Locating to Yorkshire ideally somewhere between York/Leeds/Doncaster. Budget 500k for 4 bed house. We have found one in Conisbrough however no nothing about the area as currently reside in Scotland! Have a 10 year old boy so schooling and extra curriculum activities (swimming/football/boxing/golf) would be ideally accessible near by. Quite an active family so being able to go for walks/cycles a short drive away or on our doorstep would be beneficial. Also being close proximity to city (30 min drive or so?) so can access shops, restaurants, bars, cinema, bowling, etc would be perfect. Any advice for secondary schools would be great? I believe it is De Warenne Academy catchment, does anyone know what additional support is like here as son is dyslexia and dyscalculia - now rated as Good by Ofsted 2021. Thanks!!

When you say 10... 10 as in nearly 11 (before September) or just 10?

NomadicSpirit · 07/03/2023 09:35

I'm not up to date on the area, but when I lived near Doncaster, it was not a very nice town at all. It may well have changed, but it was pretty dead and grim as was the surrounding area.

I'd look further north and avoid Selby as that's also a bit run down and the schools are not good there. Fulford school (South York catchment is an excellent school, but oversubscribed). There are a lot of nice villages in the area you're looking where your money will get a 4 bed house.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 07/03/2023 09:37

I wouldn’t move to where you are proposing if your are moving up to Leeds/York. Connisborough is not an area l would choose.

user1477391263 · 07/03/2023 09:45

Is the west side of Sheffield a possibility? I have family there and it is lovely, though housing is pricy. Great local state schools which almost everyone uses.

NomadicSpirit · 07/03/2023 09:56

@hanrit I live in that area btw, but not in the South. If you want to know about any other specific areas, then feel free to pm me. I'm currently sat in an office in Leeds... That's a big place!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 07/03/2023 10:04

@user1477391263 l live there and it is indeed very lovely!

Fantastic schools and half of the area is on the peak National Park. Sheffield was the most popular place to relocate to during lockdown due to its proximity to the country.

50000k should just squeeze in a 4 bed.

Will be 11 in October!

How close do you realistically need to be to Donny? I'd consider looking around Tadcaster and becoming friendly with the A1/A19.

Will be 11 in October!

So wherever you move, you just need to be there vefore the admissions deadline in October.

Doncaster schools do have a slightly complicated system with feeder schools and priority catchment areas. There's also the Free School (which has an Outstanding from 2017... but frankly had shocking results last year). But most of the time, you will get into your catchment area if you apply.

I'm the other side of Doncaster. Its not as bad as people make out!!

Swimming.. pools are a bit of short supply. But The Dome is fun (waves/slides). Ice rink there too.
Football... not sure. There are a few kids Rugby teams.

DeWarenne... we didn't like the look of any of Delta schools, but that was in the period of online open days.

It is, I used to live there, but it's a long way from Leeds, York and Doncaster (closer to Doncaster than the others though). It was getting new jobs in Leeds and Donny that caused us to move.

We would prefer the east side for work commuting. Also considered Harrogate/Wetherby/Boston Spa/Tadcaster areas but much more pricey. As well as North Leeds Rawdon/Guiseley/Otley but again didn’t see much that fitted our wish list in terms of house and our price bracket (4 bedroom - two of which are en-suite, wc downstairs, kitchen/dining/living, office, double garage, snug, good sized private garden). Around York is expensive but would ideally be our preferred location to be honest. There are couple of other houses we like one in Market Weighton, others were Howden and Alne. Also Newland, Selby but might avoid that too now based on response above.

Great to know! Thank you for advice I suppose all areas have good and bad bits.

Where exactly is the commute to? Might help people propose areas. Our location is perfect for access to the A1 and M18 for example

starlight207 · 07/03/2023 10:25

I live close to Conisbrough & would never buy there. You will get much nicer areas and schools for your money. Tbh I would avoid Doncaster altogether if I had your options.

I think you’ll be struggling to find that kind of house for that sort of money in a nice area.

As l said I live in west side of Sheffield. You wouldn’t get all that for 500k. I live in a 4 bed semi. Small garden, 2 receps and kitchen ( not big) and extension over garage. It’s worth about £525.

That sort of house you describe would be about 650-750 round me.

hanrit · 07/03/2023 10:33

Husbands work is not one location can be all over Yorkshire although tends to be around Bradford, Leeds, Wakefield and York mostly.

Have a looks at the villages around HD8 and Penistone. Excellent schools, good motorway network. I live in HD8 and dh and I work around Yorkshire - everywhere from Sheffield to Beverley between us at the moment.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 07/03/2023 11:55

Yes, some areas of Barnsley are lovely.

DaleTremont · 07/03/2023 12:00

Look at Pontefract. Small market town with lots going on, various clubs and societies for adults and kids alike and the town has some lovely cafes and bars. Some areas rougher around the edges than others but nowhere on the scale you’ll get in Doncaster or Leeds. Good transport links and house prices not too silly, you’d get a very nice 4 bed for your budget.

Rockingcloggs · 07/03/2023 13:22

I lived in conisbrough but have now moved to the next town! De Warrenne used to Northcliffe comp but is now De Warrenne and has come on in leaps and bounds.

Honestly, what is it that appeals to you about Conisbrough? 500k is a huuuuuuuge amount for a house there! If I was you, I'd consider Old Denaby instead with that budget - seriously!

hanrit · 07/03/2023 14:39

It was a house that we liked in Conisbrough rather than the particular area as we don’t know much about areas as we reside in Scotland. How did you find it when you lived there? Thank you will have a look at your other suggestion too!

Whetherby is in between York and Leeds. Don’t know much about it, but surely it’s better than Doncaster?

Doncaster sounds like an old Roman town, but it really isn’t.

PuttingDownRoots · 07/03/2023 16:18

If wanting access to most of Yorkshire I would go further north... there always seems to be roadworks north of Doncaster on the A1.

PuttingDownRoots · 07/03/2023 16:23

Maybe even as far north as Knaresborough or Thirsk. We lived near Thirsk for a while and it was very pleasant... as long as you don't need need easy access to a hospital.

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 07/03/2023 16:33

I used to live in Doncaster - there are some nice areas.

I live north of there now and south of York. I shop in York and Leeds.

Someone has mentioned Howden - lovely place. Also, Pocklington - lovely place. Along with Market Weighton and Beverley.
