Hi. My son sat the Hampton 10+ last weekend. Does anyone know how many boys sat the exam this year or when we should hear about interviews (which I know are on 21/22 Nov)? Looking on mumsnet for last year I guess we might hear quite soon - but there were so many sitting the exam I’m not holding my breath!

Jumping on this thread as my son sat it too 😊

I'm sure when DS sat it ( a few years ago) they gave us a letter or something on the day with all the dates we should find out. I think the turnaround was quite quick though. Good luck!

Ststreet · 08/11/2022 11:43

Last year we were notified of being selected for the interview six days after the exam.

travelturtle · 09/11/2022 19:01

Ah they’ve just emailed. Results will be emailed 15 Nov. At least I can stop checking for a few days 😂

Hi Bewler, do you know how many sat? Did your son get through?

Bewler · 19/11/2022 20:20

@lolo99 he didn’t, but this was his first ever exam experience so we weren’t expecting it. Just good practice for the 11+ 😊. Lots of boys sat the exam, my DS said many seemed to know each other. He did well to make it through the exam without sh*ting himself with fear IMO. 🤣

lolo99 · 19/11/2022 20:26

Ah well done for being brave. My son sat it also but I wasn't sure how many sat it. It looked a lot. He didn't know anyone.

@Bewler , Prep schools like surbiton boys prep that end at year 6 will have a large % of the year taking the Hampton 10 plus for exam experience rather than passing the exam. It's the same with the KGS 10 plus.

And state school primary also. My child is currently in a state school.

My DS didn’t get an interview either, but we are ok with that as we were using it as exam practice for next year. We got a v encouraging email from Hampton and know others who didn’t get through on 10+ but did at 11+ (we did 11+ with my eldest last year). @hnryjames16 we didn’t really practice for this one (literally just did an Emanuel and KGS 11+ paper that was available online), but having been through the process before best advice is to practice the styles of questions that come up by looking at past papers etc. My DS is v strong in maths and found the Hampton paper absolutely fine, but we know we need to work on his English for next year. Hampton also has something called “maths wizard” with weekly trickier maths question if you want to try those (they are for 11+ tho). Good luck!

The 10+ is usually a maths paper & a creative writing exam. About 200+ boys apparently sit and then they interview about a quarter of those. They give out maybe 30-40 places. If applying for a bursery or scholarship they need to do the 11+ as well but won’t forfeit their place if not successful. Boys need to be good at maths and able to write well - either a short story or a descriptive piece. The school also look at their last report & a reference from their current school.

hnryjames16 · 21/11/2022 17:23

@travelturtle @Christmascactu Thank you very much. Much appreciated.

lolo99 · 21/11/2022 21:30

I would second this. My DS did get through to interview and we did lots of maths practice. He said that the questions were worded 'differently' to those practised and that is because Hampton write their own questions to try and find boys who are strong in maths through natural understanding rather than specific taught things. Writing- reading lots of good texts helps with language.

Lexus1979 · 29/11/2022 14:52

Any one Made it through to Hampton ?

Thrilledboy · 29/11/2022 21:39

YES we are so happy DS made it

Lexus1979 · 29/11/2022 21:47

Well done Thrilled boy. Same here

Thrilledboy · 29/11/2022 22:24

Congratulations

lolo99 · 01/12/2022 21:42

We did. So happy. We will probably need a bursary though. Does anyone know if you have to give up your place for that or do you still hold it? I know you have to sit the 11 plus still.

Are you sure about not forfeiting their place if not successful at the 11+? Surely with bursary, if they make them take the 11+, then they have to be successful at that exam and awarded a bursary...both? If they didn't mind if they don't pass the 11 plus, then they would allow bursary applications at 10+

sailingsunshine · 02/12/2022 22:59

@lolo99 , a fair number of ds who accept the 10 plus place and pay the deposit don't end up going to Hampton because they go to grammar schools or get offered a hefty scholarship from another school at 11 like KCS. Therefore there is no point in the school going through the bursary process with a parent a year before the child joins because circumstances may change. A scholarship is different and as stated before worth 5-20% of fees etc, it needs to be compared to all the ds sitting the same exam at the same age hence you need to sit the 11+ exam.
If you have a 10plus place you have a guaranteed full fees place and then the option of a scholarship or bursary a year later.

lolo99 · 02/12/2022 23:27

Thank you. It seems unfair that a bursary cannot be secured at 10 plus stage if accepted. Clearly DS is clever enough and the type of child they want. Why make those sit another proving exam?
