@orangecinnamon yes living near school/college must make a difference. Ours have to go on the bus, it leaves 8.25am they return on the 4pm bus. There aren't any other buses. So most 6th formers want to drive so they can go home. Ds1 is a May birthday...so he was stuck at school while a lot could already drive.

A friends ds took his driving test 3 years ago, then never drove again as they haven't insured him on their car. Plus he's at university too.

@Oblomov21

£33 per hour lesson here in Surrey. I'm in the wrong game! Wink
I'm paying £34 Sad
@Oblomov21 ds1's best friend and his twin brother were both bought almost new fiesta's. Another lad in his year also had a brand new one. So ds's Corsa seemed quite old. So now ds2 has it he thinks it's ancient. But it's 2013 so it's not that old. I'd have loved a car that new at 17. I had a battered vw beetle. It was 22 years old. But I really liked that car. A lot of youngsters seem so spoilt now, it probably makes a difference where we live too. To be fair the Corsa is brown. So it's not a nice looking car. But it's good enough for a learner and to see them through the first years after passing.
Ha - so true. DD1 was very good though, and actually didn't buy a car until after uni, and then bought it herself, and bought a 9 year old Fiat 500. She has had it two years now, and it's absolutely lovely, perfect for her, and she was really proud to have bought it herself.

DD2 will "borrow" it when she passes, and probably do much the same in a year or two, when she needs a car to drive to uni.

I bought a 1960's Morris when I passed my test! It was 20 years old and had only done 30k (old lady previous driver). It was forever breaking down, in the wet, and needing tyres pumped up. I also filled and fixed the rusty paintwork and polished the chrome every week. I bloody loved that car. Those were the days!

KingscoteStaff · 21/04/2021 10:09

We bought a second hand Fiat 500 (the one in the very lowest insurance bracket) and have started a trend on our road full of teenagers - there are 6 of them now and they try to park them altogether!

Comefromaway · 21/04/2021 10:42

We bought dd an Hyundai i10 (grandparents contributed). It's an ex demo model but we knew she would be driving long distances and we sold dh's car (he gave up his licence for medical reasons) to help pay for it. Since passing her test she has helped out loads by giving ds lifts so I don't have to , giving dh lifts to work and helping him care for his parents.

Ds will have to make do with something a bit cheaper.

icanbewhatiwant · 21/04/2021 10:43

Dh bought ds1 a better car. It's a 2017 fiesta. He said he will do that for them all when they've been driving 3 years. Then they'll have something decent to use for work and to start them off. Though ds1 is second year university, he has got the car with him he works full time July through to mid sept. Ds1 likes the car but still said he wanted an eco boost and not the 1.2 engine. I told him to be grateful with what he's got and that he can buy whatever he wants when he's earning. I feel he's definitely spoilt!

They're great aren't they. DH quite often borrows the Fiat to go into town, just for the fun of it, and being able to park in them most ridiculous of spaces!!
Oblomov21 · 21/04/2021 13:31

I love a good fiat 500.

The Subaru justy that Dh bought for Ds1, is a fab little first car.

Just managed to book DS a practical test in September! Am so happy as originally I couldn't get a test in any of the ten nearest centres, at all let alone at a date to suit. As he will only stat proper lessons in late May then September seems suitable.

@icanbewhatiwant I think it is a case of just logging on several times a day in order to try and get a test slot. I logged on about 5 times yesterday and then again probably about 10 times today so far, eventually a few slots came up in September. Talking to a couple of driving instructors I know, they all said the same. I guess if you work from home or flexibly like me, or don't work at all then you can do that, if you're working and not able to click refresh on a PC regularly then it may be worth using one of the apps? The one I saw though wanted you to reply to a text within 15 minutes in order for them to book it so you'd have to be available for that too.

icanbewhatiwant · 21/04/2021 17:45

@20newnames we do have a date in sept. But would like to get one earlier. Plus the test centre is over an hour away. I just downloaded the most popular app to find a test. Put in ds's details and got a message saying they can't proceed as no test booked. I tried 6 times then gave up. Technology...

icanbewhatiwant · 21/04/2021 22:13

I put the app on my phone for practical test cancellations. It wouldn't work with his theory test number, but did work with the test booking number. I've already been notified of tests. Too soon for us. But thought I'd let you all know the app works. I know a few said DC's were ready now.

Ds just text to say he was one mark off the A star in business exam. That is the exam he told me he missed out 8 questions from. He's such a fool! He knows how to wind me up and I fall for it too!

They're not supposed to be told their results, are they?
icanbewhatiwant · 22/04/2021 14:50

@BigWoollyJumpers he's just done a business exam. I was assuming a mock. Though he seemed to think it was an important exam.

Well done him! Maybe it was 8 very low scoring questions he missed off ...to give the benefit of doubt!

Oh thank goodness! Grin
EwwSprouts · 22/04/2021 17:48

Great result. May be school have said it's important for UCAS predictions?

icanbewhatiwant · 22/04/2021 19:59

Ds said today's results count towards the final grade. There are 2 exams and the rest is coursework. Both exams can be sat again next school year if they want.

My boys wind me up like that too! Sounds like you need to try to stop worrying about him, as he is doing brilliantly, but it is part of the "mum" nature.
icanbewhatiwant · 23/04/2021 09:47

@Monkey2001 ha ha yes. Ds2 has always just got on with things. Ds1 always wanted help with revision. He's at university now...so can't ask, plus it's beyond me! But ds3 now asks for help all the time. Ds2 hasn't ever asked for help. But in his words....why would he ask he's when he's much more clever than me 😑

sandybayley · 23/04/2021 10:21

Can I have a 'proud' moment? DD has been made 'President' of the school biology magazine. In my day I think that would have been known as Editor but maybe things have changed and she's got presidential powers....

Comefromaway · 23/04/2021 10:24

I'm impressed that a school has a biology magazine, let alone a president of it!

estherfrewen · 23/04/2021 11:37

DS passed theory this morning - second time lucky! Breezed through it this time and test booked for late July. Phew!

Comefromaway · 23/04/2021 11:41

Congrats!
