Hello everyone, here is a shiny new thread ready for DC’s results day tomorrow and a much needed hand hold for us nervous parents. 🥴🤪

Tomorrow is the culmination of an incredibly turbulent 2 year journey that our young people have had to navigate. Fraught with ups and downs. They have done us all proud!!

Here is a link to the previous thread: www.mumsnet.com/talk/secondary/4566030-current-year-11-2-more-weeks-of-exams?page=37&reply=119483572

All as predicted for dd except for a 6 in English literature. Seems like there are a few anomalies in English and history. One of dd’s friends was predicted 6/7 and achieved 3/4 and very upset (understandably) but school is requesting scripts so hopefully an error.

Hello everyone,

I hope it's ok to join today. Well done to everyone.
My DS is very disappointed ☹️. He was hoping for much better results and set his sights higher.
His results were

Maths 8
English 8
History 8
Geography 7
Physics 7
Biology 7
French 6
Chemistry 6
Spanish 5

He was attending a very high achieving private school but although they are happy to have him return we don't it's right thing for our family to do.
He has a place as of today at a 6th form college.
He has ask me to look for advice form the Mumsnet experts , if he managed to turn things around and achieved A* at A level could he apply to a top university with the results in hand. He August born and a year after A level "s wouldn't be the end of the world for us.

He wants to study Maths, Economics and History at A level and hopes to study at LSE, UCL, Warwick etc.

Thank you, it's been a difficult day in our house.xx

In old money that’s A stars, As, a couple of Bs and a B/high C.

I much prefer the letter system. Numbers have made it ridiculously competitive for those getting the top three grades.

Mangolist · 25/08/2022 18:53

Just checked dd's re grade boundaries. So many were one or two of fthe next grade, but they were 7's to 8's or 8's to 9's and to be honest thats fine! She got one 9 (eng lang and a D) 4 8's, 3 7s and a 6 in Maths which has made her day as she hated it!
Some of her peers got 8 9's and similar. A year ago she would have been devastated as her mental health was shocking, but she's so much better now that she's just very 'meh' which has made me even prouder.

clary · 25/08/2022 19:55

Not been on the thread but having skimmed it I wanted to say a massive well done to everyone's DC who worked hard and achieved well. I would also like to single out @Lovemusic33 's DD as that is amazing, massive well done to her.

My DS1 achieved two Cs and three Ds (years ago obvs) when in fact proably should" have got much less; I wanted to shout about it too. Often it is the achievements that are hardest fought for that mean the most.

@Shongle those grades are very good. How very sad that your DS is disappointed. A 5 is a strong pass and an 8 is equivalent to an old A*. Of course if he does well at A level he can go to virtually any university. DS2 has similar GCSE grades and had his pick of RG unis. Please help him see how well he has in fact done.

Despite what you may sometimes read on MN, very few DC actually gain all 9s.

cheninblanc · 25/08/2022 20:12

My dd got 3 4s in English and maths and French. She was predicted a 2 in maths so this is incredible! She got an 8 in performing arts and the rest was 3s. She's going to a new 6th form where she'll do performing arts and media. Absolutely thrilled with her, she really struggles to get her grades but never missed anything in lock down, attended every after school club and always did homework. She's earnt her grades and we are so so happy with her

CatLadyDrinksGin · 25/08/2022 20:16

I’m especially proud of dd’s friend who has autism and spent primary school throwing chairs and swearing, nearly wasn’t “allowed” into mainstream secondary. One parent with huge mental health issues, the other works nights, barely a gcse between them. Got mostly 7s today and off to do science A levels. That is a massive achievement. Much more so than my dd who has parents with degrees, plenty of support (academic and emotional) and is naturally academic (with bonus anxiety and introversion but less of a barrier than others).

That focus and work ethic will take her far. You should be very proud

Such an achievement. Such a journey. Love to see this - shows how far love and support can take someone. I expect there are people around her who feel deeply rewarded by their involvement.

I'm SLT in a school, with one of my responsibilities being exams. When I received the results yesterday there was one student I cried for with joy. It wasn't a student that got 8s and 9s. It was a student who achieved 5 Grade 4s. If you had said to me 3 years ago that she would achieve 5 Grade 4s, I wouldn't have believed it. Her results are a testament of the effort that she, her family and her teachers have put in to help overcome the trauma she has suffered in her life. I have honestly never felt so proud of a student.

