@Oblomov21 DS is not a reader, but really enjoyed the Rivers of London series. I think they are fairly light-weight compared to other titles being suggested, but might be good for a bit of relaxation!

@AnneOfCleavage I wouldn't be surprised if lots of teens eyesight has changed over lockdown - so much work on screens is not good for them.

Monkey2001 · 10/03/2021 11:37

@icanbewhatiwant you could make him a sign for his door - 1 side "please wake me up, I will be grateful to you and remember you are a wonderful mum". Other side "Do not disturb, I will be grateful that you respect my independence". His choice, decided when not in grumpy morning mode! I had to get DS1 a "Do not disturb" sign when his GF first started staying the night after I once went in to take him a cup of tea when I did not know she might be there. Different issue, but just wanted clarity and empathy both ways!

icanbewhatiwant · 10/03/2021 12:20

@Monkey2001 good idea 😂 I don't ever go in his room, I just open the door and ask if he's awake. I can't actually see in into his room. So I don't know why he gets so cross. I'm currently tidying his bedroom. No doubt he will be annoyed at that too. It hasn't been vacuumed for months.

AnneOfCleavage · 10/03/2021 12:23

I am so confused. Please can someone help ASAP before i'm timed out.
I am applying for DD provisional drivers license and have got to the part where I declare whether she is receiving enhanced payment. I tick no (what does this even mean) and it states that as she is under 17 she is only eligible for a moped provisional licence. Does this include a car for once shes 17? I don't want to pay £34 for a moped licence she will never use. Help please.

AnneOfCleavage · 10/03/2021 12:25

She is 16 years and 8 months btw. I read that you have to be 15 years and 9months to apply for provisional license but now I'm wondering if that is a typo and it's 16 year and 9 months. Can anyone clarify? Thanks.

AnneOfCleavage · 10/03/2021 12:27

Copied and pasted from the .GOV website for motoring:

Apply for your first provisional driving licence
Get your first provisional driving licence for a moped, motorbike and car from DVLA online. To apply you must:

be at least 15 years and 9 months old
be able to read a number plate from 20 metres away

Monkey2001 · 10/03/2021 12:53

@AnneOfCleavage you can drive a moped when 16, a car when 17, so I guess you can apply 3 months before you can use it. Looks like you will have to wait a month.

FoolsAssassin · 10/03/2021 12:58

The moped one is valid automatically for a car once they reach 17.

icanbewhatiwant · 10/03/2021 13:06

We definitely applied more than 3 months before ds's 17th. I thought a provisional covered car and moped. But don't take my word.

Monkey2001 · 10/03/2021 13:15

Grrr, I just filled it all in and did not want them to use passport photo. AFTER I had paid it said they would be posting something to us because they needed more info (presumably photo), I had assumed there would be an opportunity to upload. DS's birthday 3rd April, so only 4 weeks away.

Do you have to send them a physical photo?

However, at least I have realised that his passport needs to be renewed.

icanbewhatiwant · 10/03/2021 13:25

@Monkey2001 yes you fill in forms and send a photo through (booth type photo)

icanbewhatiwant · 10/03/2021 13:26

I did this during or just after first lockdown. So it all took longer. Those on here that used passport photo got them through quicker.

Monkey2001 · 10/03/2021 13:31

Thanks @icanbewhatiwant, I should have paid attention earlier!

AnneOfCleavage · 10/03/2021 13:36

Isn't it all weird then. We texted her driving instructor (to be) and he also said 15 yrs and 9mths but guess he just looked at the same website i did. when querying this he then said wait another month and then apply so that's what we'll do.
Monkey yes i saw that about using passport photo or other and will choose passport as assume it'll be quicker. Her pic is 3 years old but still looks like her essentially and she can always change it when she gets her actual license once she's passed as she'll have a new passport by then I guess - depends how quickly she passes as she's done no theory as of yet and i bet there will be a back log of applications for theory and driving tests.

Thanks for your help. I'll hold fire for a few more weeks.

Seeline · 10/03/2021 13:56

We got DDs before she was 16. WE only got it for ID purposes as she was going to a concert and had to be over 16 to go without an adult and she is very petite. I think it automatically converts to allow her to drive a car once she's 17 .

Fiddlersgreen · 10/03/2021 13:56

@Monkey2001

Yes we had to send a physical photo.
Had to take it in one of those booths in the supermarket. We did it in January as DS just turned 17 in Feb, we got it back within around 2 weeks, it was quicker than I thought

ealingwestmum · 10/03/2021 14:14

Same understanding as Seeline here. As the provisional was for festivals that coming summer, we ordered well before turning 17.

It does automatically apply to car learning once they are 17.

Piggywaspushed · 10/03/2021 16:13

shimy you can see the answer to that question on a few threads on MN currently. Arrogance would be the simplest answer.

Oblomov21 · 10/03/2021 19:59

Anne, just click yes, and apply. It'll all come good. In the wash, honestly. You don't end up with a 16 year's old moped only license, promise!

Oblomov21 · 10/03/2021 20:01

OrangeCinnamon, got a new thread title at the ready? Wink

orangecinnamon · 10/03/2021 20:25

Nooooo are we there already? Will have to something about flow testing I think....

DDs first day back today and first LFT. All ok and she came back buzzing but exhausted!

Definitely need something about tests in the new thread title

Fiddlersgreen · 10/03/2021 22:02

So I know this thread is for our yr13s but I wanted to get some opinions without starting a whole thread and you guys are always so lovely and honest Smile
My DS2 (year 10) went back to school today, he’s had 3 negative LFT in the past 10 days and I sent him off with numerous masks to last him the day...
He’s now told me that no one wore masks in his lessons at all. The teachers told them they “could if they wanted” but none of them chose to. They are sat next to each other, 2/3 to a desk.
Am I overreacting in being annoyed by this and wanting to say something to the school? I know the government have only “recommended” mask wearing in lessons but am I wrong to think the school should be encouraging it?
(For those that can wear them of course)

Fiddlersgreen · 10/03/2021 22:03

Was meant to say thread is normally for year 12s obviously!!

orangecinnamon · 10/03/2021 22:07

I'd have to send a quick email off. Teens are often asymptomatic so I'd worry ...plus the poor teachers! It is not something they should be forced to address in class it should be part of a positive culture.
