11+...anxiously awaiting results

Hope it's ok to post this here. DS had his exam Saturday, and he said today how he can't stop thinking about it, and just wants to know how he did.

We've told him, it really isn't the end of the world if he doesn't pass (and he knew that already), but this is the first time he's experienced an official exam.

So just a post to see how other's DC are doing whilst awaiting results?

We didn't get enough marks unfortunately. There are plenty of good schools around here, but I think most friends have done better so the hardest bit will be going to a school without the usual gang of friends.

LittleMissGlum · 15/10/2021 15:25

Well done @ElvenDreamer (more so well done to your DC).

@greyinganddecaying I think it's so disheartening when that happens. Not sure if this is any consolation, but DS achieved the required score but has decided not to go to the grammar school. So we will be putting our 'backup' as first choice.

Everyone else waiting, hope it goes well, the wait is the worst.

Why doesn’t he want to go to the Granmar?

greyinganddecaying · 15/10/2021 15:56

Thanks @LittleMissGlum - I'm wishing I'd not encouraged him to do the 11+ in the first place, just to save him the disappointment (I'm not a fan of selective schools, but when you live in a grammar school area you get swept along with it...).

But we've talked about the options if he didn't get a grammar school place, so hopefully that will help.

ZenNudist · 16/10/2021 10:43

Does anyone know the Trafford Grammars? Trying to decide whether to put Urmston Grammar (local, co-ed, not great facilities and you don't hear glowing reports) or St Ambrose College (fab facilities but a bus ride away. Im not too bothered that it's all boys).

DS got his results and has qualified for all the ones we wanted. Still waiting on the Catholic all boys grammar but we expect that to be a pass.

peacypops · 16/10/2021 13:44

I know a few people with children at urmston and they are really happy with it. It was second choice for our daughter but we opted for Stretford in the end due to proximity. Is it an easy journey for you? We have neighbours with boys at St ambrose. I know that they have had issues with the bus at times being delayed (I think the boys get on somewhere near chorlton). I guess it also depends if you want the Catholic schooling experience (I'm presuming you are Catholic otherwise it would be hard to get a place). One of the good things about choosing a more local school is that it does tend to make the social aspect of things a lot easier.

ZenNudist · 16/10/2021 19:50

Hello peacypops I won't @ you. We are in Urmston but probably just as near to Stretford. I know a few children at Stretford and people speak highly of it. I've not seen either Stretford or Urmston apart from the odd time I've been in their halls. The online open day for Urmston did not show the school at all. Just some heavily scripted pupils.

Stretford I hear has new facilities now but no virtual open day for incoming Y7 so we don't know what they are like.

We went round Ambrose today and ds loved it. I will have to wait for that result now. We can get in as Catholic. I've just got nagging worry that I shouldn't discount the closer schools.

peacypops · 16/10/2021 20:34

Hi Zen! We really like Stretford. It's probably average in terms of facilities but has a lovely feel to it. Big emphasis on student wellbeing rather than just academic results. They do have a new extension to the school which I haven't actually been in to but my daughter tells me is a big improvement to the building. Nice green space too. It. Must be so hard trying to make a decision when you haven't been able to see all the schools. We are really happy with Stretford but I guess it depends what you are looking for. Best of luck x

GarlandaChynoweth · 16/10/2021 21:51

@Sweetsweetsoul also waiting for Bishop's here! Been growing increasingly impatient since the girls got their results early last week!

Sweetsweetsoul · 17/10/2021 09:14

@GarlandaChynoweth it’s miserable isn’t it? My son doesn’t seem stressed about it luckily but I have an underlying tension in my tummy and I can’t wait to get rid of it! What’s your plan B if DS doesn’t pass? We don’t know yet! 😳

GarlandaChynoweth · 17/10/2021 13:05

@Sweetsweetsoul Thankfully my DS not too worried either although he would like to get through. It's just me feeling very invested in it all. Our back up is Wyvern St Edmund's, followed by Trafalgar and then St Joseph's. Our catchment is Sarum Academy but DS isn't keen and I've heard such mixed things about it. Bishop's would, I think, suit DS the best, and it's very convenient for us as it's within very easy walking or cycling distance. I just want to know either way though!

Sweetsweetsoul · 19/10/2021 14:22

@GarlandaChynoweth some of our friends have had theirs in Salisbury today but we are both at work so don’t know. Hope you’ve had good news your end. I’m on edge. 🤣

GarlandaChynoweth · 19/10/2021 14:28

@Sweetsweetsoul yes thankyou, a strong pass, I'm so pleased especially given how disrupted education has been the last few years. DS doesn't know yet. Hope you get good news.

Sweetsweetsoul · 19/10/2021 14:31

Oh congratulations @GarlandaChynoweth I already have a child at BWS and it’s a brilliant school. I’m sure your son will be very happy. 😀

Fridaonholiday · 19/10/2021 18:40

@sweetsweetsoul
@GarlandaChynoweth

We got a BWS result today - how do you know if you have passed with enough marks to get a place. Its all so confusing!!

Sweetsweetsoul · 19/10/2021 19:55

@Fridaonholiday when my older boy passed it said on the letter, well done/congrats on passing. You don’t know for sure if you get a place at the school until March though.

No post for us today!!!! Why?!?!!!

Fridaonholiday · 19/10/2021 20:22

@sweetsweetsoul
My DS passed so that was great, but I'm assuming that more than 160 will have passed and was wondering how solid his pass was. In other schools I've seen that the lowest mark to be given a place in the previous year has been provided but it doesn't seem that BWS give out that information. Its a long wait until March!

Annoying not to hear anything today - but it did say on the school website there were postal delays in some areas. Good luck!

Sweetsweetsoul · 19/10/2021 20:25

Are you in Salisbury? If so I would be confident you’ll get a place.

Sweetsweetsoul · 19/10/2021 20:36

@Fridaonholiday last post was for you, forgot to tag x

Fridaonholiday · 19/10/2021 21:41

@Sweetsweetsoul

Ah thanks, that is good to know! Best of luck to you, and hope you get your letter soon!

ElvenDreamer · 19/10/2021 22:07

Good luck all those still waiting! I reckon after all the results are in we'll have to turn this into a 'hanging on nervously until March' thread!

GarlandaChynoweth · 19/10/2021 22:12

@Sweetsweetsoul really glad you are happy with BWS. I don't know anyone whose DS currently go there or have recently left so finding it hard to judge if it's the right place for him. His primary isn't really a feeder for the grammars and he's my eldest so this is all new to me. Hope you get some good news soon.

@Fridaonholiday as I understand it (happy to be corrected) if you live within the designated area (check the BWS website) then you are pretty much guaranteed a place if your DS has passed. The remaining places then get allocated (guessing by distance and the other usual criteria) to boys from outside the designated area who have passed. We're in Salisbury about a mile from BWS in a straight line so I'm guessing we're good. Well done to your DS Smile

PeriChristmas · 19/10/2021 22:30

@thing47

Plenty of high flyers do get on to achieve amazing things from comprehensive schools.

And even from Secondary Moderns too Smile

My son passed, phew! @Fridaonholiday @GarlandaChynoweth

GarlandaChynoweth · 20/10/2021 12:46

@Sweetsweetsoul great news! Grin