The news always seems to focus on those who got a full set of 8s and 9s. They're not the only ones who have worked hard.

blackpearwhitelilies · 25/08/2022 20:31

lovemusic How brilliant. Well done your DD. My DS another one who was never going to get the 8s and 9s, but we were thrilled with him a few years ago and he’s flying now!

I work at Exeter and those grades would be absolutely fine for us. Well done to your DS. He’s done v v well, even if it doesn’t feel like it right now.

Totally agree. Whilst I'm pleased for the (in our case) few kids with the 8s and 9s, it's the kids who have fought for every bastard mark that make my heart sing. Often, the 8 and 9 kids have pretty much had it sorted through school: supportive parents etc. It's the ones you hoped would get a 4 but end up with a 5 or 6, or the ones who need that 4 to escape, that you pin all your hopes on.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 25/08/2022 20:36

@Shongle my DS got almost identical results to your DS and we have been jumping around and crying tears of joy and relief all day!

It's very competitive to get a place at his grammar school 6th form and his results were more than enough to win him a place. I'm genuinely confused by your DS's disappointment in his excellent set of results!

My DS also wants to do a similar degree and has said the LSE is his first choice although is realistic about how difficult it will be to get in. We know he probably won't but we feel that if he aims high he will get a place somewhere great.

He wants to work in accounting and finance. He's just finished a two week internship/work experience with a big 4 accountancy firm in London learning how to do financial modelling and is hoping to do another next year with another accountancy firm or an investment bank or private equity firm. I'm hoping this will count for more than a slightly higher grade GCSE when it comes to applying for University.

We've come through two school lockdowns and my DS's mental health was in bits a year ago - our kids have done amazingly well to come through this.

Yes, it's sad to hear of young people with very good grades feeling disappointed. I know the system was changed to provide more discrimination between pupils but I think sometimes it's helpful to turn things back into "old money" and remember that 7s would have been As, which I doubt many people would have been disappointed in. A 7 is a high grade to be celebrated.
My DS got all 7-9s bar one 6 and I've had a couple of messages from people whose kids have got mostly 9s along the lines of "Oh don't be too upset, he's such a lovely boy, and there's more than one way to be successful in life other than academic prowess". WTAF?! We're thrilled! He worked very hard and got what would have been the equivalent of 6 A* 2 A and 1B a few years ago for heaven's sake, and I feel very optimistic about his future. But some of these people are speaking like he is on the scrap heap at 16 because he didn't get as many 9s as their kid. Total and utter garbage. Every pupil who has reached their potential should be celebrated.
I also teared up when I read @Lovemusic33 's posts. What an incredible achievement that should be shouted from the rooftops. That is what success looks like, with bells on.

My thoughts exactly! I got 1 A, 7 Bs and 2 DS in my GCSEs about 30 years ago. I was definitely considered academic!! Went on to do A levels and a 2:1 from a Russell Group Uni.

One of my D grades was in French. My DS who is about to start year 10 has a target grade of 7 for Spanish. An A! And the poor kid thinks that is poor and he is no good at it. Bonkers.

Purple24 · 25/08/2022 21:13

Does anyone know if we get actual certificates, not just the results sheet of paper?

DianaGarageDoors · 25/08/2022 21:14

they get certificates but not for a few months.

NameInUseAlreadyAgain · 25/08/2022 21:16

9 passes : one 7. Four 6. Two 5. Two 4

one fail - a 3 but just ONE mark off a 4 so appeal gone in. Nothing to lose but £38!

NameInUseAlreadyAgain · 25/08/2022 21:16

Do they get posted ? DS has left his secondary school so how to collect them ?!

My daughter was told she would fail.

She had mocks of 1s and 2s

She actually got 4s, 5s and 6s today.

Absolutely amazing.

Our son was predicted a 5 in Lit and got a 3. One mark off a 4. We’ve already sent in remark and script send back appeal for £38.50.

it makes no difference if he gets a 4 but one mark is worth a go. Nothing to lose as it’s a fail as it stands anyway.

One of the teachers came over to high five her, looked through her results and praised her for the subjects he knew she was worried about and said he looked forward to seeing her next week so that was lovely. I’ve asked if he can be her and dds tutor for 6th form if he gets any say- we’ll see next week.

I imagine that this is school dependent, but DC's school have said certificates have to be collected in person by the student, or another person who they nominate in writing.
