Your DS is very clever, this question is on a scholarship paper.

I am just wondering how many 10 year can do it.

Any top set child who has been taught how to apply this technique by their tutor.

AC7001 · 25/01/2023 23:58

No tutor will teach this, as this rarely or ever comes up in exam, and there are hundreds or thousands of different types of techniques. You can't learn all. It is the understanding of numbers that will help a clever child to do this.

Londonsummer · 26/01/2023 00:04

You are contradicting yourself, if it rarely or ever comes up in an exam, why did the OP ask it? I don't think OP made it up as a challenge to others?
I remember seeing a very similar question in a past paper, hence my comment that a child who has solved an iteration below would know to apply the technique.

Not SPGS section C it is CLSG sample paper 🙃1 hour a day can't remember anymore...

DS had his last interview yesterday (Dulwich) and now the long wait begins. We don't have a favourite and will just be grateful for whatever we get given how unpredictable this whole process can be. How is everyone feeling? Anymore interviews?

Hope Dulwich went well.

We still have Harrodian interview on Saturday morning and then it will be done. The offers before Christmas really help with the wait so we are not too stressed, but obviously keen and hoping that offers come through.

But whatever happens, we will be celebrating that the process is over and that DD has gone through it in a balanced, calm and constructive way.

"(X squared - Y squared) = (X+Y) (X-Y)"

Is your DD doing 11+?

This is a very deep question I have to say, SPGS section C past paper had sth similar but it is much easier, they only ask the pattern, but even the formula.

Yes, this one looks very complicated!

Daydreamscometrue · 26/01/2023 07:38

@QuiteAJourney yes he really enjoyed his interview at Dulwich. Good luck at Harrodian!

QuiteAJourney · 26/01/2023 07:42

@Daydreamscometrue thanks

Ah, @QuiteAJourney it must be great having an offer in the bag already! All of our schools only start communicating offers from next week, so in the nail biting stage at the moment. Just highlights again how drawn out this process is with some offers pre-Christmas and yet still interviewing for others! I am trying to satisfy myself that we only need 1 offer (out of 4 schools)....

EweCee · 26/01/2023 07:48

Does anyone know how they evaluate scholarship applicants? e.g shorlisted for a scholarship but then perhaps not offered a scholarship (but good enough to get through to 2nd round of scholarship assessments), would they then be considered 'higher' up the list for a general offer or just reset to the same as everyone else based on exam scores/ interviews? This is non academic scholarships of course.

I know the exam is over for most, but can the mums here do me a favour and help to ask their kids to see if this math problem is difficult or easy?

Find the 2 factors of 9991 with steps and workings.

I suppose the methodology is equally (if not more) important than the answer.

I think easy when you know the method but pretty hard otherwise. My DS has done this method at school, as I remember him proudly showing it to me. I don't know whether he would remember it in an exam though.

Seems like an unfair question since it is about knowing a trick and those that don't know the trick have a mammoth exercise to tease the answer out.

pme · 26/01/2023 07:53

@2012mom

DS had a go this morning and he used the brutal force method 😂

Gave him some hints with the paper @PreplexJ shared above he had the lightbulb moment eventually.

Asked ChatAPT got the wrong answer! 🤖

@Marisquita your DS is real sharp!

If it was an academic scholarship they definitely would be above. For a non academic scholarship they would be the same as others although if they were equal with someone else and a tie breaker was needed I am sure it would be considered.

EweCee · 26/01/2023 08:29

Thanks @VickiMent, it's as I thought.

Twickmum1 · 26/01/2023 13:19

By the way on Emanuel … and I can’t remember who mentioned it earlier in the thread. We asked about interview numbers at our interview this week. They confirmed they are interviewing 2/3rds of applicants.

QuiteAJourney · 26/01/2023 13:26

@Twickmum1 Thanks. It seems that they have stuck to their plan.

And we’re done! DD had her last interview at LEH today. Thank you to all those on this thread that have helped with hints and tips throughout.

Just the nerve racking wait now.

Best of luck everyone!

QuiteAJourney · 26/01/2023 14:17

@Taurus23 congrats! Well done to your DD.

@Twickmum1 Thanks. It seems that they have stuck to their plan.

I wonder if there is a way to square the numbers- if they included the 10+ and 11+ callbacks in their 2/3 calculation, could it be 500 from the 11+ group and the remainder from the 10+? 100% speculative and I’m clearly overthinking this!

But then you would need to take into account both the 11+ and the 10+ applications when calculating 2/3... and there were over 900 of 11+ applicants (and the reference, if I recall rightly, was in a 11+ video)

It's just so nerve-racking, I am so happy that Emanuel interview is done. It was not in any way grilling and the interviewer was able to put son at ease and he was very happy coming out and said it went well. Now to wait until 10th February.
