So my Yr 11 daughter has come home today. The school has decided to no longer have a Head Boy and Head Girl and instead 2 'Head Pupils'
Today the winners were announced.

Yep you guessed it. 2 Head Boys

I am flipping fuming. She's in sixth form next year and said what's the point of even running for it.

I don't see a problem. They will probably have two girls next year

Timeforaliein · 06/02/2023 16:51

I think this is fine too. That means it will be the best people for the job - sometimes it might be two girls? That's how the corporate world works - you don't get a role based on your gender

booboo82 · 06/02/2023 16:53

Livid 🤣🙈

MaggieFS · 06/02/2023 16:54

I'd be cross too. I think at those ages and for younger children - presumably down to 11 - it's important to have balanced role models and something to aspire to. Even if the two boys are the best two for the job, I think the importance of demonstrating sex equality in a school should take precedence. There's time enough to learn that the adult world isn't like that.

IhearyouClemFandango · 06/02/2023 16:58

Yeah, that's a bit of a piss take. We had head students many moons ago and girls were equally represented.

IhearyouClemFandango · 06/02/2023 16:58

Smacks of the music awards all over again

threesixnine · 06/02/2023 16:58

So for those in favour how is a 17 year old boy a good role mode for a year 8 Girl.
It's nonsense and you know it.

This is true, indeed even in the corporate world your merits alone sometimes won't be enough. That said, I think being 'livid' is OTT; but as the PP says it would have been good to demonstrate sex equality in the school setting. The kids have a long life ahead in which they'll soon learn who you're related to and friends with matters a lot more than anything else when it comes to plum positions.

Van96 · 06/02/2023 17:21

I was relieved to read it wasn't 2 girls. Assume these lads were deemed to be the best two for the job.

Why were you relieved it wasn’t 2 girls?
I am with you OP, should be one of each

Because, regretfully, in the school my children attend there would be an outcry if 2 boys were elected as head students - I doubt it would be allowed - but the selection of 2 girls would be celebrated. I wish we could just take gender out of these discussions entirely.

TheFretfulPorpentine · 06/02/2023 17:38

The head boy/girl post is of no practical significance anyway, so what does it matter who gets the title?

catchingzzzeds · 06/02/2023 17:39

Were they not voted for by the pupils?

SomersetBrie · 06/02/2023 17:56

If it was voted for by pupils, I think that boys are more likely to vote for another boy than for a girl. It's highly unlikely to be two girls next year.
Girls will get used to boys being in charge again, which is quite depressing.

There should be an outcry at either.
Why is it whenever we take sex out of these discussions it favours males?

Partyandbullshit · 06/02/2023 18:00

Maybe none of the girls are good enough role models?

Quite

Do you seriously think that in a Grammar school year 12 of about 75 girls that none were good enough??
In an era where the likes of Andrew Tate are lauded by teenage boys this just adds weight to the Girls are inferior arguments.

I mean, you didn’t exactly give much context in your OP. When I was in 6th form (all girls’ school), in our cohort of 90 girls not one of us stood up for/was a decent ally to a girl who was bullied so badly she ended up taking her life. We all knew, albeit not the extent of it all. Had another pupil stood up, boy or girl, then yes. I can conceive that not one girl was a good enough role model.

I have mixed DC, for the record.

BromCavMum · 06/02/2023 18:26

I agree with you OP. The unfairness of the adult world should not necessarily be forced on kids. Balance is in order. (I become more of a witch every day).

MrWhippersnapper · 06/02/2023 18:28

How were they picked ? Did pupils vote ? Candidates have to make a speech at my school

Can you not see the difference? Why one may be celebrated more than the other?

Perhaps it matters greatly to their unrepresented peers?

helloDIY · 06/02/2023 18:56

How many teacher apologists are on here (as usual) 🙄?

OP I agree. This is one of the reasons I've chosen single sex schools for my DDs. It's so important to be represented and have relatable role models through school. I'd be livid too.

IhearyouClemFandango · 06/02/2023 18:57

If it doesn't matter, they shouldn't exist.
