from France last night (must admit I was a little worried that we might get stuck but all good. DD SHOULD be revising. She's gone to a friend's house to make earrings. You can lead a horse to water, right? We did do some together on the train - I now know a lot more about amino acids.

BackT · 04/06/2023 14:53

Grumpy doesn't really go far enough to describe DD today.
Is anyone else's kids doing Restoration England for History Paper 2? There is so little online help on it - it's the other part of the Medicine paper for DD. She's done Germany and Cold War in paper 1.

TripleDaisySummer · 04/06/2023 15:04

We've got Weimar Republic and Hitler rise to power for DS - which TBH I'm sick of let alone him.

DD1 desperately wanted to take history - Tudor history is her love - but they didn't have enough her year but it would have only touched on Tudors in Crime and punishment at best- DD1 ended up taking Geography instead and then took for A-level which despite being her best subject she dislikes and blames me for taking.

Honeylemonandginger · 04/06/2023 15:34

DD has UTI again and is struggling to stay motivated with revision.
I agree with a PP who stated that half-term makes it difficult to keep up the concentration levels.
I definitely feel that the next 2 weeks are going to be more of a challenge than the first two. Hot weather is not going to be welcome in the exam hall.😓

Letskeepgoing · 04/06/2023 16:44

Aqa paper 2 History is Elizabethan and Cold War, can I confirm?

Letskeepgoing · 04/06/2023 16:46

It seems a lot of our children are not motivated.....I think maybe it's too much for them, they probably needed half term just to rest.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 04/06/2023 17:05

Not much achieved here either, other than a little Spanish vocab. DD1 was genuinely pretty exhausted by the end of the half-term, so I was very pro a few days break, but she's struggled to motivate herself again.

Rightly or wrongly her view on English language is that it can't be revised for, and she's finished RE and computing, so just 6 subjects left on the table.

But she has a prom dress shortlist so the week hasn't been entirely wasted 😁. Ordered half a dozen from Monsoon and she's trying to divine which of her favourite three will be most appropriate - friends haven't decided either so no help there.

Blubell46 · 04/06/2023 17:27

Hi

I agree....dd and I thought she could get a lot done since there was still a lot to do but this half term has not been as productive as we both thought!!

Dd has watched a couple of videos and convinced herself she can't do anymore..Spanish is on Tuesday, maths on Wednesday and then a biology and geography on Friday! A packed week ..roll on June the 19th when it will all be over!

DontForgetToBreathe · 04/06/2023 18:22

I’ve done my shoulder in with trying NOT to show that I’m stressed 👽

DontForgetToBreathe · 04/06/2023 18:27

Well, we’ve done as much as we can. English language paper tomorrow. Mr Salles and Mr Everything English did a great video on the exam tomorrow, which did motivate DS. So now I’m going to lie in the hammock in the garden and listen to music. Dinner’s already done. Early bed. Good luck everyone.

OnthePisteAgain · 04/06/2023 18:29

DS is insisting that you can't revise for English language but he has grudgingly spent an hour or 2 looking over notes (probably combined with looking at Tik Tok!)

He's definitely lost the momentum of revising, he was doing 4/5 hours a day prior to the first set of exams. I think he's averaged 2 hours maximum during half term and that is only since Monday as he had a few (well earned) days off

DontForgetToBreathe · 04/06/2023 18:30

Letskeepgoing · 04/06/2023 16:44

Aqa paper 2 History is Elizabethan and Cold War, can I confirm?

Yes.

DontForgetToBreathe · 04/06/2023 18:41

Does anyone else feel like their life has stopped because of the GCSEs?? I can’t wait for this to be over

TeddybearBaby · 04/06/2023 18:45

I read on here about a poster whose daughter is going to (or planning) a burn the papers party. Really annoying but I can’t find it now. Been through the whole thread (well I feel like I have). Wanted to tell my son about it so hoping someone will remember what was said!

Thanks and good luck tomorrow everyone

PhotoDad · 04/06/2023 18:48

Hellocatshome · 01/06/2023 20:30

DS has been painting the garden walls and jet washing the yard as is planning on hosting a "bybabab" party on the 16th. Apparently it means burn your books and bring a bottle. He has also commandeered a neighbours chimnea for the event.

I wish he would put as much effort into revising for the exams as he does planning how to celebrate them finishing.

This one, @TeddybearBaby? 😎

TeddybearBaby · 04/06/2023 18:49

Brilliant @PhotoDad thanks a lot 👏🏼

Circleoffifths · 04/06/2023 18:53

Am quite glad half-term is behind us. It was very welcome at the time but now feel in limbo a bit. Am really hoping they are wrong about the weather and it doesn’t get too hot for the next couple of weeks. DD has been doing past papers but am not sure she learns much from the answers she gets wrong. She seems to think that doing a paper is enough without the next step of figuring out how to get the wrong answers right for next time.

ReformedWaywardTeen · 04/06/2023 19:06

I've bribed DD with going to see The Little Mermaid on Tuesday.

I was quite surprised they wanted to watch it. Apparently a combination of "supporting it when morons are kicking off about Ariel being black" and "oh and the actress who plays her is Leng" was why.

*Leng apparently means a very good looking person. Living with a lesbian teen is akin to how I imagine your average teenage boy is.

NCTDN · 04/06/2023 19:36

Dd is another who claims you can't revise for English language but tbh he has done some today. He's only got 4 this week and two of them are maths.

BaconAndAvocado · 04/06/2023 19:37

I’m definitely glad half term is behind us.
At dinner, DS2 said that he thought having a week off in the middle of his exams wasn’t helpful. He said, it feels hard to get back into the swing of things.

Just under 2 weeks to go........

Nowfeeltheneedtopost · 04/06/2023 19:56

My DD has a busy week coming up - 8 exams with 2 papers on 3 days! Eng lang, Spanish x2, maths, PE, further maths, biology, geography! She’s done some revision over halfterm but definitely took some breaks so hard to know how much has been done. I think she has a healthier attitude to GCSEs than I did - less of a perfectionist and clearer that they are just a gateway to next stage. So I’m trying to support her from a distance!

BonjourCrisette · 04/06/2023 20:46

DD has five exams next week. I think we were both glad of the break this week and happy to have some time where we don't have to think about it all the time! She has done some revision most days. After next week, she only has four exams left, quite widely separated, but it does all drag on a bit as the last one isn't until June 23rd.

Can't wait for it all to be over!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 04/06/2023 20:57

Some are doing maths and further maths all at once?

our lot are doing maths now (year 10) and November and then further maths next summer which seems a bit better.

Madcats · 04/06/2023 21:17

DD is a late June baby so (maybe useful or not) is busy worrying about planning her birthday party.

I honestly don't remember my A levels or O levels dragging on for more than a fortnight (yes, older parent). Another 2 weeks (and 7 exams) to go for us.
