DD and I are close to falling out again, she has been at work all weekend and now should be revising for chemistry tomorrow morning but is instead playing a D&D campaign.
I have said that the internet is going off at 8pm because otherwise I will lose my shit.

Lightsabre · 19/06/2022 20:27

Sorry to hear about your dd @folly115. I think it's good to ring around and see what the possibilities are 'just in case'. Then you can make a quick decision on results day.

We are thoroughly exhausted with it all here. I've had to miss a family weekend away for a special occasion as it would mean two nights away and I didn't feel that would be fair on Ds being left by himself. Dh went and had a great time. I'm planning a few days away with my sisters in September as compensation!

Last week now thank goodness. So proud of our kids for getting through this year and hoping they all have a relaxing summer.

Rollergirl11 · 19/06/2022 20:39

DD has officially run out of steam now. Having said that she’s managed 3.5 hours of Chemistry revision today which is pretty decent. At least she has 3 days to revise for Physics on Thursday which is her final exam.

Now for some light relief in the form of Love Island at 9.00. We have got in to the habit of watching together once she’s finished revising.

Good luck to all DC’s for the coming week.

@Rollergirl11 I've been watching LI with DS too but on catch up #guiltypleasures

@folly115 what a worry for you. Have you talked to the school about the impact of results that don't fully meet the requirements? At DS school, although students need 4s in Maths & English to enter the sixth form, I know of students who've been allowed to enter without both of these as long as they retake in year 12, there were some year 12 students retaking Maths this time. Particularly as they know that she's been a high performer previously, there may be some flexibility.

DS has run out of steam a bit. Now revising chemistry for tomorrow so at least that’s something. 3 this week and 1 the next and he’s done. Good luck to all the DC for tomorrow

We all done after physics thank god!

MirandaWest · 19/06/2022 22:23

DD had a melt down earlier on about not having done enough chemistry revision and not knowing anything about something in Norman times (history exam) and it was all too much. I did my best to say soothing things and she seems better now.

Princessdebthe1st · 19/06/2022 22:42

Nearly there! DD is exhausted, I’m exhausted, you’re all exhausted! I knew this was a marathon not a sprint but I don’t think we were really prepared for an Iron Man!

DD has chemistry and food tech tomorrow and physics on Thursday and then it’s over. She had a day off revising on Saturday which I think was good for her but she did say that it caused her a bit of worry not to do at least some.

Surprisingly, the exam she is most worried about is food tech. The teaching for this has been at best poor and at worst pretty much absent. There were whole swathes of theory that were not covered in lockdown (which she has taught herself) and then when they returned the focus was on the non examined assessment (practical assessment). She then swapped teachers early this year when the original one went on mat leave with the new teacher being completely unable to control the class. She has done well in the NEA (provisional grade 9) but is worried about the exam. She really wants a 9 overall and absolutely has the potential to get it. As she said tonight after a bit of a wobble, if she gets this it will only be down to her not either of her teachers.

Stormchaser1502 · 20/06/2022 00:21

Urghhhhhh it’s been hideous hasn’t it!!

Final run now!! chemistry tomorrow. We went out for the afternoon yesterday which meant she came home and collapsed in tears saying she felt guilty she’d gone out and it was lost revision time!!

Today she got up and was revising at 9am!! She stopped for us to go out to dinner at 5pm. Home by 7:30 and she was revising til I gave her orders to go to bed at 10pm!! She even took key cards with different flame colours on, to dinner and we had to check her answers while we waited to be served!! 😵‍💫

Roll on Thursday!! I’ll have the fizz on ice!! 🥂

DS same. His best subject and is going in with an 8 for the assessed work but I think that’s in-focused him in some respects as he stepped back from revision since biology last Wednesday which was annoying.

3 to go

LouisCatorze · 20/06/2022 06:50

The final hurdle(s) are ahead of us and our DC. Yay! Thursday late morning can't come soon enough in our house!

DD thought biology 2 was hard (and from what she's said I don't think she did very well) so has put more effort into her chemistry revision for today (restarting physics this afternoon). She's hoping to get better grades for these two subjects. She thinks physics 1 was one of her better papers overall!

I can recall that when DS finished his GCSEs, with 10 papers in the last week (!), he was past the point of caring by the time it came to his last couple.

Good luck everyone!

DFOD · 20/06/2022 06:51

folly115 · 19/06/2022 17:25

My DD has chemistry tomorrow but she really struggles in exams and found the other papers really hard and is so exhausted now she has basically given up. The thing is she needs science to get on her health and social course so she has to get a 4. However it is the revision which really stresses her out - she spends so much time revising but when she gets into the exam she forgets it all and writes very little. If she revises she ends up getting so stressed out that she will forget it all then she doesn't sleep and ends up feeling really sick so sometimes she does better or feels she has done better without the revision.

Does anyone know how it works if you don't get the GCSE's you need for your allocated course? GCSE result day is 25 August 2022 - she needs all 4's to get on her course so if she only gets 3's and doesn't get science she can't do her planned course so we literally have a week to find a level 1 or 2 course that will accept her. School are convinced she will get 4's but she thinks she has mucked them all up and will only get 2's. She won't discuss anything to do with September.

