Hello everyone, here is a shiny new thread ready for DC’s results day tomorrow and a much needed hand hold for us nervous parents. 🥴🤪

Tomorrow is the culmination of an incredibly turbulent 2 year journey that our young people have had to navigate. Fraught with ups and downs. They have done us all proud!!

Here is a link to the previous thread: www.mumsnet.com/talk/secondary/4566030-current-year-11-2-more-weeks-of-exams?page=37&reply=119483572

One of the teachers came over to high five her, looked through her results and praised her for the subjects he knew she was worried about and said he looked forward to seeing her next week so that was lovely. I’ve asked if he can be her and dds tutor for 6th form if he gets any say- we’ll see next week.

People like this make such a monumental impact on others lives. Amazing.

What a turnaround. She deserves to be delighted with herself!

Thank you. I hope this gives her some confidence as we are so proud of her x

CatLadyDrinksGin · 25/08/2022 21:39

And I have to say the ‘high five’ is about the only way a male teacher can have physical contact with a female pupil who he’s proud of without any weirdness. So nice that he rushed over to see dd (9 for his subject), dd’s girlfriend (8 for his subject) and the autistic friend (an amazing 7 for his subject) knowing they’re all back next week for his A level class 😂😂.

Ds is a bit bemused by his English results. In his mocks and past papers he normally gets 8+ so it was two subjects he felt most confident about but he ended up with 6s. He's not quite sure where he went wrong with those exams. But he's not too disappointment and he didn't go to pieces during the exam period which is amazing.

@GhostTypeeEevee the English results are a bit crazy. Did he do AQA? I know a child with all 8s/9s who got a 5 in English Lang. Very odd. My DS got what predicted (5s) but his friend who is same level got 4s and much higher in everything else. DS also got no mark for English Lang (just the grade) and a strange 'M' next to the grade (does that mean they lost the paper?).

I wondered if it was the school's fault for the low grades. Ds1 did say English Lang was difficult.

M is merit for the speaking part.

My DD seems to have bucked the trend and done better than expected in English! AQA English Lang scores seem to be universally missing?

Shongle · 25/08/2022 22:45

@AngelsWithSilverWings I wish we had the option of a Grammar School. My son's (independent) school is very academic and these are poor gracias but they are happy to have him back. We have come to terms with leaving and he has been remarkable to today. The only Grammar Schools where we are ( London area) are way out of reach.but we can only face what's in front of us. I'm so pleased for your DS , wishing him all the best for A level.xx

miserablecat · 25/08/2022 23:07

Yes we didn't get a English Language score just a D.

Kaftankween · 26/08/2022 01:22

@miserablecat inthink the D represents distinction in the spoken exam which doesn’t count toward overall grade.

MyOtherProfile · 26/08/2022 04:56

As in no mark on the results sheet? AQA here and Eng Lang mark is there just like all the others.

We are AQA and no mark on the sheet either

Thanks. Maybe I will get an email then

Certificates don't come out until November after all the remarks and appeals.
Schools 'normally' (pre-covid) hold presentation evenings so all the old cohort get together one last time. After that evening pupils can make arrangements to get them other ways. I guess it's different for boarding schools.

ps DD had an AQA English Language breakdown on her results slip from college.

Yes, that's correct.
AQA here for Eng Lang and it has marks

Norma27 · 26/08/2022 06:47

No AQA Eng Lang mark here. Just the speaking part mark where she got a D.

Some lovely results on here. My daughter did get 5 9s and 5 8s from a comp which nobody else went to in her year at primary as they thought it was beneath them even though it was the feeder school and most could walk there.
It is a decent school with great teachers and good ofsteed, but because of the area it is pure snobbery. The school most chose is in a posh area but has a real bullying problem. I am delighted the school has some top grades and that we trusted our gut. I know one girl got all 9s there and maybe others too.
i am just as proud of one of her best friends who really struggled and got 4,s 5,s and 6,s and they can stay at school sixth form together.

middleager · 26/08/2022 07:20

A pp mentioned their daughters friends getting mostly 9s and how that can be a little tougher on the friends who don't. This is the situation with my twins:

One twin got 8x9 2x8 (one mark off a 9, which I think is bothering him as he was all 9s in his mocks) and an A in Add Maths. He has always been consistent in his grades.

My other twin got a mixture of 6 to 9 and we are never quite sure what he'll get.
It must be difficult when your brother gets mostly 9s, yet your own results are fantastic in their own right. I was thrilled for him to get the grades he wanted for his A Levels too.

