Can I just ask what the reasoning is for releasing marks. Most of DD’s are AQA.

I can see it being helpful if someone gets a 3 to know if they were miles off passing or just missed it, even if you don't go for a mark review. It gives an idea whether resitting in Nov is worth it or whether they should wait a whole year.

Or maybe a school/college which is willing to be flexible on entrance criteria if you 'just' missed the required grade?

DD1 was a few years back but I found it somewhat interesting to know she just missed her B for one subject and just missed an A for another. (The C and B she did get were as anticipated.)

Lightsabre · 17/08/2022 18:57

Can I ask how they get the actual Marks please? Are they on a separate slip of paper?

PaddingtonPaddington · 17/08/2022 19:04

@Lightsabre Here’s any example slip from AQA: filestore.aqa.org.uk/admin/results-days/AQA-CSPR-EX-2022.PDF

page 2 is GCSE

Lightsabre · 17/08/2022 19:19

Thanks @PaddingtonPaddington . So each exam board will have the results on a sheet. Ds will be interested to see the breakdown but will torment himself if he's on the borderline for the next grade up in anything. I guess we won't know the grade boundaries for a while though?

PaddingtonPaddington · 17/08/2022 19:49

I’m not sure for each exam board what they are doing as only looked up AQA. The grade boundaries will be out the same day as results. Schools may give out each exam board slips or combine on to one sheet.

legosunqueen · 17/08/2022 21:38

Well done with the jobs @zighead & @NameInUseAlreadyAgain

@Naem those are high requirements. We've just had another look at DS's school & he needs 7 to take Maths (8 for further Maths) but other subjects are 5s or 6s. We are given the impression that the requirements are set in stone...

@WombatChocolate that's very helpful insight & humanises for me a process that seems very mechanical & rigid. It's such an emotional time & we know that there will be students who do less well than expected & that not everyone has the tools to deal with a bad outcome.

@Silkierabbit that's good that you are through the radio & that Mr Floof continues to work his magic. Hope you are getting done traction with support for your DS.

Good luck to everyone waiting for A level results tomorrow Flowers

Womblesaremyfavouritefood · 18/08/2022 09:48

Has anyone seen anything about AQA results being delayed (for A levels today too) due to strikes, or is this just scare mongering?

Lightsabre · 18/08/2022 09:56

Seems to have gone quiet on the AQA strikes @Womblesaremyfavouritefood.

Good luck to those today who also have dc A level results coming in.

MirandaWest · 18/08/2022 13:37

DS got his A level results today including one from AQA. No issues with getting AQA results through so hopefully should be the same next week

Purple24 · 18/08/2022 16:28

I've found you all pretty late... getting quite nervous for results day now. Ds was tagged at a grade 8 from his year 6 SAT results which has weighed heavy on him throughout secondary school. His school expected him to get an 8 in every subject and if he didn't, he was failing to them.

We've had numerous ups and downs with confidence due to it and his first set of mocks were a flop. Second set much better but he definitely lost his way with revision for the actual exams. Added to that huge disruption at home due to his sibling having mental health issues, it's been a bit of a rollercoaster!

How are you all planning to celebrate/mark the occasion? My ds will be going out with friends later in the afternoon but I feel we should celebrate somehow.

legosunqueen · 18/08/2022 16:59

Welcome @Purple24 it's very stressful isn't it, particularly now we're so close to the results. That sounds like a lot of pressure on your DS...

DS is off to Leeds fest the following day (eek!) so we will have a family lunch out (DH & me both WFH) or fish & chips for tea on results day itself.

LouisCatorze · 18/08/2022 17:52

Ds was tagged at a grade 8 from his year 6 SAT results I'd love to know how many young people keep on their trajectories. DD tagged at a grade 6 for most of hers apart from RE (7), although she only did foundation maths so she's already down on that target (but likely wouldn't have been without the lockdowns). They're not unreasonable for her but think she is capable of a few 7s/8s in theory, and more if she ever put any effort in! On the subject of revision mojos, DD lost hers totally after the half-term break. I do think she'd retained a lot of info from the mid-March (second set) mocks and having 'clocked' better revision technique but even so, I'm not convinced.

DD is so predictable she'll want to go for a chicken katsu curry in Wagamama's whether the news is good or bad. And most likely want two celebrations. Lunch with her friends and dinner with us?

Mumski45 · 18/08/2022 19:41

Oh my the nerves are getting to me today with all this talk of A level results. The next week just won't go fast enough. DS1 already thinking he may have chosen one of the wrong subjects for A level and considering changing when the results come out.

I've suggested a meal in the evening but there may be a sports event which will probably take priority! We'll see.

My DS still seems blissfully confident he'll be fine whereas I'm a real fretter, partly because my exam experience was so awful (all those decades ago). I'm really hoping he's right and I'm wrong.

Rollergirl11 · 19/08/2022 19:08

DD is heading straight to Reading festival after picking up her results on Thursday so plenty of celebrating/commiserating will be done there.

