GCSE results day 2021 support thread

10 days to go until results day. Thought I'd start a new thread for parents who are getting the heebie jeebies and are probably more stressed than their DCs. I personally am trying not to mention it AT ALL, so it would be really good to have a thread where I can worry along with everyone else!

JulesJules we are in the same position, including the ADHD diagnosis. Right now, we're focusing on celebrating getting to the end of the process which has been an achievement in itself.

DD happy that she's passed everything. There are a couple of nice surprises and a couple that potentially could have been better. But overall that counts as a win!

Would like to join you in celebrating end of the process regardless of the results. There were plenty of moments at our end when we thought we wouldn't make it (or at least I did)

Hang in there Rivermonsters. I'm in my fifties, my life has been full of failed exams and then having another go at it.

Got very low grades in my a levels, failed my first exams at uni.

Got a job abroad, went back for another go and passed with distinction.

Sometimes I think we learn more from failing exams than we do from passing.

Themeparklover · 12/08/2021 10:15

sister got all 7-5 grades and has been accepted to all of her A level subjects including psychology her highest was RE and lowest physics triple

Don't be embarrassed.

You did amazing giving it a go. I'm terrified of Maths, like if someone asked me simple equation I freeze, I can count my money and that's about it, and that's only easy cos I have none. Grin

I'm sorry you didn't get the grade you wanted and my words won't make a difference to how you feel today but well done for trying, I think you're amazing for giving it another go. Will you have another go? I hope you do.

Themeparklover · 12/08/2021 10:17

sadly though like the A level grades because a lot of teachers put down inflated grades most schools will end up being audited especially those with 'all 9's as there was only 800 2 years ago now triple that with less school'...

ihearttc · 12/08/2021 10:19

DS got mostly 7’s. He was predicted an 8 in Biology and Maths so slightly disappointed but I’m so proud that he got 7’s in English. He is not that way inclined at all so he went from a 4 at the end of Y9 to a 7.
The only grade he is really annoyed about is Geography which he got a 6 in and it’s one of his A level subjects.

Hellohah · 12/08/2021 10:23

@TeenMinusTests

Sad
I have been thinking about you all morning, I think this means it didn't go as well as you hoped?
igelkott2021 · 12/08/2021 10:23

@Watapalava

Surely you can appeal a grade that was 2 below your mock? surely that's not allowed?
In my view it shouldn't be allowed - there should have been a general no detriment policy to say you couldn't do worse than mocks.
greenlynx · 12/08/2021 10:24

We are home. DD is over the moon with results. She’s got more than we’re expecting at English, expected results in others. She’s got place at college anyway but she’s just very happy and proud of herself. Now to phone calls to GPs and getting ready to dinner out this evening.

Can’t believe I’ve survived these two years….

Dunlin · 12/08/2021 10:26

Phew, much happiness all round in the phone call from dd2. Good collection of 5s, 6s and 7s, a surprise 8 in RS and the much hoped for and well deserved 9 in art.
I’m most secretly thrilled with her 5 in maths as through her entire school career she has struggled and struggled with this subject

God I can unclench all my sphincters now.

Kitfish · 12/08/2021 10:27

Incredibly relieved and proud of my DD. 9's in maths and physics - which she will be doing at A Level - so a great result. Passed on 10. Better than expected in a couple and slightly worse than hoped in a couple - but over all a great result.

Kitfish · 12/08/2021 10:28

*Passed all 10.

First well to everyone getting through this. Mocks are all sat and marked differently in different schools. Also a lot did ongoing assessment after that. What happens for a student who worked hard up to the mocks and then pretty much stopped (with no good reason such as illness)?

Rivermonsters · 12/08/2021 10:33

@beigebrownblue @AnAnonymousCheerleader thank you for your lovely replies x

NOTANUM · 12/08/2021 10:33

@gulliblestravels

Eleven grade 9s here (girl) but at a cost, imo, to her MH. We shall see.
It's a very tricky one, isn't it? You want them to achieve their best but not at all costs.

Enjoy the celebrations anyhow and well done.

beigebrownblue · 12/08/2021 10:34

Just got the call. Thank heavens what she wanted.
All 9s and a 8.

Given that we have been on the lowest of incomes this year, my mental health hasn't been at all great at times and I've had consistent sxxt from my ex husand all year at a distance, I'm relieved.

We live in an area of multiple economic deprivation so it is important to her as well as she wants to get on to a special programme going forward.

Will continue to think and pray for all here. I'm shattered, it has been such a difficult year.

HairyMaclary · 12/08/2021 10:40

Phew, 2x8, 7x7 1x6. So proud of him, School has not been easy for him so hopefully this can give him a boost for A levels. He will need to work a bit harder for those though!

doorornottodoor · 12/08/2021 10:41

Yes our results were worse than November mocks in some cases due to doing very little in lockdown for some of his subjects. Lockdown was a disaster. Not sure how I feel about it but onwards and upwards. He got what he needed for the next stage! He’s delighted as he knew he’d messed up. Hopefully a fresh start next year.

doorornottodoor · 12/08/2021 10:42

Well done to everyone’s DCs for getting through this last 18 months. Hopefully a fresh start next year.

groovejet · 12/08/2021 10:45

Can relax now, DD managed to get an A* for English Lit and A's for her English Language and R.S, these are her A level options so she is thrilled. The rest were 5's and 6's with a 4 for German which she expected.

So thrilled for her she has worked so hard and improved so much, to look back to how she struggled with English in years 7&8 to see where she is now is a credit to her determination and to the 2 fantastic teachers who restarted her love for the subject.

Keep going with the Maths! (I won't tell you how many times I sat mine! Grin)
SlightlyJaded · 12/08/2021 10:50

Well done to everyone.

Pretty much as expected here - a mix of 7s & 8s. Enough for Sixth Form and we are very proud of DD, but she is very slightly disappointed to have no 9s.

I hope this doesn't sound bitter, and I shouldn't be surprised, but I am still slightly blindsided by the clear distinction between the state and private results amongst her friends. She has a huge mix of friends with probably 60% at state like her, and 40% who she was at Primary with who went on to Private. Because she was at Primary with so many of them, she has an idea of general ability but the line is clear. Amongst her state friends, there was the odd 9 but other than that a range between 4-8 with a lot of 6s and 7s and some 8s, whereas her private friends are all posting straight 9s with the occasional 8.

We are delighted with DDs results and think they are fair, but it is clear that if nothing else, you do get between one and two grades higher for your money when you pay.

I've read this back and it does sound a bit sour lemons, but honestly not. Just finally seeing for myself the clear jump.

gulliblestravels · 12/08/2021 10:51

NOTANUM Exactly, thank you.