They are at different schools, which helps, as although he was on the 'top tables' in primary, his twin was very much the star there. I have always tried to balance this out (I hope). They also both genuinely celebrate each other's achievements, which makes me very proud as they are always there for each other.

They are doing the same A-Levels (DT1 is doing an extra in further maths) continuing at their different schools. What's sweet is that they are close and that DT1 will always help his brother with study etc.

Womblesaremyfavouritefood · 26/08/2022 07:52

Passed all, but lower grades than expected. Difficult to see DC upset when they worked so, so hard. School were utterly wonderful and DC is going back there for A levels.

Norma27 · 26/08/2022 07:55

My friend has twins who are two of my daughter’s best friends too. Luckily they got almost identical marks. I think if the exam they took last year is taken into account they do have the same!
Must be difficult for twins when one finds study easier. Great to hear they support each other.

MsTSwift · 26/08/2022 08:17

Yes agree the “old money” more forgiving Dd got one 7 then a mixture of 8s and 9s we all thrilled if it were 1993 that’s all As end of

CornishGem1975 · 26/08/2022 08:26

We didn't have a mark for AQA English Language either

savehannah · 26/08/2022 08:41

I read something here about requesting a review, I didn't even know that was a thing. Having looked up the grade boundaries my dd missed a 6 in drama by 1 point. Obviously grades for performance are quite objective, also she ended up doing sound tech for one group performance which meant she didn't show off her excellent performance skills 😡
Just not sure if there's any point asking for a review. She's not doing A-level drama and it doesn't affect her college place. It's just annoying.

Ihavethisthingwithcolour · 26/08/2022 09:21

Can I join in with my ds results?!

I don’t feel I can plaster it all over social media…
we went with him yesterday and he was sooo nervous - shaking in fact. Ds said he was going to grab the envelope and run however teachers kept willing him to open it and grinning at me 😄

ds got eight 9s and two 8s
two marks off a 9 in maths, 4 marks off a 9 in eng Lang.

I’m still in shock!!

He wants to do medicine and knew he needed everything above a 7 to show he has the aptitude for exams etc… He deserves this so much, he’s highly dyslexic but very bright. So happy!!

Ihavethisthingwithcolour · 26/08/2022 09:23

Oh and I should mention he’s not at private school and his school really struggled to get online working going through lockdown!!

Apparently this might be a technical issue depending on the programme your school uses to generate the printed results sheets. Ours only have the spoken language (P, M or D) and the overall grade but not the marks. That exists but it was something to do with the number of columns required to print. Which is ridiculous but there we go!!

PugInTheHouse · 25/08/2022 18:40

I have seen so many FB posts and it makes me so mad, so much pressure on the kids and also a lot of bullshit. One friend has posted a photo of her DD getting her results saying congratulations she's passed when she hasn't really, a few others suggesting top marks when their DCs have told mine they have mostly 4s. I fear for DCs mental health if even their own parents can't actually celebrate what they have achieved and their actual brilliance rather than what they would have liked them to achieve. So much pressure these days, and also for a year group that have been stitched up compared to last couple of years.

We will have a tough time with DS2 as he has additional needs but whatever I know he'll work hard and do something he will excel in even if it's not massively academic.

If my son achieves fours next year I will be delighted you bet I will be praising him ,my son isn't academic in the slightest, he's always struggled at school ,it would be a massive achievement for him ,parents can be rightly proud of their kids if they have worked hard even if they get lower passes .

PugInTheHouse · 26/08/2022 10:07

Savehannah - We are waiting for marks still, I suspect DS is very close to a 6 for PE, he doesn't need a pass in it even but we will complain to the school as the teaching was shocking and there were issues with the practical submissions. We want them to improve in that area as we have another DS that will be affected. Its been an issue for several years.

X2Boys - absolutely, I will not feel I'd have to pretend my DS2 has 7s etc as we are proud of what he is able to do. DS1 is naturally academic so will never have to work as hard to achieve good results. He does work hard but it's totally different.

PugInTheHouse · 26/08/2022 10:20

I agree with the 'old money' sounding better, a 5 sounds so low but if you said an A*, 3 As, 3 Bs and a C everyone would say wow that's fab. People feel like that have to explain away 4s and 5s now but they are still passes. I dislike the changes. 7s sound low and they really aren't. I guess eventually the comparisons will stop and it will be fine.