She only has one option on the table for a-levels which is her school sixth form. She will be fine for getting the required grade for her subjects so not too worried about that. However DD is becoming increasingly nervous about results day and is having anxiety dreams about them. It’s all pressure she is putting on herself to achieve her ridiculously high standards. She said the other day she will be celebrating if she gets all 8’s and 9’s. She will be content with some 7’s but she won’t be celebrating. It’s crazy! We will be happy with whatever she gets.

We got back from our holiday in Turkey the early hours of this morning. She has her induction/first shift at Waitrose tomorrow. She is equally excited and nervous but really looking forward to earning some much needed money!

Oh @legosunqueen i forgot to say ref DD’s Reading ticket, we actually created her own Ticketmaster account with her name on it so the ticket is in her name. But DD seems to think they won’t spend too much time verifying the name of the ticket upon entry and she thinks your DS will be fine with your ticketmaster account/ticket on his phone. Is the surname the same?

But I’ve actually just realised that they only accept their physical passport for ID purposes rather than a photocopy (which is all DD needed for Truck festival last month). I don’t really want DD taking her passport with her but not enough time to get a PASS ID card sorted by Thursday. Still trying to work out what to do!

legosunqueen · 19/08/2022 20:02

@Rollergirl11 thanks for this, we have created an account for him & I have transferred the ticket, was very straightforward.

Like you, I didn't want to send DS with his passport so we applied for a provisional driving license & he will take that as ID (assume that's okay...), better to lose than than the passport, particularly given the difficulty people are having getting passports at the moment. Does your DD have a provisional licence?

MyOtherProfile · 20/08/2022 06:46

She said the other day she will be celebrating if she gets all 8’s and 9’s. She will be content with some 7’s but she won’t be celebrating.

Isn't it crazy? I keep telling mine that 7 was the best you could get in our day and that's an A so I'd be very happy with any 7s. Anything else is a bonus that shouldn't even exist imho so celebrate away!

StColumbofNavron · 20/08/2022 07:21

Hello hello everyone. I’ve been without internet in Turkey for 3 weeks so just caught up now we are in a hotel in a big city.

DS1’s school email the young person at 8am with results and they go into school from 9am to collect in person. We have Sixth Form appointment at lunch to enrol which needs a parent. He said he will go with friends only to school but I am desperate to see his reaction but will obviously wait it out at home. He is confident in getting what he needs.

Having no internet has resulted in some lovely conversations with all 3 DC, particularly the older two sharing secondary tips with DS3 and it has resulted in DS2/3 agreeing to some tutoring for maths (and Spanish for DS2). They were previously very anti but will both struggle more than DS1 has.

we are about to enter year 10 too so I suppose I need a second thread :-)

Mrsbobbyaxelrod · 20/08/2022 08:55

Can I join in? Waiting here also for GCSEs…although we’ve had one result already on Thursday from CIE which was a 9 in one of DD’s A level subjects which means she has 2 of the 4 grade 8/9’s required for her A level choices (she sat one early in November) and for her offer at her new school for 6th form. Grade boundaries and marks were released for that paper yesterday which seemed to be lower than she was expecting (she had achieved quite a lot above the boundary for a 9 which I think had reassured her) she’s also off to Reading on the Friday and we’ll do something nice on Thursday for lunch I think. Her school is absolutely not open on Thursday which I think is pretty poor tbh. Fingers crossed for everyone.

PugInTheHouse · 20/08/2022 09:24

DS has hardly talked about it but he was with his friend yesterday who got his A level results Thurs. He got BCD but needed BBC however still got on his uni course so I do wonder if there will be a bit more leeway this year.

I think this has made DS start thinking about results day now, he seems OK but the fact he was discussing it means its on his mind. He only needs 5 x 4s and is predicted 7-9 although he's likely to get lower than that on Science and Spanish, Spanish in particular. He did Cambridge (I think) English Language which is 50% coursework, he got a high 8 and was trying to figure out how low he could get in his exam to still pass 😳 I think he's more worried that he's letting on.

We are going to go for coffee and cake straight after with his friend.

MyOtherProfile · 20/08/2022 10:29

Is there a thread for people going into year 10? My youngest is so I'd like to join one.

Akite · 20/08/2022 11:43

Is anyone planning on 'cash for grades'? Hard to tell how common this is, my Dd insists everyone is doing it. I wouldn't want to link an amount to specific grades but am wondering about just giving her a certain amount just as a reward for getting through it intact! She definitely didn't work as hard as she could have but has had a lot of mental health challenges to work through as well

TeenDivided · 20/08/2022 11:50

I disagree with 'cash for grades'.
I am more OK with 'cash for meeting targets', but even that isn't great.
I prefer 'reward for working hard' to be given at the end of exams, and then let the grades themselves be what they will be.

zighead · 20/08/2022 11:54

I am giving a certain amount depending on what grade DS achieves in each subject. We discussed it when he had just done his mocks @Akite No idea if any of his friends are also getting this.
I also got money per grade when I did my GCSEs.