It is a sad situation because in year 9 before the pandemic she was on for ALL 7's and 8's but since the pandemic she has had exam anxiety and since entering the exam hall for a mock exam in year 10 and having a panic attack she hasn't been able to perform in exams. In teacher assessments and classwork she would be on for 8's - with all 3's there are very few options - child care or health and beauty. Because of her anxiety she doesn't want to go to college - we went for an open day and the freedom of it all freaked her out but not many sixth forms offer level 1 or 2 courses. Up until year 9 she would have gone to sixth form to do psychology, english A level with a criminology subsidary and onto uni to study law and she was so confident about her future!

I echo @lanthanum advice for the medium term and I really hope that your DD can find some support for ways to overcome her anxiety so that she can get back to enjoying life and functioning at her full potential. I am really sorry that she is in this difficult and paralysing place emotionally today and I wish you both enough comfort and peace to see you through today.

Womblesaremyfavouritefood · 20/06/2022 06:55

Good luck all this morning. Please let it be a better Chemistry 2 than Chemistry 1 which, for us, was pretty dreadful.

Love the Iron Man description. Totally agree.

MrsScrubbingbrush · 20/06/2022 07:39

Good luck everyone. Hope it's a nice paper this morning (they deserve it!)

Also good luck to those sitting papers this afternoon. DD2 has food tech. Then just one last exam.

DD1 has Latin tomorrow and then a break before her final Physics paper.

CornishGem1975 · 20/06/2022 07:45

Good luck all, we're on the home stretch!

Chemistry and Food today and then just Physics to go!

Kaftankween · 20/06/2022 07:49

chemistry, history and physics for us this week then….done! Are we all mostly over by Thursday?

Champagne for us all Thursday night. We’ve all done our best (parents and kids) and are to be congratulated.

MirandaWest · 20/06/2022 07:51

Chemistry this morning, History tomorrow and Physics on Thursday. We can all do it!

Swimmum1206 · 20/06/2022 08:21

Chemistry today and Physics on Thursday. DS turned to the final page of his exam timetable last night and was so happy. He had a swim meet on Saturday and didn't realise how tired he was until he started his first race. Unfortunately he raced badly in all 3 races, purely due to exhaustion, so was pretty miserable most of the weekend! At least he has a good break between these last two exams. We're nearly there!!!

Unfortunately physics isn't our last, we have yet another one next Monday morning. DD was very annoyed when she saw the timetable, as 90% of her friends are finishing on Thursday like most of you, and she will just have the other MFL writing to do (that is the most long drawn out one of all, it was the one she started with - and had the travel agent issues in the oral with). Means she will feel finished and yet not finished.

legosnowqueen · 20/06/2022 08:35

Monday night next week for fizz here (History paper 4) but the end is in sight for sure...good luck today everyone! 🤞

chocolatenutcase · 20/06/2022 09:35

Chemistry and food today, music and physics left. This week is DS second busiest week with 4 exams. Fortunately it's all the subjects he likes so hopefully all will go ok. He's left physics 2 revision a bit late so if he has any energy he has his work cut out. He's having his favourite meals this week so hopefully that treat will keep him motivated. Good luck to everyone. Champagne definitely chilling for Thursday 😊🍾

lookthisway · 20/06/2022 11:35

Chemistry done, so just Physics left on Thursday. 🥳

My dd found this morning's chemistry quite hard but she's also a glass-half-empty kinda girl so this is to be expected! She can't wait for it to be over, she's very tired emotionally and physically.

IThinkIMadeItWorse · 20/06/2022 11:49

DS is home from chemistry and says it went well, he is planning to do it for A level so it's one of his stronger subjects. He now has a couple of days study leave before Physics on Thursday and Statistics and Additional Maths on Friday. Then prom Friday evening!

Think we might go out for a meal to celebrate at the weekend. So pleased the end is now in sight. Hope everyone else is hanging on in there.

Notcontent · 20/06/2022 11:55

it’s been a huge effort for them. What has struck me more than ever before is that with these exams, because there is so much material to cover and memorise, it’s as much a test if physical and mental endurance as anything else. There much be so many year 11s who don’t have the same level of support at home and who just give up, even though they have the potential to do well.

zighead · 20/06/2022 11:57

Yay, the end is in sight. Think I'm more excited about them being over than he is!
DS said chemistry paper 2 was 'good'. He has Latin, Further Maths and then finishes with physics on Thursday. He is currently doing a paper 2 physics and then he will be panicking about Latin tomorrow as he's hardly done a thing towards it.
I assume he will be doing something to celebrate on Thursday afternoon. A few of his friends don't finish until next week, feel sorry for them as it's dragged on long enough.

StColumbofNavron · 20/06/2022 12:01

DS1 said chemistry was 'fine'.

He is very introverted and likes his own company, which as an extrovert and very social person I sometimes worry about because I can't always understand that he is happy this way (he is and I really try not to inflict my ways). Anyway, what was lovely was that at the weekend he came to the charity Father's Day match and ended up playing in the game and came to the BBQ with friends we had been invited to which was so lovely. Other than eat takeaway we seem to do very little altogether.

He basically revises a few hours the night before the exam and I am leaving him to it. He worked really hard for mocks and works really hard in class.

@folly115 I think you have had some good advice, better than I would be able to offer so just to offer my support and I do agree, if school think she will probably achieve the 4s then it is a pretty likely outcome. I have a DS3 who whilst only 11 based on current levels is going to really struggle in secondary and (if things remain the same) we will possibly be looking at non-A levels and possibly working his way up the BTEC/NVQ levels. Our sixth form has a great Sports Coaching qualification with our local sports centre, but I know these things are few and far between.
