GCSE results day 2021 support thread

HappySonHappyMum · 02/08/2021 16:22

10 days to go until results day. Thought I'd start a new thread for parents who are getting the heebie jeebies and are probably more stressed than their DCs. I personally am trying not to mention it AT ALL, so it would be really good to have a thread where I can worry along with everyone else!

DD is thrilled with her results. DH said to me "That's a relief". She'll be retaking Maths, and clearly should not be pursuing a career in science but she's over the moon with her English result, as am I. She's carrying her results paper at round the house with her Grin

greenlynx · 12/08/2021 10:57

What does the last column on results called Pt mean?

TeenMinusTests · 12/08/2021 10:59

@Hellohah Thanks. DD has what she needs for college, but no passes. I know just sitting some assessments at all was an achievement, and it isn't unexpected, but still disappointing.

AzPie · 12/08/2021 11:01

Devastated for DD, she was hoping to get at least her predicted grades, not even close I don't get some of her results, for example English lang/lit she has been predicted a 6/6 the whole way through, she was given 4/3. She's not long had an EHCP finalised and the level of support she should have had in place (instead of just being sat in SEND alone trying to use online educational platforms to teach herself), it just breaks my heart. I don't know what she's going to do, I just feel like I let her down, I should have fought harder for support for her so she could have reached her potential Sad

HappySonHappyMum · 12/08/2021 11:03

2 x 8s, 1 x 7, 6 x6s, 1 x 5 - over the moon here - we both burst into tears. So proud of my DD - enrolled into sixth form so onwards and upwards now. Loving all the good results everybody is posting, congratulations to everyone!

@greenlynx

We are home. DD is over the moon with results. She’s got more than we’re expecting at English, expected results in others. She’s got place at college anyway but she’s just very happy and proud of herself. Now to phone calls to GPs and getting ready to dinner out this evening.

Can’t believe I’ve survived these two years….

'Can't believe I've survived...

Yes would second that sentiment. There were many days in lockdown where I doubted I was going to...

JulesJules · 12/08/2021 11:12

@AChickenCalledDaal and @beigebrownblue absolutely. I had already got a card and a little present, she's chosen pizza for tonight and I'm just making her favourite brownies.

So proud of her. She's gone off into town with her mates so I'm having a bit of an indulgent cry while I melt the chocolate!

@AzPie are they offering resits this year? Similar situation last year and my DD reset and achieved 2 grades higher. She’d had an accident so missed a lot of school, we couldn’t appeal the lower grades, she had achieved 8s in English and ended with a a fail and a grade two lower. She resat a few months later, I had to pay an extra £50 for a new certificate with the previous grades removed.

ineedaholidaynow · 12/08/2021 11:15

DS’s results were broadly in line with his targets, so feel his school were fair with their marking

MarshaBradyo · 12/08/2021 11:16

I can’t believe the path to get here either

First lockdown was a shambles, dc found it hard to access learning.

Second far better and got grades back with live lessons

That first part I was so stressed

Well done to all of us for surviving this pandemic / exam combo

So sorry to read of your DD's disappointment. Flowers

Did she sit the foundation papers? If so, could the school have been predicting on percentages even though she's effectively capped at a 5 in a foundation paper?

The school need to explain of course but it seems badly managed to say the least.

Unescorted · 12/08/2021 11:21

Well done to all of them. Here is hoping that they return to normal for their A levels

DS did better than expected. 4x9,8,7 and 3x6. He is pleased as his A levels are the 8 and 9s.

mrsm43s · 12/08/2021 11:21

DD got 1x9, 8x8 and 2x7, and she's very happy.

I'd say her results were roughly in line with her working at /target grades throughout the course.

I think teacher assessment rather than exams meant that she was protected against mucking up through having a bad day/misreading a question etc but equally I think there are a couple of subjects that she got 8s in, that she might have pulled a 9 out of the bag if she'd had a good day!

I think they were a fair representation overall.

indy69 · 12/08/2021 11:24

1x9; 1x6; 3x8;4x7 not bad. Feeling proud and relieved

Sweetpea84 · 12/08/2021 11:27

Passed here so a huge relief all 4’s and 5’s but passes so a relief 😅

I don't know whether to appeal/ask for resit or not, it's whether DD is up to it, can't imagine it will change at stage 1 appeal as school are awful. I put in for mitigating circumstances as she was hospitalised due to MH and a death in the family (some other stuff as well) and they didn't accept any of it as mitigating circumstances.

AzPie · 12/08/2021 11:32

@NOTANUM I'm assuming it was higher paper(although must admit I thought you only had higher/lower for science & maths) as she was set 2 and like I said predicted a 6 but teacher thought she may be able to achieve a 7 on a good day but that teacher left last autumn and the new one wasn't as positive (although still predicted her a 6)

Hellohah · 12/08/2021 11:33

@TeenMinusTests... Sorry for the disappointment, but I have every crossed that this is the first day of her new adventure and it is a massive improvement on the last one. Big hugs to you both xx

TeenMinusTests · 12/08/2021 11:36

@AzPie English papers aren't tiered. Only maths, science and Mfl.

FAQs · 12/08/2021 11:40

@AzPie it’s awful isn’t it Sad they wouldn’t accept my daughters accident either, she was in hospital also in year 11 before lockdown, so no lessons at all and she couldn’t physically attend, she also missed the additional support supposed to be in place for her learning needs.

I’d say MH is more important, my daughter only pushed through because she is set on a particular career which needed the grades for Uni but it was incredibly stressful. She ended up with a mix of 5 - 7s with retakes.

This results threads don’t represent a true picture of average grades in reality so don’t feel too disheartened, maybe speak to School or colleges to see what her options are before discussing with her. Xx

Chickydoo · 12/08/2021 11:58

6x9 5x8
Immensely proud & very relieved.
DS worked very hard.

My comment:
Heavens above the above is awful Azpie.

My experience with higher ed. is likewise that some places are too strict about not accepting mitigating circumstances. But a mental health crisis and bereavement surely count.

As you may have read earlier in the thread - I have totally failed exams in the past in my life and then climbed back.

I think perhaps under these circumstances an appeal might be a good idea. Perhaps though that is a seperate support thread? I'm sure that people would have lots of experiences to share.

beigebrownblue · 12/08/2021 12:01

Daughters sixth form have a G.C.S.E support telephone line which I guess is meant for those who need emotional support and trying to decide what their options are, a bit like clearing for uni.

Wonder if local colleges near you have something similar.

Plummer88 · 12/08/2021 12:06

Super proud of m my daughter -

2 x Distinction* (PE and Drama)
7 x 9’s
1 x 6 (further maths - no teaching from school due to lockdown; just given the course material to teach themselves!)

She’s going to do A-levels - chemistry, biology and fast track maths (then further maths for year 2). Wants to study medicine at Uni so grades were crucial.

EmmaStone · 12/08/2021 12:14

Well done to all the GCSE cohort who've withstood 2 years on uncertainty, whatever they've achieved is a true achievement, they've certainly not all been in the same boat.

DD delighted with her results - 4 9s and 5 8s - largely in line with her assessments (they did 3 lots of exams), with some more weighted to the last two sets of exams (which kind of makes sense - they were peaking by then). Her 9s are all in her A Level choices too, which is excellent news.
