Good luck with the vaccine Piggy that's marvellous news.

We also have parents evening coming up in March. really looking forward to it. Wondering also what exams might look like for our lot next year? does anyone know if the consultation has been completed yet?

EventuallyDeleted · 26/02/2021 11:58

Glad to hear of others getting their vaccines. Frustratingly DH (diabetic) still hasn't had his, they are on age 55+ for those with conditions in our area this week and he's under 55. DS may be able to get it from the Learning Disabilities register eligibility announced on Weds, I've got to take him to the GP next week so will ask then.

TheySeeHerRowling · 26/02/2021 12:04

Yay for vaccinations!

Dd just went into school for her Covid test - she has come back with mascara all over her cheeks as she made herself gag so badly! I think perhaps she went a little above and beyond what was necessary - at least, I hope so!

piggywaspushed · 26/02/2021 12:05

Apparently, Ofqual will now start thinking about years 10 and 12. I think a lot of their thinking will be informed by how well this mass return to schol does go. They seem to think bunging a few summer sessions at children will solve everything! I am not convinced year 12s will get any of that funding anyway.

I thinkw e all have to cross everythign and hope this opneing up of society , in combination with vaccines, doesn't go tits up, for want of a better phrase.

It does feel like exams can never be the same again... a lot of people at the top of education are very messianically/ideologically pro 100% terminal exam so there is a resistance to reform/change/discussion in education as well as political circles.

My year 12 are OK, really good in fact. Almost advantaged by some elements of remote learning. Year 10 is a car crash.

Fiddlersgreen · 26/02/2021 12:06

I’m confused as to why they won’t get the vaccine as I thought Pfizer was approved for over 16 and I’m sure I read a while ago that the vaccine programme was for 16+ but then everything I’ve seen today suggests over 18.

If they are not being offered it this time around, will they be offered as they turn 18 as for some that is only September when this is likely to still be around I’m guessing?

Zandathepanda · 26/02/2021 12:08

Hopefully they will give the vaccine to 16-17 year olds after the 18s. It would make school easier for Yr 12 upwards. We saw several of this age group at the hospital Dd got hers.

There’s testing going on with younger ones now so it may roll out to younger children.

I was working in school when swine flu hit some of the Year 11s really badly and it mucked up their exams. Last year if you had covid at exam time you still got your grades. It will be really unfair for our year to not get graded in an exam it they are ill with covid after all this.

Zandathepanda · 26/02/2021 12:09

Sorry it took ages to write my thread and it’s moved on 😂

icanbewhatiwant · 26/02/2021 12:10

We haven't heard from school yet. They usually seem to wait till last minute to let us know stuff.

Dh had the Pfizer vaccine. He had a really sore arm the rest of the day and a headache. His arm is still a bit sore 3 days later.

Zandathepanda · 26/02/2021 12:11

Dd (young 16) got Pfizer.

AnneOfCleavage · 26/02/2021 12:38

Pfizer can be given to 16+ but not the Oxford one apparently. My DD also volunteers as a Covid Marshall and was told she couldn't get one as under 18. Her friend who is 17 and volunteers at a hospital had the Pfizer one. Seems GPs and hospitals give Pfizer, in our area at least, and the hubs give the Oxford/AZ one.

I guess we just wait to see what Ofqual say re next year. I can see this winter being hard hit too as that's when it's more prevalent it seems and they'll have to vaccinate all the early vaccinated again.

Zandathepanda · 26/02/2021 12:51

Yes all the 16 and 17 year olds were directed to specific hospitals that could guarantee Pfizer availability. There’s also the need for it to be kept at -70

Zandathepanda · 26/02/2021 12:55

I also think with Year 12 it depends on the subject. One subject has been a nightmare to do remotely whilst the others have been fine.

Shimy · 26/02/2021 13:29

I'm so grateful that it's not ds1 caught up in the pandemic. Ds2 has soldiered on but the cracks are starting to show. He is even more determined to sit his exams next yr as he feels his 'moment' was taken away last year. He doesn't want to be referred to as the cohort who got 'predicteds' as opposed to those who went through the hard gruel. I've told him it doesn't matter, that teachers aren't just plucking grades from the sky, they have been very carefully decided based on all his work and Gav could decide either way so be prepared. Does anyone else's dc feel like this?

KingscoteStaff · 26/02/2021 13:32

Anyone's DC thinking about Leeds or Reading?

icanbewhatiwant · 26/02/2021 13:37

After I wrote on here that I haven't heard from school I had an email. They are calling 6th form in next week for covid tests. We have time slots. So now they can start full time lessons on 8th. I think ds3 and other years will be going back staggered the following week. I'm glad 6th form will go back on 8th.

Zandathepanda · 26/02/2021 13:51

Theory Test 4 in 1 kit was the app everyone used round here. It was very good.

Older Dd ‘did’ Leeds in Year 11. Tip: if sharing the drop offs/pick ups with other parents make sure you volunteer for dropping off. Especially if you are precious about the inside of your car. Or have a keen sense of smell.

Dd would be extremely happy to have no exams. She getting good marks so the only way is down!

KingscoteStaff · 26/02/2021 13:55

DD was meant to do Reading last year, so her group of friends quite fancy Leeds this summer.

piggywaspushed · 26/02/2021 14:19

I'd be very wary of their ts and cs about giving money back in any timely fashion if they have to call it off...

piggywaspushed · 26/02/2021 15:52

Grrr

DS' school is starting LFTs next week (I personal don't see the point) . It si a very big schol so their plans take ages so n F2F until 15th. meh. It is what it is.

But here is the grrr.

Every time he does the test he needs to come home. Two of the tests are after 8 March. They are between 9 and 3. I'll be at work (obviously...). How is he supposed to get there and back?? No buses... I think they have not thought this through...

20newnames · 26/02/2021 16:47

DS has first test on Friday 5th appointment to be made next week (no buses though!) then yr11 and yr12 back full time from Monday 8th. Other years staggered starts throughout the week.

He has just bought tickets for Reading with friends so fingers crossed for him that it goes ahead.

Seeline · 26/02/2021 17:16

DD has her first test on Thursday so fingers crossed she'll be back in school on Monday!!

PaddingtonPaddington · 26/02/2021 18:38

DD back on wed 10th and first test that morning. DS in year 10 is back Tuesday as year 11 are priority for Monday. Sounds like other schools have been proactive in getting testing sorted next week ready to start on the 8th. DD cannot wait!

Monkey2001 · 26/02/2021 18:46

@AnneOfCleavage I didn't feel anything yesterday,. Today arm slightly aching when I raise it to shoulder height. Think I have got off lightly!

Monkey2001 · 26/02/2021 18:48

@Piggywaspushed DS's school doing all except first at home. Can you ask for home kits as he can't get in?

piggywaspushed · 26/02/2021 19:19

Apparently not as they have to do the first three at school so they are supervised. I suppose that is supposed to teach them how to do it. Am hoping, given my job, that is open to some private negotiation. I have emailed them, hopefully not sounding too stroppy!
