@KPA - Echoing what @QuiteAJourney has said.

secondaryquandriesqq · 07/03/2023 21:44

@KPA sorry to hear that too. Is there still a chance that you will? I'm sure it will all work out for the best in time.
@QuiteAJourney thanks for your message. I agree that it's been a wonderful support to have this thread. Thanks all for the friendly and helpful messages.

Our son is also going to KGS.

Trickleg · 07/03/2023 22:05

KGS for us too (waves at @Dallasdays and @secondaryquandriesqq )

EweCee · 07/03/2023 22:27

Surbiton for us.

This thread has been a lifeline at times and massively increases my knowledge of the whole process so thank you to everyone who contributed. Perhaps we should all collaborate on a book to guide others in the future, might be shorter than wading through the 7 threads 😉 😄

It feels a bit like a wrap up with the thread - most people now decided and signed to the school where their DC will be in Y7.

On my side, I did not want to pass the opportunity to thanks those on these thread that have shared our journey ... we are all different, as are our circumstances and DC, but I firmly believe that the space provided for this thread has helped us (well, at least, it has helped me). Along the way I have made (somewhat unexpectedly) friends and felt part of a community. [A community with frictions on occasion, but a really positive experience overall]

Some of you may remember that my first post was about how I did not know how the process was going to play out with a smart but very anxious DD and, despite being in a prep for the last 3 years, we had the usual doubts about how things were going to pan out. She ended up coping with the process incredibly well (probably better than me!) and got offers from all the schools she applied to, with a couple of significant academic scholarships (including to Woldingham, one of her favourite schools) in the mix. Her preferences changed throughout the process (partly, as a result of the admissions processes - IPS going downhill, Emanuel going up) but also as she matured and got more confident about what she wanted in a school. She ended up choosing WHS (KGS was a very close second) and she is enthused about it (as are we).

Posting this hoping that other parents going through the process in the future can see that things can, and do, work out (sometimes in unexpected ways).

Thank you SO much for this thread and Congratulations to your DD! It’s been brilliant following the posts and speaking to you all and sharing the journeys! I’ve learnt so much along the way and have a very happy DS going to the fantastic Halliford in September- highly recommend them and the admissions process there - unlike some of the schools has been brilliant- really felt as though this was the right place for him. Thank you to you and to all for your insights and advice and feel so much more knowledgeable- am ready for DD now in a few years!

@QuiteAJourney Thank you for starting the thread and keeping it going. It's been a life line for me and I'm grateful for your help and support and that of those who have posted. I agree with @NellyCortado ,I'm sure our chats will continue when they begin their transition to secondary school.

Yes! Let’s please all share how everything is going- it’s such an exciting time!

It's Emanuel for us.

Same here, Emanuel for us, too

knopka · 09/03/2023 16:16

Wow Emanuel have too many offers accepted for Y6

KindergartenKop · 09/03/2023 16:18

How many is too many?

alltheleaves · 09/03/2023 16:19

We just got that letter too, sounds like a whole extra class! Asked if we'd like to defer to yr7.

Londonsummer · 09/03/2023 17:10

Hello, can you clarify please - is that for Y6 intake at Emanuel, we haven't heard anything about Y7?

ash86i · 09/03/2023 17:46

@Londonsummer that’s for the Y6 intake. DCs passing the Emanuel 10+. It looks like they might have to add a 3rd class for Year 6 if nobody defers.

Londonsummer · 09/03/2023 17:54

Thank you for clarifying. I can certainly understand the parents. Emanuel Website says if a pupil is offered a place for Y6 and rejects, they cannot apply again for Y7. It makes a lot of sense to accept Emanuel now and avoid the madness of 11+ when there are no guarantees you'll get a better offer, especially if you're certain coed is the way to go for your DC.

alltheleaves · 09/03/2023 18:02

Deferring for a year makes sense in some ways. In our case we'd save a year of fees because DS is in a state primary, but still have guaranteed a place in yr7 without the 11+ stress.

But DS is so excited about starting in September, talks about it a lot, was thrilled at getting in So I guess we're definitely keeping the yr6 place!

SamPoodle123 · 09/03/2023 18:27

Just curious, how many do they normally have in year 6? And how many is an extra class?

alltheleaves · 09/03/2023 18:36

Usually it's 48, 2 classes of 24.

ash86i · 09/03/2023 18:44

If they do go for 3 classes at year 6 they might have to decrease the intake next year at the 11+ entry. Not sure if this has happened before.

Yes, this is my assumption.

KindergartenKop · 09/03/2023 19:30

Offers vs acceptance rates are such a gamble for schools. It really is an art!

veryverybored · 09/03/2023 20:00

Surprised they over offer by much at all at 10plus. Anyone I've known apply was always going to take it if they got an offer. I'd be very tempted to defer if I had a place - nice relaxing y6 with all the fun stuff that goes with it towards the end and no stress!

QuiteAJourney · 09/03/2023 22:48

@veryverybored we know of 2 families that rejected Emanuel at 10+ last year from our prep (out of 4 offers). One of the DC is off to KGS on an academic scholarship, the other one has accepted an offer from LU.
I think that some of the kids taking 10+ at Emanuel also take other 10+ offering deferred entry (eg KGS) which might prove more attractive given the flexibility they afford. And some do just to test the waters...
