To be honest I never darkened their doors until I had to have 2 copies of my UG dissertation bound.
Once I’d handed them in at Uni I never wanted to clap eyes on the thing again 😂

Zandathepanda · 09/05/2021 01:06

Grin yep can relate to not wanting to see dissertations again!

FoolsAssassin · 09/05/2021 06:04

I can’t remember how my dissertation got bound, have blanked it out!

Did first virtual open day yesterday which as useful. DS very tired this week as now has entrance exam prep class and an extra coding class and is down to 2 frees a week.

Seeline · 09/05/2021 10:32

@KingscoteStaff congratulations to your DD!

My dissertation got bound in the poly library, having been typed by my Mum on her typewriter. Weeks of posting stuff back and forth for corrections 😁

DD has proper exams the week after half term - timetable, study leave etc. Those go towards UCAS predicted grades.
This is followed by higher ed week - off timetable concentrating on all things uni and UCAS. No real mention of such matters up until then. Term ends 6 July. Hard to believe it's gone so quickly!

Monkey2001 · 09/05/2021 10:38

Which open day Fools? We are planning Manchester (19th June) and Newcastle (advertised as 16th and 19th June), just hope they are available as recordings if

Monkey2001 · 09/05/2021 10:39

.... If the talks we want clash

Monkey2001 · 09/05/2021 10:40

Open days rubbish timing here as mocks are last 2 weeks of June

Seeline · 09/05/2021 11:56

I was hoping to actually visit some unis over half term, but that will now be fairly full on revision. DD has done several virtual open days, but they have all merged into one now, and you don't really get a feel for the place

Alsoplayspiccolo · 09/05/2021 13:31

Congratulations to your dad, Kingscote.

Exams after half term for DD and DS (year 10). Seems a bit surreal; I still feel like I’m waiting for this academic to properly start Shock

DD was predicted B,B,B last term, with attitude grades of good, excellent, excellent.
She’s currently eyeing Exeter for English, but would need an A, possibly 2. We’ve warned her that may be beyond her, but she won’t entertain the idea, partly because a couple of her close friends have said they want to go there too Hmm

Alsoplayspiccolo · 09/05/2021 13:32

dd, not dad - sorry, Kingscote! Grin

Monkey2001 · 09/05/2021 15:45

@Alsoplayspiccolo if your DD is at a state school keep an eye on the contextual rules. Exeter is not as generous as Bristol, but they do have a problem with being private school heavy in the tables which are published every year. Might mean they are more generous with missed grades.

@Zandathepanda I asked DS about behaviour and he said their school is fine. Engagement not great on days when they are doing it from home (Y12/13 each in 50% at his school), but apart from lateness, seems fine. I think this cohort might have the unfairst results of all in the end, the quality of education has varied so much and there is no talk of provision to make allowances for students which are affected most. So don't let your school say that it is just a consequence of Covid, they need to address the issue so your DD is not unfairly disadvantaged.

Zandathepanda · 09/05/2021 15:59

Monkey it is ‘interesting’ how it’s all going to play out isn’t it?! The school haven’t contacted me but I am confident things will be happening behind the scenes. It’s a very specific group to target.
To be honest Dd has so many obstacles with her health the teachers have been good. She is going to be as least disadvantaged as they can make it.

If you have a local uni or college they should have a printshop that is available to public...but not allowed to advertise probably.

Mine even does canvas prints!

I didn't have a dissertation at uni. I am very glad!

DS's exams/assessments mid-late June. He has started revising. All by himself.

At my school we have half baked exams where we are only allowed one slot of 2 hours max so quite a lot of what we have taught won't be formally assessed. Kids are getting study leave so can't even really sue lessons to do something else. A lot of them won't start revising til that week!!

A few online Open Days coming up which I vaguely signed up to , but lots are on weekdays which is annoying.

Piggywaspushed · 09/05/2021 16:40

Exeter has a great looking English course : it is very competitive entry.

I looked at loads of English course lately just in a bored moment and Birmingham and Exeter looked the best to me, if I had my time again. York is meant to be brilliant and I know a recent graduate but its prospectus makes the course seem a bit dry. It's all in the marketing!

Piggywaspushed · 09/05/2021 16:41

Would she consider the Cornwall campus also?

Zandathepanda · 09/05/2021 17:08

Newcastle, Nottingham and UEA looked good to me. York and Cambridge a bit stodgy.

Zandathepanda · 09/05/2021 17:09

Some in other Dds year 2019 got unconditionals for English from Birmingham.

orangecinnamon · 09/05/2021 17:11

I heard Brum was giving out CCC offers now instead of unconditionals. I can't quite make up my mind what I think about it. I can see circs where it will be good ...or bad!

I definitely don't think York is stodgy but it looks it on paper!

I think Notts is another whose marketing is a bit stodge! It's a shame really ...kids these days are used to three clicks to get the info they want ..not have to go searching for it.
